Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Robert Frank (Lawson's partner in crime) FINALLY CAUGHT!

Maybe this already happens, but it seems to me that it might be a good idea to pay a few guys to do some "undercover" work during the shows. Let them wander around looking like potential customers and let them focus on areas that seem to be vulnerable to shoplifting. A place that would be more vulnerable is a table that is really busy which a theif knows makes it easier to blend in and snatch something. Or just follow people that look like they are dressed to steal. I don't mean to sound like I am stereotyping, but a young male with baggy clothes and a knapsack that seems to be a bit of a loner would be someone ANY retail store would be watching so I would do the same at a show.
Also, it might not hurt to boldly advertise at the show that their are undercover workers on the lookout for theives. That alone should be somewhat of a deterrent and would certainly make a thief a little bit more nervous.

Ken.... the point about leaving the backpacks and purses in your car (or at home) is on the same par as not being able to bring your own animals into the show.... if it is printed right on the ticket, and in the ads, the showgoers would already be warned about this and make some other arrangements as to what to bring (and what NOT to bring) to the show.... it can be easily done, and it would stop a lot of "potential" thieves from coming....

Of course, a little due dilligence by the dealer is also the best way of stopping these people.... I have personally alerted the security guards to a BUNCH of people that "looked" suspicious.... you know, standing at a table and looking around while holding an animal or deli cup, just acting very nervous for no reason.... that type of thing.... I have watched them myself, and as soon as they left the table, I went to the dealer and asked if anything was missing.... we've all (the dealers) got to watch out for everyone else at the same time we're watching our own.... you can't see everything, but if everyone knows that a lot of other people will be watching, too.... it might ease their minds a little when their backs are turned....

You can also buy the fish netting at any fishing store or warehouse, at very cheap prices.... it's probably the most economical way of protecting yourself if you don't have cases with locks....

a receipt may also make a difference. Insofar as being stopped before exiting a place , the security only ask for the receipt to see if it matches up with the # of items purchased. I dont think their is anything illegal about it neither does Sams club, Costco, Walmarts, and many other operations. Had their been a problem, it would have been stopped along time ago.

Jerry, the shows out here on the west coast do require you to show reciepts and do check the animals that you are carrying. The problem with that is that it only works for those who are not breaking the law. A criminal who knows how this works will certainly find a way to conceal the stolen items. It happens every year here. I can name several ways to accomplish this but will refrain as to not inspire the criminal mind. One problem that I will mention is vendors. Vendors who steal, or have people that work for them that steal. Or better yet, people who ask thier vendor friends to bring thier purchases home for them. You know, "Im going to be out shopping all day would you bring my items home and I will pick them up from you later." That happens ALL the time. Especially in Daytona where vendors will ship animals home that their friends purchase along with their own. I have heard it all over the years, and it makes me sick.

As far as Costco and Sams Club and Walmart. The fact that they search reciepts and bags has been litigated here in California and the stores have lost on many many occasions. I dont stop for them anymore either. I had a guy follow me out of costco and grab my arm and tell me to give him my reciept. I told him to go to hell and refused. They called the police and I applied my right to privacy. I explained to the officer what was going on and he chastized them for wasting his time. You do NOT have to concent to thier search of your items as those items are YOURS the moment you pay for them. The reason they still do it is because people LET them do it! I for one, do not take kindly to an invasion of my privacy.

So, what do I say to those who would ask "if you have nothing to hide, then why not let them search you?" I would tell them that my right to privacy is an essential liberty. Can you imagine the people who sold you your house just walking right in because they are conducting searches to make sure that you do not have stolen property? That is an invasion of privacy AND an illegal search. The same applies to your vehicle. A cop cannot search your vehicle without your concent or probable cause, so what makes people think it is any different for your groceries? I am not going to give up an essntial liberty (now matter how insignificant it may seem to others) just so the good folks at Walmart can decrease theft. That is not my responsibility. My responsibility is to not steal.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
--Benjamin Franklin, 1759

I know prior to becoming a police

officer, I worked as a store detective and even if we observed someone stealing something, we were unable to aprehend them until they left the premises. But putting that aside, I think your right, its an unworkable situation basically because vendors stealing could in theory be greater than the paying customer. The answer is basically trying as best as possible to vigilant at your booth and make it as steal proof as possible..........Not much more you can do.

The only other suggestion would be to have a greater presence of security.

Now with regard to some of the other points you made. I am uncertain about the laws in Ca. that pertain to checking receipts and the items that have been purchased, granted since we are not dealing with national security problems, i dont understand the rational behind being stopped either. But until you physically leave their premise, they may have some rights. What they may be , i dont know!, but i dont like it anymore than you. As a matter of fact during the Christmas holiday, their line to leave the stores are greater than trying to get in because they are checking all receipts and matching them to the items. We just live in a crazy world. !!!!

Nice piece of work Neil. Hopefully they will both go to jail, and hopefully the fellow who wound up on the hood of the car is pressing charges along with those who had herps stolen.

As to all the suggestions about thievery at shows and how to prevent - it is up to the show promoter to provide adequate security, but also up to the vendors to deter criminals.

The suggestion about no backpacks or large bags sounds good until a crook buys something on the large side and then asks the vendor for a bag. Now he has a ready made loot sack.

As to being searched at the door, yes it pretty much depends upon your consent. As to those who do not consent, you might be helping the crooks by giving the store dicks a hard time. The younger and dumber crooks especially will take note that the store buckles under with people who are boisterous and will emulate you in also refusing; however they may be refusing for another reason - like because they have stolen merchandise. Or a crook may slip out while you have inadvertantly caused a diversion. The store checking your bag by the way is not what the constitution and BOR is speaking about; rather they both address the government performing searches and seizures. While a search by the store may be illegal if against your will, the evidence produced of any theft may very well be admitted into a court of law depending upon state statutes. I always let them look. However, if one of them grabs my arm because I made it out the door without them looking, well then the seven savage attorneys might have to be called upon for swift legal action and a lucrative law suit.

All the best,

As much as we would love to see this

loser in jail, I seriously doubt that this will be persued by the defendants in the case. I dont think Ben would want to continue to travel to Tampa, and I am sure that some kind of plea bargaining will reduce the crime . I would love to say that I am wrong, but from my own experience, this is usually the outcome.

This loser may end up with a slap on the wrist!

"Hell" of a job Neil! (pun intended)

Give yourself a weel-deserved pat on the back!

Well lookie here.... seems Robert Frank was picked up on that warrant for grand larceny at the Tampa Show, and was sent to the Orient Road Jail until he was bonded out for $2500 pending trial.... I love it when a plan come together....

Bad boys bad boys, what ya gonna do, what ya gonna do when they come for you.... GO TO JAIL.... DO NOT PASS GO!!.... lol

I got permission from Tony Cueto (promoter of the Tampa Show) to copy this excerpt from his PRESS RELEASE for you all to see!!.... enjoy!!....

---------------------------------------------------------

BAD BOYS, BAD BOYS, WHAT YOU GONNA DO.

Robert Frank
Kerri McClam

At the Tampa show I hired security for theft deterance and to
patrol to aprehend shoplifters. It paid off! Our security officer
observed Robert Frank in the act of shoplifting from Ben Siegel's
booth. When I was informed, I called the Hillsboro County Sheriffs
office. While waiting for the deputy, Mr. Frank (a friend of Dave
Lawsons it turns out, small world) exited the show once he realized we
were on to him. Security, who is not allowed to use force or make
arrest, informed the suspect that he had been observed shoplifting and
the Sheriff Department had a deputy on its way to make the arrest. Mr.
Frank headed to the parking lot and security, vendors and I followed
him. We had gone a good distance into the parking lot following Mr.
Frank when all of the sudden a pick up truck pulled up and he jumped in.
The driver of the pickup was Kerri Jean McClam, his accomplice who
had left the show with the stolen animals when she saw security
questioning her boyfriend. What happened next I will never forget. Ben,
Gino, the security officer and I blocked the truck so the suspect could
not flea. With two young children in the truck, Kerri McClam floored the
gas peddle, total disregard for our life, attempted to run us over in
order to escape.
They did get away but security managed to get the license plate
number and fortunately no injuries occurred. On April 3rd the
suspects were picked up by the Hillsboro County Sheriffs department
shortly after 9am. Robert Frank, a thug with 5 previous arrest was
charged with Grand Theft third degree and Kerri Jean McClam faces two
felony chagres of Aggravated Assult with a Deadly Weapon and one count
of Aggravated Battery Great Bodily Harm. Gino Sassini, one of the
vendors that assisted in trying to detain the duo has already been
interviewed and subpoenaed by the Office of the State Attorney to
testify in the case.
We are sending a message to shoplifters and other criminals that we
work very hard and will not tolerate shoplifting at our shows. At the
Tampa show, on the website and throughout the show I had large signs
"Uniformed and undercover officers patrolling for shoplifting.
Shoplifters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." I also
hired security to patrol and it paid off in a big way already, not only
by the arrest of two criminals, one with 5 previos arrest, but in
sending a message to other crooks that if they come to our show, we will
be on the lookout for them. I have zero tolerance for shoplifters. I
have sent the mug shots of these two individuals to other show
promoters. I have contacted Reptiles and wrote an article about the
incideant. I included the mug shots and will plead with the
publication the importance of having the mug shots printed as well.
Tonight, as the show promoter of where the suspects stole from, and
as one of the individuals that Kerri McClam attempted to kill in order
to escape, I wrote a letters to Rebeca Peterson who is prosecuting the
case, another letter to the District Attorny Mark Ober and when a
judge is assigned, to the presiding judge, pleading that these two
individuals be given the maximum, most sever punishment the law allows
and letting them know that this case is being followed and will be
reported on by the media! I am going to send a message loud and clear
that we are fighting back, taking serious measures to stop crooks and
will go to whatever extent necessary to prosecute to the fullest extent
of the law.
It is with great sadness that I must also inform you that there was
another incident at the Tampa show and the vendor is certain that the
crook that stole from him is a fellow vendor. This
is despicable, I have a lead who you are, you will be
watched and when you slip and are caught, I assure you not only
will you be prosecuted and your picture published but that will
be only be a portion of the consequences.
Beginning this summer, at all our shows we will have uniformed off
duty police officers patrolling. In Tampa and Raleigh I have used
security officers instead of police officers because of the enormous
price difference. Typically I pay $16 hour to the security company where
an off duty police officer through the security company runs $28 to $32
hour. This fall I will be increasing only the cost of vendors 1st booth,
$5 and by doing so will be able to afford actual police officers from
then on. Two of the big advantages of this is that they will patrol in
uniform and that they will be able to make arrest on the spot when
necessary. I hope that vendors will understand the $5 increase and how
valuable it is to everyone. Remember, it will be a $5 increase
per 1st table only, not per table. The $5 investment will save you
tremendously.

$32 an hour for uniformed off-duty officers- a steal!! We use them as well at our shows in NY, but with union contracts we are charged $68 and hour!!!

Glad to hear the culprits were apprehended.

It's to bad that the District Attorney is Mark Ober. They will probably get the minimum instead of the maximum with this schmuck!
