    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Respitory Infection..PLEASE HELP!

ok what r some symptoms of this problem? One of our dragons is having some issues and I am leaning towards respitory infection..let me remind you ( even though its not my decision) we keep oir lizards on sand...we just got done having an issue with this with our female Aries..( she had sand in her eye and it caused a clog in her nose and pressure behind the eye..vet removed clogg and now she is on antibiotics and eye drops...) anyway, from what I THINK AND HAVE READ he might have a respitory infection..if so then I AM GOING TO TALK TO MY FIANCE ABOUT THIS SAND ISSUE...he is gaping his mouth but he looks to be breathing alright..he has a UVB light, temperatures in tank a0re 105 on basking side and around 803 on cool side.He is kept in a 55 gallo9n tall glass tank with screen top. He has been eating fine here lately until this morning when I put him in the tub he started acting sluggish and weird..he isnt sluggish anymore but he is gaping his mouth open AND I AM CONCERNED...EXTREMELY!
 
My male, Flash, had a BAD respiratory infection this spring, but it was due to receiving some VERY poor advice on brumation techniques, nothing to do with keeping them on sand. (My adults are all housed on sifted playsand) It started with him being sluggish and his appetite decreasing, and I did notice a little more gaping than usual, but didn't worry much at first because he DID seem to be breathing fine. It didn't take long and he was in BAD shape, and long story short we almost lost him. If you have ANY thought that he may have RI, I'd take him to the vet ASAP. If you can raise his temps a bit, that may help until you can get him in there.
 
you need to try and get the temp up about 10 degrees on both sides, still leaving one side slightly cooler, and get the dragon to your vet as soon as possible. also try to up the humidity a little, not too much because these are desert animals. If you value your pet you should take this as serious as if it were your own child. Or better yet, yourself.
 
well I DO VALUE THIS LIZARD, not as a profit but as a family member..thats why I am concerned and asking questions. He is going ot the vet saturday morning to see if something is up...thats the earlieast we can get him in there....keep yuor fingers crossed for us guys!!
 
Debra, have you bumped the temps up at all? That would be the first thing I would do while you wait, and also make sure he is staying hydrated.
 
Yes Cathy I did. His basking is at 110 as we speak. We took some purified water and gave soem to him by dropper just to make sure he takes in water. He sometimes will and sometimes wont draink in the tub so instead of waiting for him to drink I went ahead and gave him alittle water by dropper today. I gave him an hr long warm bath today and he started to act liek his normal horny self when he got outo f his bath lol :) He ate alittle more also. I dont know if maybe he just wasnt feeling his best or if he is sick but I am not taking chances so he will go to the vet anyway saturday morning along with our little aries...she had and eye infection so she is on antibiotics and drops.. I hate how one goes bad and then another starts getting sick!!!
 
Glad he seems to be feeling better! If he's drinking water willingly from a dropper, that's great too. The only thing I could get Flash to drink was apple flavored Pedialyte, but that was very good for him as well, he needed the extra "oomph" that it gave him. I'm glad you're still taking him in for a vet visit though......they can go downhill quickly if it is an RI and it isn't treated. Be sure you let us know how the visit turns out. :)
