Most commercially available Reeves’ turtles are originally from China, but not ours. We have a rare locale that is completely different than anything else; Japanese Reeves’, which were imported in the early 80’s. These Japanese locale have been at the same establishment since the early 90’s, and they just recently been successful with breeding. It’s my pleasure to be able to offer their genetic offspring so this specific locale can flourish within the United States. Japanese Reeves’ hatchlings are a darker brown/black color. As these female hatchlings get older they become a majestic pitch black color in carapace and plastron, something you will not see in the more commonly available Chinese Reeves’ females. The mother is 10” and weights 1800 grams. The common light brown/green Chinese Reeves is on average 6.5” and weights 700 grams. This female lays massive clutches, up in the 19 egg per clutch range!!! Don’t miss out on this opportunity. Reeves are some of the hardiest turtles on planet. They adapt to any environment or enclosure. Dont mean to offend you, but this thread has many misleading info. first ALL male reeves turtles will eventually become all black and females will not. doesnt matter where it is from.. and it is common for female reeves turtles to get 10 inches and around 1500g when it gets older.
Research shows all reeves turtles are originally from either china or korea. BTW, even Japan national institute for environmental studies classified Reeves turtle as a invasive species.

Thank you for the information, but these are produced historic animals that originally came from a well-known curator who had actual locale data on them. They are real Japanese reeves. They’re a locale not an actual subspecies but none the less, they are rare, as they are true Japanese Reeves. Would love to see some of your 10” Chinese Reeves. I haven’t seen any that big, I’m sure they are out there and would be interested in seeing them.

Just to clarify, yes all male Reeves can/will turn black, but these Japanese FEMALES turn all black as well.

So, males do become all black. But only Japanese females are black. Look up the paper on them. The Japanese locale, which was originally introduced, is noted by science to become larger and that black color. It's all in the paper (link below). They were originally reported by Pritchard.

Females will not "turn" black..yes, i have heard Reeves in Japan are overall with darker carapace and plastron..but the skin and eye will never turn black.
and there are some female chinese reeves with dark carapace..

thank you for finding the article, i have actually read that one. notice where it says reeves in Japan and Taiwan are introduced?

Again, i m just here to provide info i know about them. One thing is true is Reeves in Japan do have darker carapace and often have full black plastron where reeves from china can have light plastron and dark plastron(which is not common).
but they are not genetically different, the color is only because of the individual difference.

I understand. Yes....reeves may have been introduced to japan and just like any chelonian that was once introduced to a geographical location by man, they developed their own phenotype over much time. These morphological traits now help to separate them from other local forms. I’m not trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I am selling Japanese locale reeves’ that are and will be much different than Chinese reeves’.
