    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Recently I was poking around the feed store here that i get my rat food from and found bug bombs that used Permethrin as the main ingredient. Always looking for something usefull and preferably affordable I wrote the name down just in case ( god forbid ) I ever needed to bomb the whole snake building ( moving up in the world but thats another thread ) .

For those who want to know and can safely bag the entire collection if needed its Bengal Bug Bombs . Letting a can or 2 fog the room sounds better than spraying all day and 3 cans is only $10 - 15.

This doesn't sound bad but I would remind people that the fog is then on everything in the room. The inert ingredients can leave a geasy film so you might want to keep this in mind.
 
I dont believe anyone could justify or condone the use of
bug bombs around any herp collection.It would be like swatting a fly with a 44 Magnum.

Proper handleing of new arrivals is the trick to avoiding mite issues to begin with.

If you can not find concentrated permethrin in your area check out ebay.i just looked and they have smaller bottles of 10% permethrin for 20 bucks.and also they have 1 gallon jugs of 38% permethrin for 129.95.i have no idea how you would dilute the gallon but it would last a lifetime.
 
As previously stated this was discussed about a couple of years ago in another thread. The brand name is "Equate" and can be purchased in the Pharmacy section of WalMart. It comes as a spray and has exactly the same concentration of the active ingredient as in PM but at a fraction of the price. It's sold to combat lice in bedding, clothing, etc.

One other thing to make note of. Keep in mind I was a COMPLETE skeptic until I tried this for a few months.

Back in the summer I received a female Argentine from a Fauna breeder that was LOADED with mites. I took her out of the bag and literally had the buggers crawling all over my arms! Grrrr..... This was despite asking if the animal had mites before I bought her.

I saw advertised on Kingsnake a hanging pest strip. I can't remember the name of it right now but it comes in a white vented piece of plastic and it emits a slight chemical (no odor) that kills all flying and crawling animals. I hung two of these in my main room as well as my quarantine room. I also placed a very small piece under the paper in this Argentines cage and within 24 hours she had not mites of any kind. They were all dead AND I have seen no signs of any health related issues etc, either from her or my main snake room. I even have one in the baby room with no ill effects!

So, as a preventative, I keep these on hand at all times just in case one of those little buggers make it through the quarantine period. I am no longer a skeptic!

We use the Pest Stripes when needed as well.
They can be easily found/purchased in many WalMarts far cheaper then what those scam dealers want on KS,eBay etc.The water source must be removed when useing this product inside a cage.Water will absorbe the lethal stuff and it has been confirmed to kill neonates/yearlings that consume the tainted water.I was first advised to put it in a plastic film can with several holes punched in it.Regardless of what you put it in,keep the animal from direct contact.
One piece (1"X2") will fog out a 4' cage in mere hrs.Remove the stuff after 2 weeks because it will have killed exsisting bugs and their eggs(10-11 day reproduction cycle)That PAM and Reptile Relief is bunk :censored: and Ill never support its use in any way,shape or form :angry: Its doesnt WORK without excessive investments of "more product",one pest strip will out gun 4 cans of the other crap" Its Been PROVEN" :dgrin:
More is not better when useing this stuff a little does alot!

The bug bomb has the same active ingrediant as P.A.M. and as long as the animals and water bowls are removed , the room properly vented before putting the annimals back , its no more harmful than spraying anything else.

There are chemicals in the mix that are used to soften ectoskeletons of many insects in order to deliever the active properties.Call any DVM or Pest Control Company and they can drop a few dozen $100 words on ya that will explain the same thing.

No Pest Strip

You need to be careful with the no-pest strips. The first problem is deciding how large a piece to use. Too large and you'll harm your animals and not enough won't kill the mites. Actually they can build up an immunity to vapona if exposed to it for long enough without being killed.

I am not saying don't use them but do some research first.

I know that Greg Holland has used them for years with no ill effects. I would recommend NOT putting them into your cages unless it's an extreme case like I had. Even then the strip was pulled within a short period of time. I simply have them hung from the floor beams. One on each side of the room and it has worked great! Not even a single spider dares enter into that room!

Same here Bob. I've been using them for years and never have a single issue with insects and/or mites (it helps that is as close a collection as possible). There are two strips in the reptile room, which is detached from the house, 10 feet apart from each other. It does take care of any insect that dares enter the premises. They are replaced in accordance with their expiration date.

It's an insulated garage of approximately 18' long, by 10' wide by 7' high. The package that contains each strip comes with recommendations as to how many strips to include depending on the size of the room (calculated in cubic feet). What's very reassuring is that they even mention "reptile houses" among the suggested uses. We buy them locally in Runnings Farm and Fleet.

My snake room is approximately 12 x 25 with 9 foot ceilings and 2 strips does the job for me. I don't remember how much coverage they give but it goes by cubic feet vs square feet.

Up til recently I have been using

PVM for the past few years. This thread has been very enlightening and I want to thank all of you for the helpful and economic remedies.

By simply placeing a 1"X2" piece on the vented top of either a 4' or 6' Neo assures desired results.
The use of products like Frontline* and assorted bug foggers is extreme overkill IMO and should never be supported.
Consumer clues are clearly marked on product labels right?
Use gloves
Well ventalated area
Do not breath,eye contact etc,etc,etc !!!!

WHY Subject an animal intrusted to you as a keeper for its survival and with in your human abilty to "reason"expect it to tollerate such abuse ?

Might as well soak'em in gas and dry them with a torch :angry:

Not the same? Any of the above mentioned products are designed to accomplish the same exact thing . I mentioned the Bug Bomb since someone in this thread mentioned spraying around the cage , the floor etc. , Since it uses the exact same active ingredient as the other products mentioned in this thread why waste time spraying over areas of the room when the ANIMALS AND WATER BOWLS CAN BE REMOVED ( as mentioned in my last post ) and the entire room taken care of in one fell swoop. Mites are known to travel so why take chances.

Does anyone remove their entire collection , ventilate the room after hitting a few cages or slots in their racks before moving everything back in? One would like to think so but it doesn't always happen. When you get right to it even putting the no pest strip pieces , no matter how small , isn't doing great and wonderful things for them either . Try putting yourself in a 4' or 6' neo , dropping a section of pest strip on the vent and see how you like breathing it in for a few days . Are there not those same warnings or something very similar on the no pest strips?


Try calling those folks yourself for $100 words and they won't say anything nice about any of them . Bug Bomb , Aerosol can , both are the same thing , one uses a manual control for spraying , one doesn't . I use common sense and utilize my ability to read plain English and pass along what I learn for free so no charge.

P.S. Mites can also be spread from food items . Good rodent breeders treat their colonies for mites, parasites etc . For those without the ability to take in frozen rodents even buying live and prekilling it before feeding can spread mites , even visiting a shop with mites can pick up hitch hikers , not just new arrivals .
