You only need to inbreed by one generation to prove the trait, and that's offspring to parent who are only 50% related anyway. It's actually worse to cross offspring x offspring from the same parents than it is to cross offspring back to a single parent because offspring are 100% related to one another but only 50% related to one of their parents. Once the gene is confirmed, then you outcross as much as you want.
Inbreeding isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be so long as you do it responsibly and keep track of how related all your animals are. It's how we maintain breed standards to a degree in virtually every domesticated species.
