    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

FYI, I was told by the Health Department worker who came here (how we found out initially that we may have been sent diseased rodents) that RP could have notified us. I suppose she could have been lying to me, but I don't know why she would. I have been attempting to get in touch with IN Health Dept. to get to the bottom of the records, but from what I understand some investigation is ongoing and records may or may not be public yet. It was not my understanding that RP was told to keep quiet. It also makes ZERO sense that they would have been told to hide this info from us, customers who probably did get sent these mice (and now we know we did get them) because the disease can be so dangerous to unborn children. There is no way we should have not been notified ASAP. Maybe there was no need for RP to issue a blanket statement, but there sure as all heck was need for them to notify ME, and the other customers who were exposed. Sorry John, but there is no worming out of this for them in my eyes.

You have stated Clearly Many times that Your Facility "Zoo" May have been sent Diseased Rodents. The Health Department Came in Person to Explain this too you. What type of Quarantine did you implement at your Zoo and Why have you not Notified all of your Customers that visit your "Facility"? Are you not Guilty of the Exact same Statements that you are directing towards RP?
 
If they have zoo guests in the commissary, that zoo has a much larger issue than quarantine on it's hands. You should probably learn how a zoo is run before you accuse people of things.
 
Has it not been covered that you have to have contact with the infected rodents to have any reason to worry??

I would like to know what Zoo's you are going to where you have come in contact with their rodents lol
 
the kentucky reptile zoo is a primarily venomous facility in which visitors are sufficiently separated from any animals. I've personally been there and never had any indication of where they even keep their rodents. In fact i've been field herping on their property and still don't know. I can't see how it would even be possible for a visitor to come in contact with the virus unless they've strayed off the beaten path. This is a legitimate operation run by knowledgeable people. If anything the guides could have possibly spread it but as they've already stated no one has has any issues.

Actually many zoos do behind the scene tours which can and do include inside the commissary...

They are common at many zoos and at some zoos, for animals like tortoises, people can help with preparing and/or feeding of the animals (look at tortoise tours, wart hogs etc http://www.phoenixzoo.org/events/special_events/special_events_detail.aspx?ARTICLE_ID=100823)

It is not out of ordinary that visitor would be handling rodents (at the zoo I used to work for, we would let people throw rodents to the crocodiles as part of a behind the scene tour)...

Wasn't it determined that the frozen rodents posed little to no thread....so a visitor handling a thawed out rodent wouldn't be to big of a deal

Letting visitors handle live rodents....seems like it would open up all kinds of avenues for a law suit...considering they bite =)

Now we can assume they pre-killed the live rodents, which could be risky...but again we are assuming that THIS particular Zoo even lets visitors in on that kinda thing in the first place.

That would depend on how the rodents were thawed since you would need to worry about aerosolized blood, urine or fecal material (or if you didn't wash your hands)... IF the rodents were thawed in water, people wore gloves, and then washed thier hands, risks are minimial.. However this is tangential since people were incorrectly making statements about zoos not letting people

1) tour commissaries,
2) be exposed to animals food...which oddly enough can include rodents (whether pre-frozen or fresh killed)..

As a liability risk, letting people handle a live feeder rodent (which are often from very docile lines) is much less of a liability risk then the people that climb fences and ignore to put thier kids over the barrier fence(s) so they can get a close up of the kid with the elephant, rhino, koala, lion, insert animal here.... And that is before we ignore random zoonotics like when a bunch of school kids caught salmonella at a Colorodo Zoo from touching a fence around a komodo exhibit...

As I noted, allowing access to commissaries is a wide spread practice and a lot of zoos also allow feeding of certain animals (or in the helping prepare the animal's food)...

I was addressing the blanket claims (since there was some dogpiling on the rabbit starting) that any zoo that allowed access to the commissary with the implication not only was it a bad thing to have happen but it didn't occur....

Didn't say you mentioned letting anyone hold live....was just asking since if I remember correctly, its only the live rodents in this situation that posed a risk to humans. So handling thawed rodents would be a moot point in this particular situation.

I would hope that in general, sanitation of hands is required at any facility that allows this practice of course.

Considering this is mainly a venomous reptile zoo tho...I have a hard time thinking they would let visitors be involved in any of the care taking of their animals

Throwing rodents to some crocs is one thing...dangling it in front of a cobra is a whole other thing hehe
 
but I understand what you mean...yes some facilitys allow this kinda stuff...we shouldn't assume this one does until they inform us of such practices lol.
 
No, the frozen have a risk as well, though it's much less. Let me rephrase what I said earlier. If the zoo knows there's a problem with the live or the frozen stock, they aren't going to let visitors handle them. They'll have the visitors prep something else in a commissary tour. No zoo is going to expose people to any sort of disease knowingly, not if they're AZA.

If they did it without knowing, well, that's RP's fault, isn't it?
 
I bought some mice in Late April and again in June which they shipped mid July because they said they would be "closed for the fourth of July". Seemed like some bs to me why they delayed shipping for over 2 weeks now I guess I know why. I know I shouldn't be freaking out prematurely but I can't help it! I know it doesn't need to be said again but they should've contacted their customers.
