In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hello, I am a student in college right now and I have been thinking about purchasing a leo for quite some time now. I know all the basics, but I was wondering how much I should expect to spend on live food? I would REALLY like your opinion. For one leo, do you think I should buy the 50 count or 100 count can of mealworms? How long do the mealworms last in the fridge? How long would 50 mealworms last for 1 gecko? Thanks!

What do you mean when you say "the 50 count or 100 count can of mealworms"?

If you're talking about the freeze dried or pre-killed mealworms, I would suggest finding a different food source.

You want something that you can feed prior to feeding the food item to your gecko. Gutloading is very important. I really like the fact that you are asking questions BEFORE buying your gecko !
Keep up the research and you will be better prepared when you get the gecko which will be good for you and your new pet! :)

At a typical pet store 50 meals can cost $1-$3. My mealworms last for about a month before they start to get too moist in the fridge. 50 mealworms would last an adult leopard gecko about 2weeks I think. You can also try getting 1doz crickets which will last a week and cost about $1 or like 10cents a piece. You can keep the crickets in a small "kritter" container available at any petco petsupermarket, walmart etc. Also crickets must be fed during their housing so feed them some oats or other whole grains and veggies(mustard greens, carrots, spinach etc.). You can feed the gecko about 3-4 crickets every other day or so. IF they are uneaten feed less. With mealworms I recommed a small bowl that can be made of a solo cup. Cut it 1in high and put about 10 mealworms in there at a time until they start to get low.

P.S. always feed live!! live mealworms will last 1month in the fridge.

Depending on the age of the gecko I would feed them the crickets a bit differently. if they are babies, feed appropriate size crickets every day and give them as many as the will eat. My hatchlings take 10-12 small crickets daily starting after their first sheds. Juveniles I would feed daily as well. Adults get fed every other day. You may have some difficulty getting the babies to eat mealworms. I find that they just dont move enough to entice the babies to eat. :)

Little Monster

Yeah my leo is a little monster. Hes get so into it its wonderful. Mine eats like 5-10 a day I think. Sometimes he will just walk away from them and go and sleep. Its so hard to count exactly. Crickets are a pain but my leo doesnt seem to like mealie :>off_to<: Does anyone know how I could get my leo to eat mealies more they are alot more convienent :>off_to<: Good luck getting your new addition.

First off, thank you very much for those who responded to my post, it helped me greatly. I had no idea they ate so much! I won't be able to breed mealworms in my room, so how much do you guys think I will have to spend on food alone? Geeze it is really disappointing to hear I have to buy so much mealworms...

cboozer, It is possible and a lot cheaper to order mealies over the internet. There are several places you can get 1000 for $10-$15 shipped. A lot cheaper then buying at the petstore. Make sure you check the BOI on the company you buy from though.

Freak, I got mine to eat by grabbing a mealie by one end so that it wiggled around. I held it in front of my gecko and they nailed it, and me too a couple of times but I still have all my didgets so it's all good. :eatsmiley Now they know mealies are good food. :spectator

Contianers of 500-600 for 8 bucks that will last a couple weeks I'm sure.

To get your Leos to eat the mealies try adding a small slice of carrot in the dish. The mealies will move all around and twist and turn while eating it and this really gets the Leos' attention!
