    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hello Leo Community =)

I was wondering if I could elicit the opinions of some (or all) of the memembers here on two matters:

The first two (2) pictures are those of a leopard gecko that was sent to me, supposedly being a HYBINO (Bell strain). Can the members here please tell me if this IS or IS NOT a Hybino and if you can list some compelling characterics that would back up your answer that would greatly be apreciated.


The next two (2) pictures are of another Hybino leopard gecko i received. The first thing I noticed was the eye problem. Can I please get opinions on this eye problem as to wether or not, this could happen overnight during shipping. Again if you could please back up your answer that would greatly be appreciated.

The first photo is NOT an albino of any kind... looks to be perhaps a het? The eyes are dark... a Bell's eyes are a pinkish color.

The second photo shows a gecko in serious need of help getting that residual shed off it's eyes. Try using a wet Q-tip to moisten the dead skin, then very gently remove it with your fingers. If that doesn't work, try using a little mineral oil (no fragrance) to get the skin soft enough to detatch.
 
Have to agree with Marcia... Ray Charles could see that it's not an albino. The retained shed looks pretty persistent from the photos (nice closeups BTW). The mineral oil or an opthalmic ointment should do the trick, hopefully the eyes themselves are OK. I wouldn't feel too good about receiving those animals in that condition.
 
I agree with them. The first animal is a nice Super-Hypo Tangerine at best, perhaps a het? If it was sold as a hybino, I'd be interested in getting my money back.

I actually have just received a Bell Hybino today. The differences are clear between a Hybino and a Not. The tail is a crisp white color. Any spots/bands are light tan or brown. There is no melanism whatsoever in these animals. No dark black spots or bands period. This is because Albinism reduces the amount of melanism in the animal.

The second looks more promising to be a Hybino, but honestly, of what strain is anyone's guess. I haven't been able to tell any blatant differences between the strains personally.

I agree that the shed skin MUST come off as soon as possible. Otherwise the skin can damage it's eye beyond repair. I personally would request a refund. If they (the company/person) were to try to deceive me; whether it be because they are uneducated or they were trying to scam me, I'd request all of my money back. Especially if one animal arrived with stuck shed in the eye.

Felicia, I will have to hold off on the name of this individual at this point. My initial thoughts when i first saw these geckos runs pretty much on the same line as what has been stated. I emailed this person with my concerns, and was told that the first leo posted was INDEED a HYBINO and that the eye problem was NON EXISTENT when the gecko was shipped out that night. I understand that sometimes it is hard to believe a buyer when you (the seller) believe a situation is different from what is described by the buyer. This is the reason I posted this to get views from other hobbyists/ enthusiasts/ breeders so that this seller can hopefully see that maybe his stance on this matter is wrong and will hopefully do the right thing.

Again thank you for taking the time to post your opinions and advice for the eye problem. I have emailed the seller and will give him a few days to respond. I will keep everyone posted.

Did you send him the photos? He can't deny the condition and/or animals you received with such blatant proof.
 
I understand. If you plan on naming this person/business. Please take it to the BOI, and let us know about it.

Just a coment on the second one. I have had leos, come to me and have a shed during shippment. I'd be willing to guess if there is no infection in the eye, that he/she may have shed in transit and there was not enough moisture to aid in the shed. However if it is infected and there are layers upon layers of old shed there, I would be shouting at the top of my lungs!

PS. Were you able to get the shed of the eye? If so how does the eye look now? Poor little thing.
 
Vanessa - yes, i initially emailed description and photos of the problem to the seller before I opted to come here and ask for opinions on the supposed Hybino, and advice on the eye problem. It wasn't until the seller insisted on the fact that it was Hybino that I decided to ask for opinions here.

Felicia - Following Dan's advice, I have kept the leo with a humid hide box to see if she/he can get the shed off on his/her own. I will check later on this evening after work to see if the shed has been removed. If not I will follow the advice of Marcia and Dan here and use some sort of an applicator (q-tip) with non cented mineral oil to try to assist in the removal. I will keep everyone posted on this matter.

FYI.... The seller has respond to my email and is willing to compensate for this mishap. :) Again thank you for everyone's assistance and guidance in this matter.
 
Like what has already been said, the first animal is not an albino. The second one looks to be a Bell. Keep us posted on the eye problem. Those are most likely animals I produced. If you do not want to post who you got them from, you can pm me and I can at least confirm that the geckos came from me originally.
 
That is DEFINITELY not a hybino. That eye problem is very very unlikely to have developed overnight in shipping. I would ask for a refund or large percentage of cost in refund. Chris.
 
I agree that the first isn't a hybino. But, the eye problem may not be anything other than a retained shed. If they're just starting to shed, and they're put in a dry deli cup and shipped, they can run into problems. If this is the case, the eye should be fine once you remove the skin. If the eye is infected / or doesn't go right back to normal, this would indicate that the skin has been on there for awhile.

When I have a leo that retains shed on the eyes, I moisten the area for awhile with a q-tip or piece of kleenex, then a tease free a corner, grab the free edge with a small pair of forceps (the kind in pocket knives work great), and slowly pull it off. Thoroughly moistening the area and pulling slowly will increase your chances of getting it all off in one piece.

I'll add my 2 cents. no way is that first one a hybino. I know I would be a bit upset make that alot upset if I got a gecko with its eye shut like that.
 
Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give a quick update on the eye problem. It seems with the advice of everyone here, the eye shed has been sucessfully removed. The eye looks fine to me, but as a precaution I will keep an eye (no pun intended :) ) on it for the next few days.

Glad to hear the shed came off for you and that you got the morph mix up cleared up without any problems!
 
Glad to hear everything turned out okay, I would be furious as well if I recieved geckos in that condition...
