    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

New to turtles

Hi there I've become interested in turtles and have other reptiles, but never a turtle/tortoise. Some species that have caught my attention are the diamondback terrapin (not sure which sub-species I like best), Mata Mata, and Softshell turtles (again not sure on subspecies). What I'm looking for is a turtle that is for a novice to intermediate keeper, that is active, colorful, interesting looking, doesn't need a huge cage ( big is do able), and preferably is not aggressive. I have three main questions. 1) What size tank would I be looking at for them? 2) What decor/ items I should include in the cage
3) Is there any special care requirements for any of them? Thanks for your help and if it seems like an impulse post it's not entirely, but it is late at night. Thanks for any help

Matt, the first thing you need to do is figure out what species you want to keep. The ones you mentioned have very different care requirements. After you have come up with a "short list", start researching the needs of each, starting from the top. That info is easy to find on the web. When you arrive at the one you want, and the care is going to be doable for you, there you go.
