Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Bad Guy problems with TOM CRUTCHFIELD

In reading the dialogue it seems something's missing. Patty went from being cordial and telling you to send Tom a pm to being irate. What happened there? Are there any messages missing?

have any of you ever met patty or spoken to her yourself? It does not take much at all to set her off. if she even catches wind of anybody talking about her or tom let alone tom and his smuggling she goes ballistic I mean absolutely insane yelling and screaming and cursing. if she sees this thread you will see what I mean.

This is really terrible. It might be worth flying out here and collecting your money in person....

TOM CRUTCHFIELD is a thief!

There’s a man, his name is Tom Crutchfield. Great herpetologist! Which is true because he’s achieved a lot. At present he keeps trading snakes, although he can’t work with them himself. He’s just unable to make it much further than his computer because of his health, so his partner Patty does all the paperwork. In December 2012 I ordered reptiles from USA to Russia, the order consisted mostly of very usual stuff and lots of epicrates. After lengthy negotiations I came to Florida myself to give him upfront money, 3000$ to be precise, and explain him all the bureaucratic demands of importing snakes to Russia. It went well, I had no reason to disbelieve him. I gave him a contract where the part of the total amount of money, 3240$, was stipulated, so in compliance with this contract he must send me the reptiles in the course of month after I paid him. I needed the contract to get a permission to import those snakes to my country. There was a list of reptiles: c.chrysogaster, c.fordi, trachemys albino, ball pythons and others, every reptile costed about 30$. We didn’t put real prices on the list because if there was some sort of unplanned delay Tom would have to pay a big fine, so I just didn’t want to bother my supplier. But the contract was important for the customs and I needed it. We arranged that he’d send me all before summer comes. Tom said he’d do everything without trouble and he’d be able to deliver me more reptiles later this year. Then I transferred him all the money according to the contract and made several remittances more, 13000$ altogether for the animals and 1000$ for the frights. All spring I was reminding him of myself, I was asking him to keep me informed but he always forgot to answer. All his replies to my long e-mails were short and he kept saying that he had put all my reptiles together and was dealing with paperwork. In summer – yes, in summer! – I asked him about what was taking so long with my order and his answer was very simple – he didn’t make the order and didn’t have all the snakes! What a discrepancy with what he said before, hah! Then our conflict started and I tried to explain him that his lies were really bad thing. In every e-mail I was asking the following: When will I get my snakes? When will you start dealing with the paperwork? Now his answers were long and romantic, Tom told me about his great experience and about himself, being all this big and omnipotent, about how many orders he’d sent successfully… I asked Tom to call Bob Clark, I’ve been working with Bob for several years from now and he’s very experienced in sending snakes to Russia, he even came to see me here personally and knows everything. But Tom said me that he couldn’t speak with Bob on the phone! He couldn’t get through for several days! I asked Bob to check his phone for missed calls but there weren’t any!
Then Tom felt offended because of two silly questions of mine (about the date of the snakes delivery and completion of the paperwork) and told that I didn’t appreciate all his creative writing and banned me. He took my money and banned me! He took the money and just disappeared – what would you call it? It’s a stealing! It’s funny actually. I couldn’t believe my eyes and I tried to resolve the conflict without Tom. I didn’t want scandals. I wrote Patty, his partner. It was September 2013. She’s way wiser than him so she finally gave papers for CITES and the work began. At the turn of the month everything was still in process. In November I asked my money back, I lost my clients and it didn’t make any sense to proceed it. Tom is not professional, he was very childish about complying with the contract and I was surprised. Patty agreed to give me my money back and asked for the bill. When she got it she realized the amount of money and… changed her mind! She said she’d keep doing the paperwork but it wasn’t that simple! Here comes the most important information. «You ordered way too specific species to export! And now you’re asking for impossible!» - Perfect! When they took the order it wasn’t impossible at all. Weird. Patty got offended too, she wrote me again about Tom being very pissed at me and asked not to bother them. It was late November, New Year’s coming, Patty stopped answering. I don’t have the money. I don’t have reptiles. Tom disappeared. I had no idea that I shouldn’t have made prepayment, it was my mistake, I had been warned about his criminal past and about him bancoing other people. I should have listened to them all. You can’t trust people like him, he sees the money – 14000$ and he steals it. I never thought that it was such a big sum of money for an American. But it’s big for me. I borrowed part of the money from my mom, the other part from my job and that smartass just took it. Be careful, don’t trust anybody! I liked USA though, I was there again not so long ago, but this time I was visiting Tom’s friend who I had met in Florida. He was speechless about all this mess and he tried to make Tom become more sensible but Tom said him the same. I beg you to post this message in your page because it’s very important for people to know the truth! He’s a very popular herpetologist and many people trust him. He uses their trust against them. In the USA he delivers reptiles without any troubles. I understand that people don’t care about the name. The just want to get reptiles and to get them cheaper and closer. But I hope you’ll support me. Professional reptile keepers are afraid of disrupting a relation with him but you can express your sympathy sending me messages. Those who live way too far from America he cons and there’s nothing we can do about it. He’s a very bad example of American herpetologist and I’m very surprised. Before only African exporters were that knavish. There is only one word Tom and his friends can use, high education! They always use "asshole", very professional. I would never know this part of his personality, if Tom had no problems with papers, i would get animals and was one of you, who was happy in buisness with Tom, most successful transactions taking place in the U.S., and it is clear there are fewer problems.. But now i know, if he make mistake (document problems, animals die) he always start to be agressive and disappears. Its not good way of buisness. For example, i work much with Bob Clark, if something happen- he refund the money, i can believe him and trust! Be careful here with Tom, your transaction will be successfully only if all goes smoothly it in any unusual situations you get a sea of mud and obscene words in your direction, do not return the money, too. permission for the import of animals in Russia was over, I can not get the animals lost customers. I understand, it happens sometimes made long documents, but not so long as it is now. Yes and terms were agreed, Tom knew them, Tom knew what types will be dealt with. I paid him for the result, it is not, there are some words about the difficulty, I asked him to return the money, but he also does not wish to send his friends say that he continues to make the documents and I still have to wait a month or a year! but it was late, very late, so things are not done. I have all the evidence, I am ready to answer any additional questions, there are pictures of correspondences with him, there are plenty of witnesses! anything, all you desire. Thank you for reading!

Based on my one purchase from him years ago, I will never do business with him again.

I made a single purchase with him in 2008. The frog (P. Bicolor) came in almost dead. I sent him an email and pictures within 10 minutes of getting the animal. He basically said "Your loss" in so many words. The frog died that same day. After arguing with him for days afterwards I received a full refund with a note saying "Don't ever do business with me again".

So, I ordered an animal that was came in basically as a DOA...ask for a replacement of a refund....get yelled at and then finally get booted by him as a customer because I wanted him to be a stand up guy.

Over the years since then I've detoured at least 100 or more people from purchasing from him. My guess is that I've kept close to $20K out of his pocket....

Last time moderator deleted all evidence, cause of bad words in screenshots! Okey, but why did you delete all topic?

That is a lie.

Your full thread is right here with your screenshots. We didn't delete your posts.

You are to use this thread.
Don't start another thread on the same topic.

I would be careful about accusing people of doing things they didn't do. This thread has been here the whole time and nobody deleted it.

in response to sobekserpents, come and collect in person: that seems like a good idea, but probably not going to work. if they don't have the money it is a wasted trip. and if I am not mistaken guns were involved in a conflict between tom and his best friend. somebody ended up dead.

Is this in the news somewhere?

You are not mistaken. Bad idea to try to collect in person.

Easier said then done. I know because I've been there years ago with Kim Felts and never saw a cent. Besides a lawsuit, what do you do, hold a gun to their head?:shootfoot

How about going home with $15K worth of albino iguanas? Maybe he doesn't have the funds anymore, but he has other animals...

Earlier this year, I had contacted Tom on the off chance he might have an Amazon Basin giant yellow foot tortoise, as he has had them off and on before. He sent me photos of a large, but not extremely large, non-giant yellow foot tortoise (I have had several ABYFs, seen quite a few more, and have dealt with countless regular YFs). I shared some photos of actual ABYFs and explained that it was not one. I might have shown him pics of my huge non-giant animal, too, but I forget. The next day, he posted it on Kingsnake for $700 as a legitimate giant ABYF and it was presumably sold for that amount to a person who has no background with these or likes risks. I decided it was best not to bother with him for anything after that and I had approached with a sense of managed expectations already.

so someone thinks if you just show up at another persons facility with a sheriff, you take what you want? the police were there for the previous gun battle. how many police know the value of an albino iguana? no offense, but I don't know anyone dumb enuff to attempt that. especially to come from Russia..... total waste of time and $$$$$$. give this some thought....

The theft was committed on U.S. soil. The buyer, even though he would be coming from Russia, could hire a FL attorney to look into it and get a court proceedings going without having to come over here. $14K is grand theft if the buyer can prove it. If it were me, I would sue for everything it cost me to battle it as well. Once court proceedings were over, he could fly over here, get an escort and go collect his settlement....because there is without a doubt that Tom would settle rather than fight this.

In this case, he could settle with giving the buyer the owed animals OR possible animals of equal value that would be easy to sell, such as albino iguanas...etc in addition to having to pay the court and attorney's fees. Tom has a legit business going, therefore his wages/income could be garnished. If he has a bank account even better. Tom has more animals there than he can sell (he pilfers...and pilfers...etc). Maybe out of spite and stupidity he would attempt to fight it, though he honestly (if the above statements are correct) doesn't have a leg to stand on. The judge would rule in favor of the buyer.

So, yes...you could just show up and collect your animals after you went through the judicial red tape so-to-speak, and yes you'd have to have an escort.

The problem here is, you'd have to really want to nail him. You'd have to pay for the attorney up front. Judging by Tom's past, as long as you can prove the theft you would win your case quickly which would help save some money. There IS something that can be done here. This guy is not left high and dry, he just has to want to proceed to the next step, which is getting a U.S. attorney...

Give that some thought....

I really don't want this to get personal, how much is a round trip ticket from Russia? it will take several. attorneys are not cheap. guilty defendants get continuances, and drag things out to cost the plaintiff. you assume a judge will, in one hearing find for the plaintiff. my expensive attorney tells me that only the judge and god know how a judge will rule, and usually god isn't sure. costs would way exceed the outcome. do you really think tom is going to garnish his own wages?

How is this personal? It's not even about me or you....

You do however seem to have the thought process that this guy is helpless, which he's not.

Of course Tom wouldn't garnish his own wages, the state does that. The state can also put a lien on cars, houses...etc. The buyers wouldn't have to fly out out here at all, unless he wanted to. I have 3 attorneys in my family who all have taken cases from out of state people who never saw the court room during their cases. If the buyer has the contract, emails and whatever else proving that Tom intentionally misled the buyer and eventually stole his $14,000 it could very well just be an open and shut case for most judges. The judges I know don't like to spend a lot of time on stuff like this, simply because there's no need to.

Keep in mind that Tom would have to pay an attorney to drag it on if he chose to as well. It's not free for him to fight it, just as it's not free for the buyer to pursue it. That would cost him as much or more than what he owed the buyer. He just might be dumb enough to do that, but a normal person would just settle at the earliest possible given chance to settle.

If he were given a court order to appear, and the case of the buyer proved he stole $14K (literally proved), Tom would have the choice to pay for an attorney and defend himself or just settle after it was all said and done. Again, I am assuming Tom would do what any normal person would do in this situation, which is just settle and save yourself some money, but Tom is Tom....and going by his history I doubt he'd do anything close to the smart thing. So, assume he'll fight it. At least you'd get the satisfaction of not just laying there and letting him take your money. Cost him as much as you can, and in the end if your case is solid you will win. It's a battle, and one side has to win.....and I doubt Tom has a case against the buyer in this situation.

As long as you send everything the attorney needs, the attorney would show up to court for you and fight the battle. Once it's done, if you chose to come over and go pick out your animals, or whatever the judge allows you to do, then so be it. You might even be able to get a 3rd party to collect and ship your animals as well.

Where's the line drawn? Are we to assume this guy is broke and unwilling to pursue it? I'm at least giving the guy some options here (valid options he can actually use)....
