Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

PC died......

Can you believe this crap???

My drive C died. Getting an error on the raid array status page on bootup. I got that when I started up first thing in the morning on Friday, but shutting down power and restarting made it go away. No dice now. I knew it was a real bad sign, but I was hoping a miracle would happen.

I can't believe what an absolute POS this Velocity Micro computer has turned out to be. I do believe I am going to be looking for a new computer over the next several days. I just can't see me ever trusting that frickin' thing ever again now. Even sending it back to the factory, with the holidays here, I'm betting it will be tied up in transit for a good three weeks. Quite frankly, although I know they won't do it, I would rather just get my money back and they could keep the darn thing. Just give me back the few add-ons I installed and be done with it.

Sheesh, wouldn't this have just been LOVELY had I been doing my taxes and then had the darn thing crap out on me on April 13th when I'm getting ready to print out the forms to file my return.

Seriously, I am having fantasies of taping a target to the side of the POS, hauling it down to my shooting range, and taking video of my punching holes through it with one of my 50 caliber rifles. Would probably be dumb to do, but hot damn it would feel good while I was shooting up this turkey. Plus it would probably be a real hit on YouTube as well.

Ah hell, I'm going to bed. I'll be fine in the morning until I remember what I have to be pissed about.............

 Dang, Lucky, that's not good.

Didn't you have that drive replaced or upgraded not long ago?

I'm wondering if the amount of heat the PC was putting out with the old cooler could have damaged that drive, and maybe others. Heat is hard on hard drives. I'm also wondering if all the shipping back & forth could be a factor. You know how packages get dropped and that's not good on hard drives, either.

At this point, to me, to keep repairing that thing, left & right, as much as you've had to here lately, it's almost like :deadhorse

Personally, I'd be apt to try to persuade them to replace the whole dang thing or give me money back. I wouldn't want to use the same case, hard drives, or anything from that infectious 50-caliber target. However, I think you said you put in a blueray dvd drive, which would be about the only thing I'd feel comfortable to be pretty safe to use in another system. Make 'em transfer your data to another system.

But after all you've been through with them, I'd be real leery of any/all of their machines, even though they do have good ratings. Something's definitely not right with that setup/system. You shouldn't be having that much trouble, especially after replacing so many parts.

I hate those late night fiascos. :willy_nil

I'll be more than glad to try help find reviews of any new system you consider buying. I can even give you a link to a computer forum or two I used to participate in where I know & trust a lot of the people that are still there. They're more up on the latest, greatest than I am since I've been out of the loop almost 2 years.

Hang in there, Lucky!

Well, I've been using the new computer for a couple of hours now without a problem. I'm hoping I've got the problem fixed..

Now this is going to just knock you over, as it did me....

I was actually on my old computer checking out what is available with the intent on buying a new system and just sending the new one back to Velocity Micro with a letter basically saying "thanks, but NO thanks, please send me my money back and scrap this turkey...". So I'm checking around on prices and options and realize I may not be up to snuff on the latest graphic boards or processors. So I start checking out some forums to see what is hot and what is not. One of the threads caught my eye where a member was having problems with intermittent system failures, blue screen of death and whatnot. So I started reading the thread. Someone just posted something to the effect "if you have a Creative SoundBlaster in your system, yank it out, delete all the drivers, and that will cure your problems..." Eh? Just so happens I installed a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium Fata1ity a couple of days ago in this new system. And it also happens that I have gotten several blue screens of death with the notice of a fatal error (Windows was DEAD at that point) with some error codes that I tracked down to indicating a problem with Creative drivers. Now the day before yesterday sometime I had gone to Creative's website and downloaded and installed the latest drivers there for my soundcard. Coincidence?

Well, I went in and pulled OUT that sound card and deleted the drivers. Like I said earlier, I've now had this system running for a couple of hours without ANY issues, so I'm thinking MAYBE that was causing the RAID setup to go haywire somehow. Beats me how that could be, and maybe it's just another coincidence that the system has been running OK now (I don't trust Murphy's Law under ANY circumstances!)... But sheesh, who would have ever GUESSED that a sound card could do something like this? That it could botch up the boot level routines that set up the RAID configuration for the hard drives?

Beats the hell out of me, but I know for a fact that this caused me a LOT more hair loss and certainly some damaged brain cells to boot. Last night I was packing up an order to take to the airport today (yeah, one of those EMERGENCY snake orders.... ) and I am extremely proud of the fact that even feeling as stressed out as I was (I cut open my head by hitting it on the corner of a work table after chasing a bunch of Silver Queens all around that did NOT want to get into that deli cup, at 2:30 am) that I did not KILL one of those little SOBs... But I was close, REAL close...

Anyway, I've got everything that can be crossed, crossed right now. Wish me luck, please. I need all the help I can get to retain what remnants remain of my sanity right now.

yikes. why even go with them if they are giving you so much trouble?
you apparently know how to work on computers already, if you just buy the parts you want from a site like newegg.com, you could have a top of the line pc for much cheaper then to buy one from any of those ripoff sites.

What's the latest word on Vista these days? Has it become useable yet?

vista has ALWAYS been usable. i've been using it for gaming, 3d modeling, and graphics editing since it came out and have yet to have a single problem with it. its much more stable then xp, its faster then xp, and its much nicer graphically.

most of the people who DO have problems are ones who expect vista to run just as fast as xp does on hardware thats not made for vista. common sense should tell people that since vista requires far more resources then xp, it will of course it will run slower then xp on hardware that was made for xp. just like xp ran slower then 98 on hardware for 98, etc, etc. thats why when you upgrade the os you have to upgrade the pc hardware as well.

and the ram has nothing to do with it being vista.
you just need a 64bit os to get more then 4gb of ram. be it vista or xp.

My wife is an IT Tech/Web Master at our local community college and they installed it on some of their units. She says it is garbage and had to replace the computer she installed it on in her office. She says everything was just too slow.
perfect example right there. if they upgraded the PC hardware instead of tossing vista on the xp machines and expecting it to work, they wouldn't have had any trouble at all.

many of the companies like dell, etc are another prime example. they will toss vista on a pc with 4 year old hardware that only has a p4 and 1gb of ram then people get it and moan that vista sucks because its slower then xp. same can be said with most of the people who do benchmarks. it shouldn't take a genius to see that a pc with 1gb of ram will run xp better then vista. just like a pc with 64mb of ram can run 98 better then xp. its not vista's fault, its the fault of the user for not upgrading there pc.

I never would have thought about the sound card.

Here is another one for ya...

I built a computer for a friend and she called me here a while back and it had died... it would NOT boot up. So I tell her to bring me the tower and monitor (cause I have spare keyboards and mice) and I will look at it. I open up the case and check all the connections....everything LOOKS good so I attempt to boot it up so I can see if maybe there is some error message.

I come back to the computer after a few mins (had something else I needed to do) and Im looking at the desktop.... well.... that was easy. I call her up at work and say.... hey you have a window with messinger and one other program popping up when you boot your computer dont ya.... she was like yeah.... and I ask... ok how do I know this. Then it clicked.... She realized I had her computer working.

Next day I take it back to her house... hook it up.... AND IT WONT BOOT!!!! So much for being easy. She was like.... I thought you had it working. Well it was at my house... so now Im troubleshooting again.

I hook the power directly to the wall... maybe the surge protector isnt letting enough thru to power the power supply.... No joy... it wont boot.

I disconnect the cable modem.... no joy.... it wont boot

I disconnect the printer....no joy... it wont boot

I disconnect the speakers (now Im grasping)... no joy.... it wont boot.

So now all I have connected is the keyboard and mouse... same as at my house... WTH. I mean Im baffeled at this point... and was ready to take it back to the house and start switching out parts... then something caught my eye.

I ask her... do you still have your old PS2 mouse (she was using a newer USB Optical mouse)... and she said yes.... I was like... get it for me... cause that is the only thing that is different from when I had it at my house... and it was working at my house... I had used a PS2 mouse.

I disconnect the USB mouse and hook up the PS2 mouse... and whaabam..... it boots. Im sure I had a dumb look on my face... I really didnt think that could be it... but I was trying to set it up EXACTLY like it was at my house.

After I got it up and running... I hooked her digital camera into the same USB port to see if the port was bad.... camera worked like it was supposed to.... so the port was good.

Who would have thought that a USB optical Mouse could keep a computer from booting.

what happens when you boot up the pc and then plug in the optical mouse?
was this mouse used with the pc prior to the pc problems? or is it a new mouse?

if the mouse was used with the pc before the problem started, then it's possible that the pc has a faulty power supply which can't supply enough power at start up to power the usb ports along with the rest of the motherboard. only easy way to test this would be to get a different power supply, put it in, and try and boot it with the mouse attached. if it still doesn't work, then you just have a spare power supply. if it DOES work, then you know the power supply was to blame.

if the problem only started when getting the mouse and/or if the pc crashes or shuts off when attaching the mouse, it could mean a faulty mouse. for example, maybe it's shorting the motherboard due to bad electrical connections in the mouse itself. or it could just not be compatible with the motherboard. like if the mouse is for usb 2.0 only and the motherboard only has usb 1.0

you could also test with a different optical mouse plugged into the port that the origional was on. if it works and boots fine, then you know its the mouse itself. either not compatible or broken.

The PC was working with the mouse originally then it quit..... and she bought another USB Optical mouse and plugged it into the same port... it was a mouse that went bad.

Speaking of weird darn problems. A while back I started having my system acting really strange. I would be working on something and suddenly the screen would start jumping and flashing. Happened intermittently, but I had no idea what was causing it. I thought a virus had snuck in, so I ran a virus check (even though I have one checking everything incoming and outgoing), but nothing. This went on for about a week or more and I'm beginning to get pretty frazzled about it. Bad video card? :shrug01: So when it happened again, I just sat back and LOOKED at what was going on. It appeared that the open window was quickly alternating between being full sized and a reduced window. Hmm, now what the heck would cause that? I believe there is a keystroke that will do it, but darn if I could remember which one, but the thought that maybe my keyboard was going haywire might be the culprit. So I started looking around for another keyboard to try. Ah, there's one. Oh, that's the wireless one I USED to have on this system, under all those books.... Uh... Duh... I never took off the USB dongle, and apparently the keyboard was still active. Yes, Windows WILL recognize not only multiple keyboards, but multiple mice as well.

Anyway, what apparently happened is that I must have been moving some stuff around, and laid some boxes on top of that wireless keyboard. They weren't heavy enough to fully depress the keys, and must have been just heavy enough to intermittently trigger whatever keystroke it is that tells windows to change from reduced window size to full size and back again.

Man, talk about almost being driven insane!

Anyway, so far so good with my newer computer. Still running OK after about 5 hours or so after removing the sound card. Now if Newegg will only let me return that sucker. I ordered it on the 19th of November, tried to do their automated RMA form on their site, but it got kicked out saying it was more then 30 days so no refund allowed. Thing is, I haven't HAD it for 30 days. I only installed it recently when my computer got back from the shop again. I sent them an email explaining the situation so we'll see what happens. Guess I need to check to see if my onboard speaker ports all work, or else maybe consider getting an older sound card with more mature drivers.

Oh yeah, if this turns out to be the problem, I've got a whole lot of crow to eat because of all the nasty grams I sent out late last night to Velocity Micro..... :dunce:

Remember what I said about Murphy's Law?

Right after posting the above message, I went and printed out an Excel sheet so I could do an inventory or my remaining animals, and right after that, this error message pops up:

RAID Access Failure
Access failure; Critical error on
disk WDC WD1500ADFD-00NLR0 (port: SATA 0.1)

Dammit.......... :hot: Where's my 50 caliber........

Oh yeah, I'm on my old computer again right now.......... :censored::censored:

LOL sheesh rich.... That just sucks.

Sounds kinda like me.... Weird crap, or things that just shouldnt happen always happens to me and my computers * not lately... but lets not jinx it...*

Another reason why, when i decide to upgrade my PC... Im going with A few extra HD's than i really need. and RAID.....

I was thinking about all this while doing inventory. I'm going to just reseat all cables to see if maybe something shook loose in the box since it has been shipped back and forth to me so many times. Seems kind of odd that it ran so long today after I removed the sound card. Kind of makes me think maybe I moved a cable during the process that might be loose.......

Hey, what do I have to lose at this point? :shrug01:

Rich,
I suggest reseating the cables & the RAM, too. Also check your cables for bad spots, kinks, etc, and make sure they're not touching anything that gets hot like a heat sink, or anything that could cause crosstalk, like a fan or another cable.

Reseating cables & RAM are the most viable of that group of suggestions. The rest, well......, doesn't hurt to look at while you're there.

Have you ran your RAID software's diagnostics?

A few other possibilities are to check your Power Options in the control panel and make sure your hard drives are set to always stay on and not set for any kind of sleep mode.

You can also try disabling NCQ if it's on.

There are several other options, things you can try, before you run WD's diagnostics on the drive. Check out this discussion: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t27459.html

Best wishes!

I've reseated the cables and memory. Nothing really looked out of whack. I found that NCQ setting and it was enabled, so I disabled it. There were three options in Device Manager I had to do that for.

I'll reboot this and see if it stays running for me.

Thanks for the tips.

Well, let's see if I can get Murphy's attention...

Ahem..... So far since I reseated the cables and made some settings changes, my system has been running without a hitch.......

Ok Murphy, do your thing now.......... :toiletcla

Ok Murphy, do your thing now.......... :toiletcla
Ha! Ha! Now, you know that he usually waits until your confidence gets built up a lil' before he does his thing.

That's why I finally decided to move from FL to my current location (Murphy, NC) 15 yrs ago. Can't beat 'em, join 'em.

With 10,000 RPM drives in RAID 0 you shouldn't notice much, if any, speed loss by having disabled NCQ. If it stays up & runnin' and you feel froggy, you can always enable it again and see what happens.

Hopefully you've got it licked now.

Hang in there, Lucky!
