In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Looking for Ravens and Crows! Younger is better.

Also looking for other relatively common wild birds.

Thanks!

ravens and crows wanted

You may want to check your local laws prohibiting these animals in captivity.

All birds in the US are federally protected except House Sparrows, and Starlings. You can get in a load of trouble owning native species in the US.

You need a federal migratory bird license for sure, most likely a state license too, to even be ABLE to legally have one in your position, for any length of time. You'd be better off getting a European type bird. Maybe a magpie, they're neat and kind of like crows and ravens :)

Native species

I know that all native species are not illegal to keep in captivity. It is legal here to keep mourning doves and pigeons which are native animals. It is also legal to keep sparrows as well. As far as Crows and Ravens I know they are not protected species here because we have a hunting season on them which lasts almost all yr. Not sure about keeping them in captivity here though.

Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (16 U.S.C. 703-712; Ch. 128; July 13, 1918; 40 Stat. 755) as amended by: Chapter 634; June 20, 1936; 49 Stat. 1556; P.L. 86-732; September 8, 1960; 74 Stat. 866; P.L. 90-578; October 17, 1968; 82 Stat. 1118; P.L. 91-135; December 5, 1969; 83 Stat. 282; P.L. 93-300; June 1, 1974; 88 Stat. 190; P.L. 95-616; November 8, 1978; 92 Stat. 3111; P.L. 99-645; November 10, 1986; 100 Stat. 3590 and P.L. 105-312; October 30, 1998; 112 Stat. 2956

Establishment of a Federal prohibition, unless permitted by regulations, to "pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture or kill, possess, offer for sale, sell, offer to purchase, purchase, deliver for shipment, ship, cause to be shipped, deliver for transportation, transport, cause to be transported, carry, or cause to be carried by any means whatever, receive for shipment, transportation or carriage, or export, at any time, or in any manner, any migratory bird, included in the terms of this Convention . . . for the protection of migratory birds . . . or any part, nest, or egg of any such bird." (16 U.S.C. 703)

Look at the list of birds which includes mourning doves and all sparrows, except house sparrows which are not protected. Just because there is a hunting season does not mean you can keep them in captivity. Hence the reason for a hunting permit to shoot them.

List of protected birds

Crows

I never said that you can keep them in captivty. Crows are not migratory either. They are here all yr long. I contacted our game and fish department just out of curiosity to see if they are legal or not. I havent got a response back yet.

You said exactly "I know that all native species are not illegal to keep in captivity. It is legal here to keep mourning doves and pigeons which are native animals. It is also legal to keep sparrows as well. As far as Crows and Ravens I know they are not protected species here because we have a hunting season on them which lasts almost all yr. Not sure about keeping them in captivity here though." Doesn't that say that you said it's legal to keep them in captivity?

And crows are still CONSIDERED a migratory bird. Just because they stay down where it's warm all the time doesn't mean they don't migrate in other places, therefore placing them under the migratory bird category.

Crows

What do you mean doesnt that say that it's ok to keep them in captivity? It says right there I am not sure about keeping them in captivity. Whats the problem?? As far as migratory birds go they are not listed as a Migratory bird in AZ. They stay here when it's snowing as well. I have the regulations right in from of me.

Taken from the list which you obviously did not read:

Crow, American, Corvus brachyrhynchos
Fish, Corvus ossifragus
Hawaiian, Corvus hawaiiensis
Mexican, Corvus imparatus
Northwestern, Corvus caurinus
White-necked, Corvus leucognaphalus

That would be all crow species.

You can still own most of the African and European species commonly seen for sell, captive bred and wild caught (African only). I also believe house sparrows and starlings are covered under a seperate law but I can not put my finger on it at the exact moment, but I do know it is illegal to own them.

Hello,

Not only do you have to look at the laws but also the size requirements of the birds and how best to look after them. These are relatively large birds who would need a lot of space. There is one alternative that may be of interest and that is to purchase (captive bred) Mynah birds. These are slightly smaller but look similiar. They need a lot of attention and are great talkers too!

As always, take the time to research their needs first.

If you do still want to get hold of a native bird, the best way would be to talk to a rehabilitator who may have some that cannot be re-released into the wild. That way, animals are not being captured from their native habitats.

Good Luck

Not illegal

you CAN keep ravens and crows captive but you need to get the proper permits for a "wildlife rescue" not hard to get the permit either depends on the state you live in and you have to follow the guidlines in space requirements for the birds that you keep.
(i.e. 400 sqft per raven) May differ per state
the reason alot of people DON'T keep them as "pets" is because of the hoops you must jump through to have them, as i said varies on state laws and reqs.....................Jase

PS. i hope that sheds some light on things for ALL of you :)

Ravens for sale

i posted a comment before about your topic of Ravens and owning them as pets. if you do not wish to get a permit,(for a wildlife rescue)
then you should look into buying NON- USA Ravens there are about 5 types you can buy and own i will list them for you with a site to pictures.....

African Pied Crows (Corvus Albus)

Hooded Crows (Corvus Corone)

White-Necked Ravens (Corvus Albicollis)

Western Jackdaw (Corvus Monedula)

These large beautiful raven-like crows make fascinating pets and are very hardy great talkers. Incubator hatched - hand fed babies are $900 each.

Since federal law prohibits keeping our native crows and ravens for pets, these exotics are a great alternative

(the only way to keep a native crow or raven is with a wildlife permit but it can be done)................Jase
