• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Replies on ads, are they really needed or wanted?

How do you feel about the replies on the ads?

I hate to say it, but there is one thing I can not stand with the classifieds, that you can post replies on them!!! It just seems tacky and unprofessional to me. I understand you may want to post something about the ad, maybe the seller is misrepresenting the stock, but can't you do that on the BOI or the forums? People are using the ads as a forum now, and personally, I just don't like it. Do we really need the replies? Are they helping anyone selling the animals? Are they helping anyone from being screwed over, I mean, they can search the BOI!

Justyn - I whole heartedly agree

I just deleted an ad of mine that had 10 replies to it. I am selling a new project - and everybody and their dog was chiming in - telling me I should call them this - or commenting, "is that my animal" - etc.

I really don't mind the criticism or comments - but put them on the BOI or the forum - but not when a person is trying to sell some stock.

Everytime someone posts - i feel as though i have to respond - in order to get the focus back on the product.

Rich - you're my guy - but please tell me why you let people respond to ads.

Please shut that feature off. Thanks!!!

Well, like anything else I do, some people will like it, and some people won't, so there was no doubt in my mind that this would be the same way. I did try it for a while where the ads could not be responded to within the thread, but the more I analyzed what was going on, the less I liked it that way.

For one thing, there were too many "hit and run" posters. Basically posting an ad and then not coming back, not even to remove the ad if and when the animals were sold. By opening up those threads for replies, it would greatly behoove the person posting the ad to come back to check on it in case there were replies posted that could mean making the sale for them. Some people just WANT to discuss the transaction that way and will not reply via email or PM. Sure as shootin', if one person has a particular question, there are likely dozens of others with the same question on their mind as well. So let it be answered publicly right there along with the posted ad.

Secondly, it seemed kind of foolish to have the BOI on this site, yet allow people to post ads that could snare the unwary who would not think to check the BOI first. A simple reply from someone in that thread could easily save someone from making a very bad mistake. Sure, some of those posters will certainly get angry about this, but what would the result eventually be? Yep, they will just go away, which I think would be in everyone's best interests anyway. I am more interested in protecting the general public from getting burned in a scam than I am in protecting a seller from a possible heated discussion, so the tradeoff seemed more than fair to me. Will it become a mini-BOI? No, not likely when the original poster of the thread can delete the entire thing at will. It will be a self healing process when those sorts of wounds fester here and there.

Yes, there will be some distracting discussions, that could possibly get heated at times, but look at the bright side of this: People are attracted to threads with lots of replies and views. So the silver lining to that cloud would be that LOTS of people would be noticing YOUR ad. The more people noticing it, the greater the likelihood that a sale might result from those views. Plus EVERY time a reply is posted, it bounces up to the top of the forum, which is certainly a bonus as well. Of course, this can be abused, but that will be handled effectively when it does happen. Simply BUMPING an ad to the top will get that ad deleted when this tactic is discovered.

Of course, I am willing to listen to both sides of this discussion, but having tried it both ways, I have yet to hear a strong enough argument to revert back to the non-reply method I used previously.

Thanks.

I like being able to reply. I like it A LOT.

Mostly because it's important to be able to ask questions about whatever is advertised. It makes a lot more sense to do it in the thread than to have 50 people email a seller to ask the same question, right?

After some reflection on this issue, I decided to compromise a bit. What I have done is to enable registered members posting ads to be able to open or close their ads to replies. This way it is optional depending on what the individual poster wants to do about the reply situation.

This makes it YOUR choice when you post your ads.

thanks rich . . . .

. . . sounds like a good solution to me.

I appreciate the thoughtfulness on this decision. Either way you went - I knew you would think it through. That's what I like about this site!!!

I had been dead set against the idea of replies... Until I noticed a few people selling animals illegally and chimed in myself, under their ads. So I can now see some positive aspects.

I think the solution is a great one, if someone doesn't mind discussion, they can have it... If they do and there's something wrong, there's always the BOI.

I just like the idea that if someone posts a bogus ad... They are more likely to get busted on it if people can reply right there in public.

If it help even one person from getting ripped off. Then its worth all the other drawn out replies on all the other legit ads .... Just my opinion.
