    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I just ordered a male pastel and Im getting my tank ready before it arrives. I have a 10 gallon tank and I cant decide where I should put my under tank heater. I have repti bark and the heater seems like it would warm the tank better if it were put on the side of the tank since the heat wouldnt flow as good through the bark. What do you guys think would be the best way to have the heat pad set up? Thanks in advance:D

IMO, UTHs don't do a whole lot for heating an open (screen) topped tank. They increase surface temps. As long as you don't go too deep with the reptibark, it will conduct the heat. If you put it on the side, the increased surface temps are in a place the snake can't really access, so the benefit is decreased.

It can be made to work, but it requires a lot more messing.

Ok that makes sense...should I use an additional heat source such as a light or is my UTH enough to keep the snake warm?

Can you make or modify a lid/top so that it holds more heat and humidity? This might be the way to go. Then just put the heater underneath and dont go too deep with the substrate. Get a thermomter to make sure.

I had an issue with maintaining heat in a 10gal tank when I used them. I had good heat right under the pad, but the rest of the tank was room temp, with no gradient. And I couldn't maintain good humidity. The room temp is only 72 degrees during the winter. I put the heating pad on the bottom of the tank, not inside. Covered all but one inch the width of the screen top. I used cardboard at first, then I switched to vinyl. My cool end temps were up and humidity was between 55-62. By the way. I use newspaper for substraight.

yea im having a bit of trouble...i am using a UTH but it didnt give off enough heat to warm the whole tank which is obvious..so I put a UVA lamp over the hide that has the UTH underneath it. After leaving the light on for about 30 minutes the ambient air temp can get to 90 degrees so I turn it off for a bit..Do you guys use ESU timers or Rheostats to manage the heat? I only have ambient air gauges in my tank (temp/humidity) and I put them about an inch above the substrate. Should I get a temperature gauge with a probe?
