Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

S&S Exotic Animals, Inc. in Texas (Inquiry)

Mr. Sklenar,
That mites came from the bags excuse is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. What responsible reptile keeper is going to ship in filthy bags? Used perhaps, but they get washed before being used again. Only one other person I ever dealt with shipped with unwashed bags and they have a thread for their shipping practices on the BOI.
You got the big green weenie on this one and the dealer owes you.

even if they have mites and/or RI, i'd probably still come back here and give her a 7 1/2 - 8 1/2

i would have offered them MUCH less money had they told me that they were THIS sick and infested with mites

Statements like this REALLY disturb me. There is NO :censored:excuse for shipping out sick and mite infested snakes, imports or not...not only is it poor business, it's just plain cruel. Someone who would ship out animals in this condition shouldn't be dealing with live animals at all...and someone who would condone it probably shouldn't either.

DreamDrownedAtHotmail said:
i'll be pretty upset if they die before i even get to name them..

Yeah, sure, you'll be upset....just think about how upset the snakes would be.

I'm not seeing anything bad so far? The page says:

Serpentine Empire - Small Pennsylvania, USA based reptile/small mammal company devoted to buying, trading and selling Asian Rat Snakes, Corn Snakes and other rat snakes, as well as most other colubrids and boids. There is also an animal adoption and rescue service provided for unwanted or unkeepable animals who need to find a loving home.

At least he doesn't claim to be not-for-profit :ack2:
Seriously, I see nothing wrong with small, private "rescues" that are simply willing to take in an unwanted snake or two. I've considered doing it myself, just because of all the times I've been at a show and had someone come up to me and ask if I want their (sometimes very sick) snake. One big boa still haunts me but I couldn't take it, I was too busy with school to deal with trying to nurse it back to health. As long as this guy isn't running around begging for free animals and donations and falsely claiming not-for-profit status, what's the problem?

XD Ah, you're thinking of the "rescues" that get free animals and then claim they died in shipping and demand a refund on shipping!
I don't see any reason to doubt Mr. Sklenar's story, though I'd need proof to put much stake it.
Mr. Sklenar, some photos would be nice, especially if you had any of how your ratsnakes arrived so we could see for ourselves.

Ryan, Let me get this straight,
After reading the many complaints about this company from five years ago until present, you then read this very recent post:
I just went to SS exotics about three weeks ago and the condition is the same as what is stated above. It made me SICK. She also tried to sell the particular animal i was looking at, singly, which with Sugar Gliders, should never be done, but since she makes more on the cage set up if she sells each one separately, she ignores what is best for the animal, and sells them alone. I also discovered she has THREE THOUSAND breeder pairs! I do not even want to think about their condition. I am looking for someone to call. Because the overall state of her place, and the animals in it, is appalling. She has crammed as much as she can get in there, and on top of that, it's filthy. I wish someone would shut her down, and those poor animals could be taken care of by someone who actually cares more about animals then they do about money! What bothered me more than anything else, is that they claim to be Christians. Don't use God to sell your mess. I don't think God nor anyone else would condone the treatment of those animals.
and then thought "hmm...X-Mas rush...can't be that bad...looks like the place I want to get my animals from...then before you even get the animals you state that if they have mites or an RI, that's OK you would still give a positive rating because getting shipped those cheapo, rare ratsnakes, completely covered in mites and dripping with RI, in the middle of a cold, harsh winter, that will probably die on you anyway is an acceptable business practice for you, are you serious? I mean screw the animals welfare right?
You got not only EXACTLY what you paid for, but EXACTLY what you expected as well. I honestly can not in any way comprehend your actions???

first of all, thank you for coming on.. and 2nd, wow. i feel so naive and taken advantage of.. it's a little hard for me swallow it all down, but it all makes perfect sense. i mean there were a LOT of mites for them to just be picked up from the bag .. and it would be weird that not ONE of the employees would pass on even ONE of my messages.. and about the guarantee: i saw they had live arrival guarantee, but it wasn't until i actually got the box and read the invoice inside that i read that the live arrival ONLY applies to animals picked up at the airport (or something along those lines... anyway, i wasn't covered..). it's sad, i actually gave them the benefit of the doubt and believed every word.. and if it weren't for your help, i may have even foolishly gave them more money for thier pet mites that come with a free snake in the bag for the mites to live on. if it weren't for your inside tip, i might have bought from them again somewhere down the road and Again paid hundreds to get a dead snake in a box without a live arrival guarantee that applies to me, or have a snake only live for a month or so until it dies after spending a lot of money on meds and treatments. so thanks for openning my eyes, and i'm very lucky to have someone who was once on the inside, be willing to come on for my benefit. thank you.

No problem Ryan... I haven't stepped foot in the store in over a year so I couldn't tell you how they operate now. But the condition of your animals should give you a clue. It's easy to use their wild caught status as an excuse for their physical condition, but once you receive wild caught animals from someone who actually cares about the animals themselves, the customers, and not just a quick buck, you will begin to understand where the bar is truly set in regards to quality, even if the animal was not produced in captivity.

Please, let me explain..

i've been looking for these gonyosoma janseni adults for about a year now, dreaming more and more about producing my own young of this species after dealing with gonyosoma oxycephala for so long, and i could not find even ONE adult pair anywhere.. i've been begging frieght freitas for almost a year for a pair, and i've run into a few people selling babies, but no luck finding adults of this species.. let alone exceptionally pretty ones. so when i finally saw this pair available, my heart dropped.. and i was so happy to find them, that i thought that even if they had a few mites or a light RI, i would Still have been so happy to have found them at all.. especially since i felt that if anyone could treat them like the amazing species they are, i could.. and i felt that i'd be able to handle it because i not only have access all of the meds i could need, but i also have a great vet and a lot of experience with gonyosoma ilnesses, thanks to dealing with so many wild caught gonyosoma oxycephala. also, they're worth much more to me than their pricetag value, so i was pretty sure that there was no medical bill that would stop me from bringing these beautiful creatures back to perfect health. so the fact that they even had this pair available after a year of looking, and that they were more than average beauty, is worth atleast a rating of 7-8 points to me out of 10.. so that's where the 7-8 points out of 10 came from.. not because i was pleased to find mites or RI or anything, but because they opened a door for me that i've been looking for for a while. i've been getting gonyosoma oxycephala for a while now, a lot of them come with free mites and RI, and they (the dealers) all tell me pretty much the same thing: they were wild caught/imports.. mites, RI and other illnesses are just something that come with them, there's nothing anyone can do about that since it's expected in the wild caught/import world of the snake hobby. the first few times, i didn't believe them, and i'd buy from someone else.. but they all told me pretty much the same thing at one point or another, so i just assumed that mites and RI were an unfortunate, but accepted, part of purchasing wild caught/imports, so i didn't deduct a whole lot of points from my 7 out of 10 rating. however, after Rapture's post, i started to see that the puzzle pieces actually fit together in a more logical way HER way, than the way that my "blinded by the fact that i finally found them" eyes had previously put together. she pointed out that just because i wasn't Aware that i was "robbed of what i SHOUILD have had", doesn't mean that i wasn't actually "robbed". * As far as the "adoption/rescue" comment is concerned, it is as ophidile said.. i don't ASK for animals (though i Will give them a home when they have nowhere else to go), nor do i ask for (or have ever recieved) donations or any kind of money.. it's all out of my own pocket. i just provide a service simular to an adoption/rescue service, because i AM willing to give any animal a home and care for it until it is healthy again, whether that takes medicine, a lot of rehabilitation, or just a clean friendly house to stay at until a new home is found. since i have the time and desire, and like i said, i have a great exotics vet, i felt that i should offer my services to any animals/reptiles/etc who need it. * about the business name: i do not currently do business under that name as of yet, since it's not registered yet, but i do like to get the name out as much as possible, and let people know to keep an eye out for that name, because i Will be doing business under that name in the future once the registration is complete, and i'd like to have people recognize the name as being linked to me when they see it and trust that the company has my passion and integrity behind it. * about the comment cat_72 said: supporting it was never my intention, and i felt very ripped off the first few times i had recieved sick snakes with mites, but was told over and over (usually post-sale, After i actually FIND the mites/RI) that those things are a common part of the business and part of getting wild caught snakes. i realize that the act of buying them at all, in some ways, makes me seem to support it, but i was made to believe that it's practically industry standard for imports/wild caughts to be sick with mites, and then felt that they'd be much better off in MY hands where i can give them meds and one on one care, than stuck in a small tank in a store with minimum (if any) attention given to them.. please keep in mind though, that each time, i am told they are "in good apparent health", and sometimes they actually are, but often they have some sort of illness or mites. also, i was to understand that this was just the way it was, and so i could only hope they were actually healthy and deal with the consequences when i got them, and just be happy that i have the species at all, then give them the care they need. * about the x-mas rush post: i knew that under normal circumstances, i'd never purchase from someone like what i about read in those posts, since ANY chance that i'd get an unhealthy animal is usually enough to stop me from even considering an animal from that person/company.. but i must admit: the fact that i've been looking for these for so long, and that she had a PAIR of them and they were Beautiful.. it made me WANT to believe they were a good company, and believe the unlikelyhood of their flaws being x-mas based only, and i subconsiously Wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, and believe that they could send me these apparently healthy animals in a professional manor as to get them to me unharmed, even though it was winter. * well, since i think i have just written the longest post of all time,i'll end it here to see if anyone else has written in this topic.. oh, actually, about the pics: before i even had a chance to pull them out of the box, i saw the order form, saying that i'm not covered under any kind of live arrival OR guarantee! ... so once my heart started beating again, i went to open the box fully expecting them to have sent me week-old corpses, since i had just been informed that what i got is what i'm stuck with.. no refunds, no warranty, no guarantee, no exchanges, and no live arrival.. nothing. i pulled them out, and thank god they were alive! however, once i saw the mites, i threw the box out right away. i didn't see any reason to take pics of them while they were this bad, since the less stress the better, and pictures of these snakes sick wouldn't do me any good anyway, since they wouldn't reimburse me either way, whether they died before or after i opened the box, and i'd much rather let them acclimate with as little added stress as possible, instead of getting pics of them at their worst and adding stress without a reason. however, the mites aren't gone completely yet.. their eyes are still puffy and the scales/skin around the eye is sticking up all around the eyes on both of them, but the baytril has helped them enough to where i might be able to take them out for a few quick snapshots of the eyes tonight, if you're sure that would help my case enough to risk possibly adding some otherwise unneeded stress? they've had a few days of alone time to acclimate to the new house, so hopefully it won't be too much trouble for them, either.. but i'd still prefer to only do it if you think it will help my case. i'll keep checking this topic for posts, of course, so just let me know. thanks everyone! oh, and i only put the *'s there to let you know that a new topic is starting at that sentance, just to make it easier to skip around, since it's a long letter. -Ryan

Always a good idea to post pics for anyone else that looks at this thread while considering buying from whatever company the thread is about. Perhaps if someone (myself included) posted their pics of their sick or dying animals, you would have better understood the risk you were taking, and opted for captive bred animals instead. (Support captive breeding efforts!)

Ryan, really think about some of the things you've said...like that you've been looking for adults of this species forever. If you would have bought juvies when you first started looking, maybe they would be adults by now. Things like that that just don't add up in the long run.

And seriously...ask around on the BOI before trying a new importer. There are some good ones out there, and while WC animals are going to always have their issues as opposed to CB, you can find out that receiving sickly, mite infested snakes does NOT have to be the rule.

PARAGRAPHS man!!! My eyeballs hurt after trying to get through all of that, lol. :eek3:

I was going to read that post but then I remembered that you scared the last remnants of "grammar" away with your opening sentence. Seriously - do you see anyone else in this thread writing page-long responses without proper punctuation/capitalization/indentation?

It is difficult to take anything about this poster seriously:
He began by making a bunch of excuses for the seller (Xmas rush, what a joke), and stating that even if he received mite loaded and sickly snakes, he would give them a positive mark...just because they had something he wanted. He states that he has been looking for these snakes for over a year, but his business advertisement states he both buys and sells them regularly. Of course, that doesn't matter because he isn't even using that business name yet, he just wants to create name recognition so people would trust that his business has integrity. WTF??

Lets not wander too far from thread

I guess it's time to break open that piggy bank kid, Freight is selling off a bunch of his Janseni. ready to breed this year for 2 grand a trio. they are worth every penny.
Not to stray too far from the thread S&S exotics should not be in this business. Their guarantee states just that. Any animals sold out of the store ... no refunds! period. any animal shipped door to door No Refunds!
Airport to airport live arrival only. There is no service beyond the sale. they will not back up the quality of their animals with a guarantee, at all. These
are straight up warnings to the buyer that they do not treat for parasites,
medicate the sick or probably even feed them before turn around. Bad guys in my book I would stay away from S&S exotics.
And to the guy that ate it on a pair of Janseni consider this a lessen learned.
Respiratory infections combined with parasites in wild caught animals are a death warrant. No matter how many drugs you can get or how much you think you know, the animal will die. Time to apply for that personal loan and give Freight another call.

I'll post pics tonight, then.. I'll take them in few hours.

Also, about Freight: Yeah, I saw that! I've been BEGGING him for almost a Year for adults, and then within a matter of days from the time I bought these guys, he puts like TEN up for sale! what bad luck I have!

Also, sorry for the grammer.. I can't get the spell check thing to work. It keeps spitting up an error message, so the spelling isn't always perfect. Also, last time I checked, this message reply program doesn't let you put blank lines in between paragraphs unless you use html, though I guess that could have been another website.. I'll find out after this post.

Ok, this paragraph is for Spawn. Well, I don't always capitalize the letter "I" when talking about myself or capitalize the first letter of each sentance, because I'd never felt that those things affected how the paragraph was understood.. it just seemed like more of a formal way of typing, and I wanted to try to consider everyone here to be on the "friend" level instead of "business only" level. Also, I don't put indents on my paragraphs (much like you didn't put an indent in your last message, Spawn, hehe), but I DO try my best to put proper punctuations in when needed, so that it can be understood well. I grew up playing text based roll playing games before I even knew how to type, so I kind of got into the habit of just typing the words and making them understandable instead of capitalizing (though i do capitalize when i yell, or when something needs highlighting) when I'm not working on a professional letter, such as a resume. I'm sorry that you weren't able to read my letter, I wasn't aware that it affected people so strongly. I'll have to try harder in the future to work on my capitalization, grammer and punctuation. sorry, and thanks for letting me know that was an issue.

I would just like to clarify, that I DO buy, sell and trade those snakes, but I have yet to actually sell the Janseni... I merely listed that to let people know that those are the things my company will be specializing in. I currently sell everything I listed, except for the Janseni.. which hopefully will change soon! :)

Also, thanks for the tip on Freight, I always appreciate when someone sends me a tip! :)

Oh, and I DO regret not buying babies and growing them up, but at the time, I had no idea it would be this difficult to find adults.

I'll post pics before the night is done.

Hm..

Well, it looks like it DOES put a space between the paragraphs if I press enter 2x, but it didn't indent any of the paragraphs when I used the spacebar to indent (since the tab just warps your curser to another part on the page, i tried to use the spacebar to add the spaces). I'll make sure I seperate paragraphs from now on though, thanks.

PICS

-----Sorry for the wait, Here is the map to the pics I took:
1JanseniSickSlimeMouthShot.jpg = Shot showing slime in the mouth, gasping for air.. poor thing :frown
2JanseniSickBlueEyeShot.jpg = Shot showing the eye SO packed with mites, that the mites have actually pushed the scales around the eye out far enough to see some blue where there shouldn't be any! :nono
3JanseniSickMitesInCloggedNoseAndEye.jpg = Shot showing the nose, and how clogged it is.. and also is a shot of a pretty bad eye.
4JanseniSickMitesInEyeAndNose.jpg = Another good shot of the eye appearing to be sunken in, when it's actually just that the area around the eyes is so packed with mites that it's shadowing the actual eye.
5JansenSickMitesInEyeAngledShot.jpg = Angled shot of the eye, to show depth.
6JanseniSickShowingPotentialBeauty.jpg = I just wanted to throw this shot in of them, showing the coloring and body structure, to show you how beautiful this snake will be.. if it lives through treatment.....
-----It may be hard to believe, but this is them AFTER receiving baytril for a few days.. I can STILL feel their whole body gargle a little when I hold them and they breathe (when I first got them though, you could hear the gargle from a few feet away..). They don't have a lot of energy, but I've been doing all that I can and more, like: keeping the heat up, humidity down, vet perscribed antibiotics and mite treatment, etc.. and I just stay possitive.. but I wouldn't recommend Anyone go through this with Any snake.. it's so sad to watch them hurt so much.
-----The first good sign happened today atleast... they actually ATE today! so I hope this will work out in the end.. but it's a roll of the dice.
-----After this thread, I've learned to raise the bar a little, and not be fooled by, or purchase from, someone who says the animals are in "apparent good health" and sends you mite INFESTED, sick with RI, weak and sad specimens of what you wanted, and shows no obvious signs of regret for the condition of the animals they sent you.
-----I've learned this the hard way, so learn from my misfortune so you don't get burned and told NO REFUNDS/RETURNS/OR APPOLOGIES after you receive a sick and/or dying animal in pain. Yeah, I checked my emails, and there's wasn't even a "sorry"... and a "sorry" doesn't even cost anything to give to someone!
-----Thanks to everyone who helped me, and hopefully anyone else who will read this post, to obtain enough information to make the best choices when purchasing animals. -Ryan

The store absolutely reeks. My fiancee will not go in anymore, saying it always makes her feel like she needs to take a bath afterwords. My friend just bought a white lipped python there 3 days ago, and upon getting it home and warmed up, noticed it was bubbling at the mouth. Since they were closed Monday, he called an left a message, then they told him to bring it in Tuesday. Upon taking it to the store, he was told to "keep the heat up" and that was it. No apology, no refund, offer to help with vet costs. The sales staff will say anything for a sale. Just Say No!
