well...my female laid just one egg today...and not in the hide...when i found it..a mealworm had worked itself halfway inside the egg...so..the egg is dead..she still has that other one...now she's digging in the hide so hopefully there still a chance for one of the eggs...when i found the first one i candled it right away..there was a reddish circle on the top and a few veins..so im guessing it was fertile..so...im hoping

i really thought i took all the mealworms out...seeoms like i missed one...~sigh~

from my experience every single egg i have ever gad laid outside the lay box has been a dud........ while i have only had a few females do this it has been my experience.. now im not saying every egg laid in the nest box are fertile either LOL because i have had female lay infertiles inside the nest box as well.

Robin, i wouldnt be surprised if it wasnt fertile..i did see a faint circle..but i have seen this in infertile eggs also..
i've only had one female lay fertile eggs on her first clutch..but those eggs died 5 weeks into incubation...sucks huh?
maybe i'll have better luck this time...now that i have an actual incubator and all..lol

and also she may only lay one egg... unless of course you see the other one in there... shoot if she lays another dud put the male back in with her for a bit

Robin, I've had six egg's layed out side of the box so far this season and only two were bad.....soooooooo??????

theres another

She definatly has another one in there, its clearly visable when she's turned upside down..
if the next one is a dud my male will go back in with her..hopefully i'll be able to hatch some this season..

I tend to agree wtih you Robin, I've had many duds this year, and come to think of it, all duds were laid outside the nesting box.

The conditions were great. Maybe the females have a way of knowing whether the eggs are fertile...? Possible lay the infertile ones in the poop area or outside the box...? Hm, thats kinda interesting.
