Question on feeders and some pics

Pics and a question. The pics are of a female HCT a male Jungle Albino and a closeup of my female Hybino. The question I have is how many of you guys breed your own feeder insects and what kind do you breed. I breed mealworms and superworms and am thinking about breeding silkworms. I would make this a poll but I can't figure that out.

I started to do mealies myself about a month or two ago. Also have you ever thought about roaches. I have heard they are very easy and prolific if you can get past the fact they are a roach!!! Silkworms I have heard are ok but they need special food and care. Not speaking from experience but some people told me that in a previous thread. Nice leos by the way.
 
i bet the best thing for them would be scorpions considering its what they prey on in the wild. that is, given they didn't genetically trade in there scorpion killing instinct for a longer carrottail! lol!! amongst all of our efforts to make a prettier gecko we may have bred out that instinct. i wonder how a domestic leopard gecko would do facing a scorpion but i just dont have the heart to risk the safety of one of my animals.

honestly i dont suggest trying to feed your geckos scorpions but finding something thats nutritionally similar would most likely benefit the health of your gecko.

my geckos eat small mealworms, pinkies (for the ladies mostly), and love waxworms and even more so SILKWORMS.

heres one thing i recently tried with a few of my geckos. i got a self maintained little goliath worm (tomato worm) farm that included eggs and feed. once they grew to the right size i feed em off to the appropriate gecko one at a time. most of the time theyd excitedly bite it once and let go, smack there chops a little and get the taste in thier mouth and dive right back in. i was very careful and watched closely because, im not sure, but i think goliath worms bite. at least it looks like it. either way it never came up, the geckos are extremely fast hunters.

anyway, i think geckos get bored with mealworms or crickets everyday. wouldnt you? i mean, i like tuna but i couldnt eat it everyday!
 
I breed lobsyer roaches. I tried breeding mealworms but they were too slow and I ended feeding them off before I could really get them going. I used to breed crickets but I wouldn't do that again unless I was paid a LARGE sum of money...very smelly and noisy. I was paying $80 - $129 a month on feeders until I bought the roach colony and started breeding them. I still supplement with mealies and waxies. My geckos wouldn't et the silkworms :shrug01:
 
I agree with what has been said about the roaches. I breed lobster, orange head and discoid roaches. Before I got the roaches I was breeding mealworms and superworms but they were just becoming too much work. I didn’t like the crickets anymore so I got the roaches and I haven’t had any crickets for several years now. Now if I only had the room I would breed and feed nothing but roaches as I feel they are the easiest to work with. Roaches are the best!

I breed mealworms and superworms, and recently started breeding lobster roaches. I HAVE discoids, but can't say I'm breeding them because they are not reproducing. I'm probably doing something wrong. Have tried breeding crickets and have some very bad words to say about that. I'm still buying crickets but hope that when I get going with the roaches I can say SO LONG to my cricket vendor. (They have those nasty pest fuzz bugs that I hate so much in their crickets too)

Hmm… I have never heard of roaches not breeding. How are you keeping them? You should just be able to give them heat, water and food and they’ll get the deed done.

Yeah, I've never heard of roaches not breeding either, but I'm managing it. I'm keeping them pretty much the same as my lobsters and the lobsters are multiplying like mad. I bought 50 discoids a month ago, about half were adult, now almost all are adult. Not one sign of a new batch of babies (are we going off topic? sorry)
 
Well, they are growing so that’s a good sign. I’d just give them some time and I’m sure you’ll have babies. Let me know if you need more help…
