• In the past two days I have gotten emails asking about being requested to provide credit card info in order to register and also to make a post in the classifieds forums. PLEASE NOTE: In no instance will this site ask you for this sort of information. The only time any request for payment is made is if you choose to opt-in for a higher membership level, and that is done SOLELY through PayPal. Anything else is coming from a source other than this site. My guess is that this is coming through Google Adsense, but when I can get someone to send me a screen shot of this sort of request, I will know more.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

My knowledge on how to register a site is very limited. If I want to register for example www.mysite.com. Where do I start? Can anyone walk me through the process? Suggestions?

I would really appreciate any help.

It's very easy and I have my domain registered through directnic.com. Just look under Basic Options - Register Domain Names and follow the instructions.

Well,

Now that I have my domain registered. What;s the next step, find someone to build me a webpage. Anyone could recommend someone that does a good job for a decent budget.

I do have a tripod.com page. Can this be transfered to my new domain?

You'll need a server to host the site if you're wanting a normal website. I use Rich's server at FaunaNet myself.
You'll have to change the DNS pointers on the domain to whatever your chosen host gives you, then wait for the domain to update in 24-36 hours normally.
The site from tripod can be moved. Just save all the files and upload them to the proper directory on your host server.

As far as building a website, unless you want something really flashy you can easily learn to code it yourself. The net is full of how to articles.
I do my entire site myself and learned how by reading various things on the net. My site is a basic site code wise, no flash animation or fancy frills, but it's easy to maintain.

Just contact Rich and he'll set up the account and explain the details on where to put your files etc.

You can do this with the place where you registered the name. I use GoDaddy myself, so it may be a little different, but the process will be similar at least.
You'll log into your account with the registrar where you purchased the name. It should list the domains you own. I don't know the format there, but somewhere there will be the option to change the DNS pointers. Rich will give you the numbers that point to his server. If needbe I'm sure the registrar has a FAQ that will cover the process.
Once those numbers are changed, the domain name will be parked on Rich's server.
He will be able to help you further on this.

Yes. You'll need to keep the current directory structure or the links will not work properly.

I have had a few people who didn't want to handle these details, so I did it for them. As long as your domain name is available, I can register it for you and set it up on my server. Of course, I have to charge a small fee for this, since the money has to go through my account. But it certainly does save you some headaches if you make some errors in the process.

The problem is that I can hardly justify right now building a web page and paying yo host the domain (I did buy the domain though). Nevertheless I will have to do it in the near future and when I do it will be with Rich at fauna, no doubt about it. Is the least I can do. I just finished building a detached reptile house, and I'm in the process of putting together my breeding stock. In the region where I'm at it has to have heating in the winter and AC in the summer, that's pretty expensive. I sell limited animals that I breed each year as well as other that do not fit in my future breeding plans. That hardly pays the bills at this point, particularly when at the same time I'm buying breeders. My plans are to go full time in a few years.

That sounds like a dream of mine. Doing something you actually love to do. I think if you can find something you love to do and make a decent living at it then you have a good definition of being successful. I wish you all the best.

On another topic.........This whole computer stuff can be a whole 'nother hobby itself. I have almost mastered getting digital images downloaded and transferred. I think i might wait to get the domain and site going. I don't really need one anyway. Well have fun.

OOPs!!

Well that would depend on what you call freezing cold. Everybody has a different opinion. LOL. That must be real fun. Doesn't it get like 40 below at times? I thought I moved somehwere cold. I moved from Southern Cal to NorCal this year.
