The only time any request for payment is made is if you choose to opt-in for a higher membership level, and that is done SOLELY through PayPal. My guess is that this is coming through Google Adsense, but when I can get someone to send me a screen shot of this sort of request, I will know more.

In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

On August 16, 2024, the CDC announced investigation of an outbreak of Salmonella derived from “pet turtles” across 21 states. To date, 51 people have been infected and 23 hospitalized with no deaths. Greater details may be found in the report and by clicking on various pages in the report. Part of the report indicates the following sources of turtles:

“Eighteen people in both outbreaks reported purchasing or receiving these small turtles from a variety of locations:
• Street vendors, 5 (28%)
• Online retailers, 4 (22%)
• Souvenir shops, 4 (22%)
• Received as gift, 2 (11%)
• Swap meets, 1 (6%)
• Pet stores, 1 (6%)
• Social media, 1 (6%)
A common turtle supplier to these locations has not been identified.”

So, for this cohort of infected people, “online retailers (22%) and swap meets (6%)” represent almost 1/3 of the infections (28%).

As I reported in FC previously, there are still more Salmonella infections from cucumbers than from turtles and bearded dragons combined.

And backyard poultry:
And fresh basil:
And charcuterie meats:
And cantaloupes:
And dry dog food:
And fresh diced onions:
And ground beef, raw cookie dough, and flour (see the CDC pages).

But we have a Federal law about turtles.

Listeria outbreak caused by contaminated meats from Boar's Head company.

While not a direct relationship to the reptile industry, it is of note that other infectious diseases - caused by retail industries - do not carry the same legal risks and penalties as exists with turtles. Likely there will be civil suits. Unlikely the government will charge anyone at the source or ownership. Here is the current status of the Listeria outbreak associated with Boar's Head meats.
