Picture reference or credit given

Is it ok to post somebody else's picture/information if credit is given, or should a link be used if available from the source? I used a link for when I posted on another thread @ http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=323024 post # 4. Just asking cause I've seen people get knocked for stealing pictures wether for profit or not.

(The following is my opinion, and may not be legally correct)
In a way, it depends on what you are doing with the pictures...
Generally, unless it falls under Fair Use, you should have permission from the owner of the image to use it. With that permission, you can include a statement that identifies the owner & indicates that you are using it with permission; If it is Fair Use, you may not actually know who owns the image...if you do, I would include that information; if not, post the link.

Thanks for your responses. I just don't want to end up on the wrong end of licensing/ownership issue and want to give credit when due.
