Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

S373 Amended Today to 9 Large snakes from list

Wait... and pardon my ignorance, I just started reading up on this controversial bill. My questions:

1) Isn't PETA on our side?

AND

2) Which species are included in this bill IF it passes?

I'm very concerned, as most.

My guess is that you're one of those unfortunate people that peta and the hsus have had snowed for years, making you think that they actually care for animals. Both those organizations are nothing but political fronts, who would rather see animals dead than having to suffer the injustice of being pets. They are very much not on our side.

http://www.usark.org/
I suggest that website for information regarding the legislation.

Call me a sick bastard but i would skin one of them peta members before i would even think about harming my burms. they are like my kids and i will fight for my kids. should i start sharpning my knife now????

Senate Panel Approves Large Constrictor Snake Trade Ban

The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Legislative Fund applaud the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee for approving S. 373, a bill to add certain constrictor snakes to the list of injurious species that cannot be imported or moved in interstate commerce as pets. The committee amended the bill to cover nine species of large constrictor snakes identified by the U.S. Geological Survey as posing high or medium risk to the environment. The amendment was supported by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Sen. Bill Nelson and The HSUS. The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration.

"The Humane Society of the United States is grateful to lawmakers and Interior Department officials for working to prohibit the trade in all nine species of large constrictor snakes, getting ahead of this problem and not facing the next new fad in the exotic pet trade," said Michael Markarian, chief operating officer for The HSUS. "Congress must swiftly pass this important bill to prevent further threats to public safety, animal welfare and our natural resources."

The HSUS and HSLF express their thanks to bill sponsor Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., Committee Chair Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Subcommittee Chair Ben Cardin, D-Md., for their leadership on this measure.

"As stewards of our country's vast public lands and natural resources, we have to deal with the threats posed by invasive species," Sen. Nelson said, adding that more still needs to be done to better regulate all kinds of foreign plants and animals coming into the United States.

If large constrictor snakes escape or are released outdoors, they can multiply rapidly and prey on native wildlife, depleting vulnerable species. Burmese pythons are already widely established in the Everglades, making it difficult if not impossible to remove them, and boa constrictors and Northern African pythons have been found in a smaller area of Florida. Action is needed now to prevent these snakes from spreading further and to prevent other species from becoming established. If only a few species are included, the trade will simply shift from one giant snake to another.

Facts

* A 2-year-old Florida girl killed by a python this year was the fourth person killed by a pet python in the United States since 2006. The others were adults with experience handling reptiles, two of them killed by reticulated pythons.
* S. 373 targets the exotic pet trade. These snakes could still be imported and moved in interstate commerce for zoological, educational, medical and scientific purposes with a permit.
* The bill would not affect possession or sales within a state. People would keep and retain responsibility for existing animals.
* The nine species included in the amended bill are: Burmese/Indian pythons, Northern African pythons, Southern African pythons, reticulated pythons, boa constrictors and four species of anacondas.
* Related legislation (H.R. 2811) was approved by the House Judiciary Committee, which held a hearing on Nov. 6 where HSUS testified in support of the bill and urged an amendment to cover nine species.

Four people killed in 3-4 years. This is one of their arguments. How many people have cigarettes killed in that time frame. How about automobiles. Heck, more people have probably drowned in a bowl of soup at a restaurant. It's very convenient that they fail to mention what a scumbag of a dad that poor little girl had. I can't be the only one who wonders if the snake really did it, or if it was just a convenient scapegoat.

Anything to further an agenda, I guess. I will continue to fight with every resource I have available to me. Even if ball pythons are not on the final list.

I've got a draft working to go to my Senator. I urge everyone to do the same.

Can someone clarify something for me. They stated that they amended 9 large species to the bill. Now is this just Included with the entire python species or is this limited to these 9 species?
Thanks
Kevin

Ok, one of the articles I read mentioned Southern African Pythons and Northern African Pythons but no specific species... is this just a vague description or is there a more descriptive list of the species amended? Does anyone know?

s373

Here is the list i found of the 9 added

Indian or Burmese python (Python molurus)
Northern African python (Python sebae)
Southern African python (Python natalensis)
Reticulated python (Python [or Broghammerus] reticulatus)
Boa constrictor (Boa constrictor)
Green anaconda (Eunectes murinus)
Yellow anaconda (Eunectes notaeus)
Beni or Bolivian anaconda (Eunectes beniensis)
De Schauensee's anaconda (Eunectes deschauenseei)

s373

My understanding the bill as written for all pythons but was amended today to only those 9 species we listed above

bill

The orignal bill was for all pythons from my understanding and they were pushing for boas too but it was amended (rewritten) today to just be those 9 snakes below including the Boa. It dosnt say whether on Boas it includes all but to my believe itss just the large boas.

Can someone clarify something for me. They stated that they amended 9 large species to the bill. Now is this just Included with the entire python species or is this limited to these 9 species?
Thanks

Has anyone seen this, i got it in an e-mail about someone who released burms in FL to help with the Bill Passing

To whom it may concern.

I am looking for commitments to a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s ) that released the Burmese python(s) in Tampa , Florida this past week this week
I have a commitment of 1000 from Ballroom Pythons south and 1000 from Reptile Industries to start it off and a commitment from FWC law enforcement to distribute flyers and information to the area to search for the offenders.
It is my and other industry professionals belief that this animal (s) were released not buy a pet owner but by a criminal with intent to further the legislation of banning large constrictors in the US .
Any commitment must be liquid so that it can be aid in the event that an arrest and conviction takes place so do not commit to it if you can not follow through. We will only be paying the reward if they catch the perps and convict them of Florida Wildlife Comission (FWC) Reptile of Concern violations including but not limited to the escape or release and illegal keeping and housing non licensed ROC , non microchipped ROC over 2 inches in diameter and all the other ROC rules, including possible federal lacey act violations if the animal was illegally brought into the state We are trying to raise enough money to make sure that whomever knows about the snakes release or escape comes foreword to claim their reward and to send a message that the reptile industry will not tolerate the release of non- native species .
We will be sending or commitment letter and numbers to FWC at noon on 12-11-09
We appreciate any commitment to saving our industry that you can manage.
Please send commitment letters to Michael Cole
ballroom @tampabay.rr.com
and I will be the liaison to the FWC Major in charge

Thanks Steve,
Yeah this bill really makes no sense in solving the problem at hand in FL. Not allowing these animals to be shipped will not help clear up the problem. The original bill I was even more outraged with. Pythons? Harmless Ball pythons? I just hope it is limited to those 9 and what I mean is they dont try to branch outward into other snakes before passing.

Branch BACK out you mean. They just tried to include all pythons and I have no doubt they'll try again.

This started with them just going after the 'Big Three' burms, retics and african rock pythons (i think not sure on the last one) then it was the Big 4, then 5, then all pythons and boas, now it's 9.

I was fighting before my boas hit the list. Even if your snake isn't targeted yet, or just dodged the bullet, please don't stop fighting.

They want ALL our snakes gone.

and skinned apparently.

I haven't heard this until now. I'll go look at their site.

It's funny how they found those burms but my grandparents, aunts and cousins used to vacation down there a couple months for years and all they could find (non native) was iguanas and other lizardy things.

I believe the way it is written the following boas would be affected..

B. c. amarali - Stull, 1932 Amaral's boa Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay[26]
B. c. constrictor - Linnaeus, 1758 Red-tailed boa South America[26]
B. c. imperator - Daudin, 1803 Common northern boa Central America and northern South America[26]
B. c. longicauda - Price & Russo, 1991 Tumbes Peru boa Northern Peru[26]
B. c. melanogaster - Langhammer, 1983 Ecuadorian boa Ecuador[27]
B. c. nebulosa - (Lazell, 1964) Dominican clouded boa Dominica[26]
B. c. occidentalis - Philippi, 1873 Argentine boa Argentina and Paraguay[26]
B. c. orophias - Linnaeus, 1758 St. Lucia boa St. Lucia[26]
B. c. ortonii - Cope, 1878 Orton's boa South America[26]
B. c. sabogae - (Barbour, 1906) Pearl Island boa "Pearl Islands" off the coast of Panama
