With no perfect solution, I am agreeing with those who feel that the Chris Johnson situation would have been lessened if you had given him more of an opportunity to show himself. Those that knew of his confrontational nature did not connect the dots that way then, and most newcomers to a site are going to look at references such as the GGC, Good and Bad Guy threads, trader rating etc, and never take the time to research his personality. The Chris Johnson episode, for all the suffering it caused many, did emphasize the value of the oldest rule in the book, which is "buyer beware". In hindsight, warning signs were there, heeded by some, and given too much the benefit of the doubt by others. The community is wiser now.
I like the suggestion by Ron "Norsmis" of a 3-point "I just don't want you here" warning. Maybe a better version would be the ability to suspend someone for 48 hours if they are getting to out-of-line in the view of the moderator, with a harsher penalty waiting if they don't tone it down upon return. Hope that's not a programming nightmare. You have lamented before that the site does not attract the more credentialed people in the business, or they post rarely. From those that I have spoken with, the reason is always the same, in that its "too petty", or often that discussions are hijacked by people who deal poorly with disagreement, ie resorting to personal attacks. I have a nemesis in this very thread who could be a poster child for this syndrome !! On the flip side, getting the best possible people as moderators, and giving them more authority to keep pettiness and flame wars out of their forums (as you suggested) might be the best foundation on which to rebuild.
In the end, certain folks need to be muzzled, if not banned soon enough, from open participation forums. To be able to post here is a privilege, not a right. Once abused ........ see ya !

Rich, I think being able to permanently assign a "BANNED" label to every post certain entities ever made in Fauna would serve as a Fauna merit badge properly self-awarded to Fauna. All that came here and noticed it would be far more likely to derive a positive sense of the site, IMO, especially if you just added an additional "Banned for Rules Violations", or "Banned for Excessive Profanity", or "Banned for Moderator Abuse", etc. to the label. Perhaps another programming nightmare, but how about including a link under their name to the exact post that broke the camel's back? Some entities may certainly attempt to trumpet their "I told off the Fauna crowd and got banned" in other sites, but should any readers there wander here, let them see the exact "chest-beating" and maturity that did the trick ! You want your merit badge ? Here it is !! Maybe a righteous bit of "be careful what you wish for ?

for my benefit, and that of others who also are not looking in the right place, could you put in a link or paste, as I am missing something about the rules. Here are the current infractions as I see them listed in the BOI rules, which apply to the entire site. Maybe there are new rules elsewhere, and I am just not looking in the right place. Thanks.
The warning points are as follows:

Actual or implied threats to another member - 6 points.

Antagonism Towards Moderators - 6 points.

Profanity - 4 points.

Racist / Prejudicial Remarks - 6 points.

Posting BOI topics in other forums - 1 point

Failure to post FULL NAME in BOI - 1 point

Failure to provide SUBJECT name in topic line - 1 point
