In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

No good deed....

Flashback to millions of years ago when the earth was still..... ok lets not go back that far. Roughly 2 weeks will actually do.

We noticed a Pit Bull running loose in our alley. Didnt really think much about it, a loose dog roaming the alley is a pretty common sight around here. 99% of the time the owners of such loose dogs are usually not far behind. Well for three straight days we noticed this dog running loose in the alley. Kinda hard not to notice when my Jack Russell goes nuts barking at the Pit Bull every time it gets near our fence line.

Saturday July 4th here was a very raining day. The fireworks celebration in downtown Indy was postponed until July 5th because the weather was so bad. The morning of July 4th was wet out the gate and I noticed my dog going nuts in the backyard. Right across the fence by my garage is a blue tarp covering some miscellaneous items. The Pit Bull had bedded down there trying to avoid the elements.

My daughter got to feeling sorry for the Pit Bull and took it out a bowl of food. She mentioned it had a collar on so I decided to go see if it had any tags. As soon as I walk up on this Pit Bull it looks up at me and...... hands me its paw to shake. That is just not fair. So needless to say I get to looking the dog over and it is cold, wet, hungry, a little on the thin side with a couple of obvious signs of being on the loose for a few days. It also looked like she had recently weaned some puppies. Yeah of course I took it in.

So we spent much of Sunday walking and driving the neighborhood trying to find an owner with no luck. Didnt think much about it being a holiday weekend. Monday we do the same thing, as well as throw up a couple of fliers in the gas station and convenient store right in front of our neighborhood. Nothing. So I take it the local vet about two miles away and have them see if there is a micro-chip in the dog. No luck.

The vet was nice enough to put up a flier as well and gave the dog a quick look over. The vet said the dog was in general good health as much as he could tell from a quick once over, but he said the Pit Bull had a pretty bad bacterial infection in her ears. He gave me a homemade solution for rinsing the ears to get the dog by until I found the owner.

Over the next several days we keep walking her all through the neighborhood and hoping for a phone call from a worried owner. To this day that call has never came. This Pit Bull is the biggest baby in the entire world. Very well trained, affectionate and LOVES kids. Truly one of the sweetest animals I have been around in my life. And I am no stranger to big powerful breeds having owned Great Danes and Rottweilers much of my life.

Well it has been almost two weeks now and I refuse to call animal control. They will put the dog down almost immediately just because of the breed she is. I refuse to let that happen to such a gentle animal. The Pit Bull (Kayla is what we are calling her now) has adapted well to our home and has been the perfect house guest. So my daughter and I decided we are going to go ahead and adopt her as we are losing hope that this Pit Bull was not just dumped or abandoned.

So yesterday I take her to the vet to get a proper physical and to get her ears properly treated as well as get her shots since we dont know the dogs history. The vet remembered me and the Pit Bull from the week before and immediately commented on how much better her coat looked and how much weight she had put on in just a weeks time.

Well as it turns out they cant give the Pit Bull her shots nor give her the antibiotics to treat her ears. I ask the vet why not and he said that the steroids in the antibiotics could kill the puppies. And I reminded him that she is a stray and dont have puppies. He said, "not for about two more weeks she dont."

Yeah thats right, she didnt just get done nursing a litter, she is about to have a litter. I was left speechless thinking what the hell have I got myself into now. So now we are preparing for puppies.

As the old saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.

Sammy the big softy.

Your story sounds similar to one of my own except Buddy the beagle didn't have a littler but seizures. Properly medicated and he had been seizure free shortly after his arrival here. Enjoy your new addition, punishments and all.

Thanks David. Nice to know there are a handful of other big softies out there. :)

Soooooooooooooooooooo Dave, you wouldnt be interested in a Pit Bull Mix or possibly a pure bred Pit Bull puppy here in about 8 weeks would ya? Cheap. Real cheap. AKA FREE.

Cant blame a guy for trying....

I'd help you out if I could brother but as it is the balance here is delicate. The 4 found cats (2 on the freeway median wall, 2 different times) Buddy and another rescued pup named Rosie reside in one area and Abigail (Akita that just doesn't like other animals - can't ya just relate?) lives in another part of the house. I just don't have any room. I keep my ears open for you though.

You sure you dont want to see pics before you make a decision? Maybe even hold one? Take one or two for a weekend visit to Uncle Dave's house even....

LOL.... I gotta have some fun with this.

Oh Sammmmyyyyy!!!! *BIG HUGS*

It kinda sounds cruddy now, to know you got puppies coming.. But it will be such a good experience for the family!!! Yes a lot of work.. but come on..

While I'm sure Abigail would enjoy a new chew toy, I'd still have to decline your most generous offer.

I am sorry but you have brought this all upon yourself being such a softy and when they are all gone (ya wanna bet at least one stays) you'll miss them and be there another chance to help out a pup in need good old Sammy will come through again. So......:nopity:

Nice story Sammy. At least the puppies will be easier to give away. Hopefully anyway. Good luck.

Sammy,

You are a helluva guy for taking in the dog and not just calling animal control. I am sure you'll be able to find good homes for the puppies and in the end you will end up with a devoted pet and that is as good as gold. Great story!

Jamie

(ya wanna bet at least one stays)

So you did read the part about me having a 14 year old daughter.

Yeah that was decided about 2 seconds after I told my daughter the Pit Bull was pregnant. The first words out of her mouth immediately after "ARE YOU SERIOUS" was "DO I GET TO PICK OUT THE ONE WE KEEP".

Thanks Kevin and Jamie!

Oh Sammy!!! haha! That is such Sweet/great/awesome news!

Thanks Miss B!!

Yeah I cant say that I am exactly bummed out by the whole thing. Just still trying to wrap my mind around it all. I am still at a complete loss though on why this absolutely wonderful animal is a stray. But the vet said that in the last 6-12 months that pet abandonment (economy related) is happening in near epidemic proportions across the entire country.

Yep, lots of work ahead. Guess I know what I am doing the rest of the Summer. Spending a lot of time at home. But that just means I will have more time to come on here and give you a hard time. :reddevil:

So, what have you named the puddle maker?

Man, good deeds surely do get people in pickles don't they lol.

I wish I lived closer I'd take one of the pups off your hands to lessen the difficulty. Good luck with them when they arrive, and Kayla.

Huge Kudos to you Sammy! That's such a sweet story (very similar thing happened to me taking in a stray, I now have 3 cats lol). Pits can be such great dogs, mine was the sweetest girl, her name was Kyla, very similar name! Good luck with the puppies and finding them homes. You may want to contact a local pit rescue for help finding good screened homes (www.badrap.org and http://www.pbrc.net/ has lots of link and info). Good luck with your ever expanding family! :)

Update....

No puppies yet, but we have got some massive udders going on. And I mean UDDERS!! If a milk cow was standing here she would say, "damn, that dog has got some big ass udders".

Sammy, you just make my heart smile. :D And the vision of a pit cross with udders...........well, doesn't THAT just make me want to poke out my minds' eye.

Good luck with the pups. They (and their mom) are sure lucky to have found you. :yesnod:

I reckon you should post puppy pics as soon as you have them: there are a lot of other softies on Fauna! And obviously they've got a good chance of being bright: their mother was smart enough to shake a paw the moment she saw you (Great image!).

Aw...

Yeah, her shaking your hand was the part that tugged at my heart strings too... poor thing! Still a good, well-trained dog, no matter the horrible experiences she's had. I would LOVE to have one of the pups... but you are way too far away dangit! :( Would have been timely too, because we are looking to buy our first home and my dog (a fixed, 4 yr old, loveable pit cross) cannot stand to be alone, we need to get him a buddy shortly after we acquire our home. Too bad you aren't closer to Oregon!

I love the story though, felt like I could have been living it because if I had been in your shoes, it would have happened the same way. Your daughter especially reminds me of myself when I was younger! Good luck with the new addition and the pups, I want to see photos!! I love puppies...

Here's me and my guy from a few months ago...
