In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

regarding thread "tags"

Tags purpose are to boost search engine optimization for a website (and to make a quick way for users to find a particular subject on the search page). Tags have become very popular and began to be a key player on Google when the blogging platform WordPress became popular. I would hope that members will use the tool responsibly from now on as they help Fauna on search engines.

One of these days I need to look into those admin options for tags. It was in the last upgrade done here, and I just enabled it without looking too deeply into the pro and con aspects of it. Seriously, I often take a lamebrained attitude towards things thinking that everyone here will use things like this in only a positive manner. I really wish I could see who put into place those inappropriate tags on threads so I could weed those people out of this site. I'm about tired of those destructive and malicious personalities infesting the joint.

Ditto. I bet it's only a handful of people ruining it (and other parts of the site) for everyone else. *sigh*

And they might already be gone. Rich has been doing some major housecleaning! :yesnod:

Tags are pretty useful as search terms. Rich, is there a way to make them generated by the program rather than user generated?

I'm keeping a keen eye out for those kinds of folks lately. This place will never become purely heaven to administer, but I do intend to make mine and the mods job easier by eliminating those folks whose overt and covert actions appear to be solely malicious and destructive towards everyone else. I'm not meaning to cut way back on FREE expression of controversial topics, but I do intend to cut out those folks who are making this site unpleasant for a majority of others just because they enjoy that sort of role they are playing.

Quite honestly, I am real comfortable with those people I have already permanently banned being gone from here. At one time that bothered me, but I guess I've grown into the role I really need to be here. It's not just my skin I needed to harden, but also my attitude. I just cannot delegate that responsibility nor authority, apparently. It's my nettle that I need to grasp and just get it done.

If I can just get this site on a really solid financial footing with that albatross of the BOI around my neck, things might actually become quite interesting around here.

We shall see, I guess...........

the thread tags are very useful on the BOI when there are multiple threads one is trying to look up. Until they were added in the upgrade, doing a keyword search was more or less hit or miss if someone misspelled a name in the title or something... i.e. it was not likely to come up with other threads on the same person. The tags allowed another way to tie BOI threads together.

Rich, I keep getting...

You do not have permission to create tags. You may only use existing tags.

When I try to create tags (cornsnake, granite, stripe) for my classified ad. There is no way for me to know what tags are approved and what aren't. I don't think not allowing users to create new tags is going to work out too well...

Yeah, I know.... But it's not real high on my priority list right now....

I decided to re-enable tags for threads, but with some notable restrictions and caveats.

  • Only paid members can CREATE new tags.
  • Registered members must use already existing tags.
  • All members can apply tags ONLY to threads they have created.
  • No one (except mods, of course) can apply tags to someone else's threads.

The reason I closed down tag creation was because it was abused by some people and tags that were not appropriate and clearly abusive were being used for a number of threads on this site. Since I have since removed all of those abusive tags (which was actually a pain in the butt to do), and the restriction is in place for new tags only being able to be created by paid members, AND all members can only apply tags to threads they themselves create, then the assumption will be that any abusive tag applied to a thread will have been created by the thread owner. While this certainly may not be true, anyone USING such tags, regardless of who actually created them, will incur the same penalty as if the tag had actually been created by them.

So hopefully this will greatly limit not only the creation of such tags, but even the actual use of them, even if they do get created by someone with that authority based on membership level.

I guess we'll just have to see how this works out...

Logical solution!

Does anyone have any further info about this? I too am curious what tags are available for a thread.

Thanks
