In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Does anyone keep their herp room, heated by one of those portable metal heaters? I ask because now that I live by myself, I don't plan on turning on my heat till later on and not keeping my house very warm (around 60ish). I'd like to keep my herp room around 80 if possible, but I am scared if I use one of those metal heaters that it may cause a fire.

I'm looking at one of these:

or one of these:

*Those two products are just two things that I'm using as examples of what I'm kinda looking for*

Any and all info and tips on keeping my herp room, warm.. I'm ALL ears!

I couldn't get the link to work...

Heaters will be fine as long as you are safe and smart. If you have concerns you can always buy a tile slab (Like around fire places but in a larger size) to set it on. I'd have to see what heater you want to give other ideas. What do you want to set the heater on, tile, carpet, wood etc...

The link's don't take me to the product. The search you ran probably expired. I use a regular small oscillating plastic one, it was the cheapest one I could find. It has over heat and tip over protection and it's connected to a surge protector. This is it's third year and it's still doing fine.

The only space heaters I've ever had catch fire or set my outlets on fire were the low long metal ones and a metal radiator looking one. That was years ago though.

This is it. I copy/pasted from the home depot site. I have it on a wooden kitchen chair and for a tiny thing it does a good job all winter. My house heat sits between 68/72 all winter and I haven't turned my furnace on yet either.

I have been using Lasko Low Profile convection heaters for years, and they have been great! There are no glowing embers, just warm air blown out the top slowly, while rotating throughout the room. I keep thermometers on both sides of the room as well to monitor temps, and with the slight temp difference from bottom to top, as there are a few degrees difference, species that like cooler temps are near the bottom, while species that like it warmer are of course, on top.

The Lasko heater I currently use ( model 5610, which may be discontinued ) is going on 6 1/2 years, and seems to be in no near sight of letting up. I actually have a back up ready to go ( model 5620 which is the digital version of the same exact same, which I don't care for, but was the only one available strictly similar to the model 5610 I have used for so long ).

The convection heaters seem to be more practical, and heat a normal sized room pretty well. I always line the bottom area of my room window with heavy blankets, to keep out cold in the winter and fall months. During the spring and summer months, I do not have to have the heater on all the time, using the outside temps to my advantage with heating the room. Summer, my room is usually warm enough, and I get to turn the heater off entirely. The joy of summer heat in Tx..haha!!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the sugestions. I will be looking into those!

As for the link above, sorry... not sure why it isn't working but here it is again.

I'd like to get something with safety shut off and this does have one:

My herp room has carpet, so I'd either need to set it on something that isn't flammable or remove a section of carpet and put some title down for it to sit on.

i use a pelonis ho-0221 model i think it is with 3 different heat settings and the dial for a thermostat or reostat but i hook it up to a johnson control and regulate the temps that way i use the 419 with the night time drop.

I have a friend who cooked half her collection (and a few of my animals) when one of those room heater's thermostat busted. Not the first time I've heard it happening either. I would back it up with a good thermostat if you do it.

Another friend of mine uses room heaters (the $20ish models), but replaces them every year to prevent probable issues...He also has a much, much larger room then Char had...So I don't think even if his did bust the animals would be in considerable danger.

:iagree:

COMPLETELY AGREE!! ALWAYS us a thermostat when dealing with heaters. those pro fusion heaters are set to not exceed 75 but things do break and go wrong so always good to have it hooked up to a backup. if you need the temp a little higher in the room get you a small walmart oil filled electric heater and use it along with the pro fusion heater to get that extra heat up to 80 or so but use a thermostat for it to. i have everything wired straight to my room so i can see the temps in my snake room all the time. :yesnod:

oh forgot to add, the home depot heater will work good for a back up heater to get that extra temp but it doesnt heat evenly. a heater needs to be fan forced to be able to heat a room evenly, if you are going to use those for an extra boost of heat buy a small fan to put on one side of the heater and turn the fan on low - med, it will push the heat across the room to help heat evenly. those are the ones i use for a backup :yesnod: just remember to put the heater on the far side of the room so the fan can blow the heat completely across the room. let me know how it works out for you

I use the oil filled electric heaters in both the snake room and the rat barn during the winter.
In both cases they are operated with a Ranco thermostat.
They do an excellent job for the money, I think they were about $40 each when I bought them.

There are several types and brands, this one is basically the same as what mine are. Just the first thing that popped up in a search.

There's three heat settings, the highest being 1500 watts, and a dial type thermostat.
I usually just set them on the medium heat setting and turn the thermostat all the way up, then plug it into a Ranco set to whatever I want the temperature to be.

I know this sounds crazy but I get xtra heat off my rat cages from Breeders that heat my snake room up probably a xtra 2-5 degrees depending on temps outside.
