In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

My snake, the one i got yesterday, IS feeding on live mice, but I know that it is highly recommended that they go on prekilled and Id rather not kill it myself, plus my mom doesnt approve of frozen mice in any of the three freezers in my house. I know that there are a couple of humane ways to kill rats/mice, like breaking their necks, etc :bawling: , but I want to know about using a co2 tank. Where can you find co2 and how do you make a box? Can you simply use a rubbermaid and some piece of dry ie, wet it and stick the rodent in there with the lid closed? or should i make it so that no air can escape whatsoever... I just dont really want to do anything too gory in terms of kiling my own mice.... :dgrin:

There are several ways of doing this. Check our site in the caresheets section for an article on how to get a kill-tank going. It uses CO2 from high pressure bottles such as the one readily available in paint-ball shops.

If you want to stick with dry ice - simply get a cooler (preferably one like Igloo or Rubbermaid - not the cheap styrofoam ones - you can pretty much use any container that is somewhat airtight) and fashion a wire cage out of a scrap piece of wire mesh. This is simply to put over the piece of dry ice so the rodents don't come into contact with it.

Put your piece of dry ice into the cooler and put your wire cage over and close the lid. Don't need to add water or anything, the dry ice will give off enough CO2 on it's own. Let it sit for about 5 - 10 minutes. Get your rodents ready by grabbing them by the tail and quickly open the cooler, drop them in and close the lid again.

Let them sit for a little while and they'll be done in a few minutes. Depending on how many you drop, how big your cooler is, how fresh the dry ice is, etc etc...it can take from a few minutes to up to 15 minutes. This procedure is painless to the rodents.

If you open the lid and see that they are all motionless. Close it back up and keep them in there for a few more minutes just to ensure they've not just passed out.

CO2 is heavier than air so popping the lid won't make you loose too much of the gas in there but keep the lid closed as much as possible anyhow.

Good luck.

when u go to the pet shop u can just ask them to kill the mouse for u.i work at a pet shop and we dont mind killing the mouse for the customer.they will do it and ur snake will be happy.

Mr Mansell,
Wow, that's a lot neater and easier than the way I have been doing it. Thanks so much for the post :)

Will that work on a 40qt or bigger cooler? I'd guess that I'd probably have to get a bigger tank tho.

wusses...

that way is wasting time. just snap the ****er's neck and BAM---one mouse a la feeding time. you peeps need to throw away your conscience and all of this humane bull. the mouse is gonna get dead anyways, so why waste time???:crazy03:

Shouldn't you be eating glue or licking up paint chips or something right about now?

It will work, it will just take a little more time than a smaller cooler.

Smaller cooler/more rats or mice/fresher dry ice = shorter time
Larger cooler/less (or smaller) rats or mice/older dry ice = longer time

Here is the link for the CO2 tank:

Thanks again to Cheryl.

Stevens idea for a cooler is an excellent idea~ one little tip though~ make sure the cooler is not in fact air tight. The CO2 coming off the dry ice has mass~ (I'm not a scientist~ I can't explain how~ but it does) if the cooler is air tight and no air can escape the container~ the container will explode.

This would be unpleasant for you~ the rodents~ and your Mom!
Good luck!

it most likely would be.... ill make sure to leave a slight opening when i do it which should be on tuesday if i get the dry ice by then

Here's the way I do it, not very sophisticated but it works. I use two 5 gallon buckets. Place the mice and/or rats you want killed in one bucket. Place the second bucket inside the bucket w/the mice. They die pretty quickly (around 5 minutes) and the more mice you do at once the faster they die. It's bloodless and hardly any feces on the animals because they die pretty quickly.

I'm afraid I don't follow either. Is the one you put inside the mouse/rat bucket smaller so it fits in..?..

I think she is talking about suffocation. There is a space between the two 5 gallons buckets (putting one inside the other) and with the rodents in the bottom of the first the second would make a seal (if you have ever tried to pull one bucket out of another you'll know they seem to cause a vacuum) and they would suffocate. Not a way I'd want to go.

I see what she is doing. She uses the second bucket to push down on the critters in the first bucket. She puts her feeders in the first and second one slides in and it forces the air out of their lungs. Same as constriction. The more feeders you have in the bucket the better because they push against each other . Some people stack 10 or 20 pound weights in the second bucket.
It would be pretty simple to use a pvc cut-off valve attatched about 2 inches below the lip of the cooler to provide a way for the air to escape. as far as the mass thing goes , CO2 is heavier than air. As it turns to gas the vapor is thicker/heavier so it falls to the bottom and as it fills the container it pushes the lighter air out. Hence the need to have a valve or crack the lid.
