In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hi All,

I am looking at buying my first snake and I want to get a ball python. I have been doing some research / talking to folks at a couple different reptile stores. I am getting varying opinions on housing / lighting / and heating best practices.

I am currently leaning towards a 40gal breeder tank / UTH (nighttime) / basking bulb (daytime)

What are your thoughts on the best cage / heating / lighting for a ball python?

Thanks,

Edge

While tanks can be made to work, they're not a great choice for snake housing...especially if the snake happens to be a ball python. It is difficult to maintain proper conditions (temperature and humidity) in a tank; and they don't offer much privacy/security for a ball python. (Moved to ball python discussion forum)

Edited to add:
Ball pythons are nocturnal; bright, hot lights are not "normal" for them.
If you want to use overhead heating and a tank, I would recommend an infra red bulb OR a ceramic heat emitter (either option should have done form of controller to prevent overheating).

A plastic tub, such as a sterlite or iris container, it holds heat and humidity well, easy to clean

uth of some kind on a thermostat, consistent safe temperatures.

no lightning is need for ball pythons
