I know I stated I was going to wait on necro results before I posted but in light of recent events I don't see how I can wait. I am not bashing anyone here just giving the facts on the snakes in question of mine.
My name is Bob Brown, I purchased six snakes from Doc Walker in February.
They arrived here in London on the 18th, Doc forgot to send me the tracking number so they had to sit at Fedex until the morning of the 19th. The snakes arrived in a non insulated box which I thought odd since my other snakes had arrived in one. I was told by Doc to feed the snakes that weekend becuase it had been ten days since they had eaten last. I knew better but I followed his advice and fed them. Five ate the hypo sk was in shed and he was fed after his shed which was a couple days later. There were no regurges from any of them. I have the emails of what I have just said if someone can tell me how the best way to put them here I will.
The hatchlings once in my care were put in idividual six quart sterlite boxes, I use newspaper instead of aspen, they were put on a five day feeding schedule. I will admit a couple of times they were fed on the sixth day and once on the seventh. The boxes are cleaned twice a week and clean water is available to them at all times. I raise my own mice and rats and every snake in my collection is fed from these. They were kept at from 78 to 82 degrees f.
On March 20th the first hatchling died, she had been fed five days before and had no regurges. She was lethargic, limp when picked up and soon died that day. At the time I chalked it up to you will lose one occasionally. The rest of the hatchlings looked fine and acted fine at that time.
On March 30th I contacted Doc about an adult female amel he had listed for $125 shipped and told him about the hatchling dying. He told me he would throw in a replacement hatchling with the order of the adult female. So I agreed. At this time I really didn't think it was a problem coming from Doc Walker and told him so in the email. At that time I had not seen all the posts on here and other sites about snakes from him dying. The replacement was not what I had originally ordered and he gave me 3 to choose from but when I made my choice he was out of them, this was a 2 day time span. So I got an amber female ph butter. The price was $130 shipped for the two when the adult was listed at $125 shipped and I paid pay pal fees. The snakes arrived on 4/5/11 and I picked them up early. They were in the smallest box I have seen anything live shipped in (I still have the box) I made the box into a temporary hide for the adult female. When I arrived home I noticed another sick female from the original six I purchased. She had regurged though and showed the same symptoms as the first female that died. She had been fed four days before. She passed away later that evening. After I got the two new snakes settled in I wrote Doc Walker and told him the snakes had arrived and were alive and that I had lost another hatchling. At this point I had really begun to doubt myself and asked what I was doing wrong. I explained the symptoms and thier appearance that they looked dehydrated and emaciated but all had water and all were eating well. I had sent this as a reply and not a new email so he changed the email subject to dehydration issues. After emailing Doc I was frantic for help and posted a thread both on fauna and on two other sites. All I was asking for was help, I did not bash anyone or blame anyone.
On 4/10/11 my male hypo sk died, he had regurged two days before and had been fed 4 days before he died. The females went quietly I say him die and at first he acted like he was coiling on a pinkie and rolling like that over and over, then he was gone. The two females died with thier mouths closed his was wide open. It looked painful when he went. But I know that is just guessing upon my part.
I have another male from the same purchase that regurged the day the male hypo sk died, and then two days later I was watching him and he started acting funny and he tried to regurge again but there was no food in him.
At this point he is still alive and I have kept everyone updated on him and the whole situation. And will continue to do so.
I am sending two snakes to be tested and as soon as that comes back I will post all results on here. I would like to thank all who have responded with kind words and thier wisdom. In my last email update to Doc Walker I told him all that was going on and that I had posted a thread for help. He told me that he wished I had not done that and that no one could help me with the snakes other than telling me to get them necropsied. And told me he has no snakes dying in his collection. I really wanted to wait on posting this here until the results came back but with so many urging me to go ahead and one of the people trying to help me being threatened over snakes dying I felt I should go ahead and tell what has happened here. I have pics of the dead snakes I have the emails where I have updated Doc Walker on the snakes.
I will gladly put them all here if someone can tell me how to do like the screen shot of them or something. Cut and paste is easy but I don't want anyone saying the emails were changed in any way. Also one of the biggest excuses about the snakes dying from any of us involved is that we are new to snakes and is our fault. I got my first snakes in 1985 and in the 90s is when my collection grew and expanded. I kept everything from corns to hots and we did breed and hatch corns, milks, kings and some live bearing pitviper offspring.
No I am not an expert, I still learn something new every day. I think when it gets to the point to where we still can't learn we should find something new to do.
Ok with all this said, here is what you can bash me for and I will accept it. I only quarintined the hatchlings for three weeks, but the rest of my collection is fine from what I can tell at this moment. I don't wiegh the snakes and I am bad at keeping feeding records. I know when they eat and don't for the collection is small. And as I have stated they all ate up till they died.
I have not asked Doc Walker about the other people with snakes that have died, maybe I should have. In his last email to me he was more worried about people starting on him and finding out where the sick snakes came from than anything else.
As I have stated I have all the emails and pics. I can provide up to date pics on them and the rest of my collection so you can see the rest of my snakes are healthy and well taken care of. If you have questions you can pm me here or send me emails to
[email protected]
I will answer all questions put forth. I will end this with saying I am ashamed and sickened by the threats to Nonvenomous over dying snakes. What have we become for this kind of thing to bare its ugly head in our community.
