    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hi folks, are permits currently required for keeping any rear-fanged species in CA? Notice I wrote rear-fanged in case you think this is trolling, LOL, I know the rules & regs on hots. Are all species legal without permits or is there a banned/permit-only rear-fanged species list? Thanks everyone for the info.
 
Now this is just my google fu and I did not read the entire document. If you have questions regarding a species not listed, I would contact fish and wildlife to make sure you have the most up to date list.

Thanks for the info. The part that interests me, rear-fanged snakes, shows what I had optimistically expected, except for the obvious two bad boys all other species are fine.
 
At least you can have pet gerbils, they're illegal here, LOL! It is a burden for herpers though because a lot of species that are reluctant to take mice or rats will go for gerbils and African soft-haired rats (also banned). Oh well, you can't have everything...unless you live in Florida! ;-)
 
It seems unconstitutional to ban them without offering at least a license or permit to keep. Technically everything in Minneapolis is illegal without a license. Dogs and cats are illegal to own without a license and the city will confiscate your animals here without giving notification required by state law and city charter. That's because they know most people won't have the money or find a way to get the money to fight it. If they really don't want you to have any animal especially reptiles they will look for anything they can say is animal cruelty even if they make it up which they will and have. Until enough people start standing up we are going to have all these problems with our cities and states. Remind you it's not experts that make these laws or ordinances. It's the people who fear reptiles or don't understand them at all.
 
A quick note on politician's ignorance: In San Francisco back in the 90's they decided to put restrictions on snake ownership because one of the braindead supervisors in that city saw a movie about an anaconda or something and panicked. They banned "constrictors" with no other defining language given. Both the ownership of them and the selling of them in reptile stores! The most popular snake pets back then ball pythons and red-tails were made illegal. This meant owning an 18-inch long adult male Kenyan sand boa was illegal because constrictors are dangerous snakes, but having a 10-foot rear-fanged adult wild caught False water cobra or an 8-foot Mangrove were legally harmless and perfectly fine to sell in shops and to keep! Now the fun part of San Francisco is if you go to a park there on weekends you're likely to see someone with a boa around their shoulders rollerblading or having a picnic with their pet ferret (also illegal in the city and banned throughout the state) laws seem to be very loosely enforced there for various items, LOL! All they did was highly damage the profits of S.F. pet shops and give huge new business to places outside the city like East Bay Vivarium. Just goes to show you the severe lack of knowledge or research done by politicians when it comes to writing laws about herps, always stay aware and informed of what they're up to and fight their stupidity whenever possible.
 
Oh, in case anyone's been to a Cow Palace reptile show and is wondering why constrictors are allowed it's because technically the Cow Palace is outside the city limits in a different county so S.F. rules & regs don't apply to it. That's also why it has gun shows, S.F. would ban them in a second if they had any jurisdiction, luckily for freedom and democracy they don't! ;-)

It is legal (I am not a lawyer) to get frozen soft furs shipped. I assume frozen gerbils also. Once dead, they are a "food product" or "meat product", if I remember correctly.
 
I was referring to animals that will only take live, I am aware of the extremes some have to go through to maintain their animals (I have friends who get frozen tiny frogs shipped from FL to CA) as far as gerbils go, the American Gerbil Society (or whatever it's called, LOL) has hundreds if not thousands of members who live in CA (so does the national ferret whatever ;-) both these clubs are for pets that are banned in CA. If people are willing to keep banned animals as pets, I'm sure there are desperate herpers all across the country breeding banned animals for their snakes that only take live. Although outside Hawaii I can't imagine a state with more banned mammals than California.
 
I should add it doesn't help the situation that the state that shares a huge border with us, Nevada, is one of the least restrictive when it comes to pet mammals. Their reptile restrictions surprisingly are horrendous, just the opposite of ours. You won't believe how many Nevadans I run into at CA herp shows! ;-)
