The NYT has an article today about the destination plans of a clump of sargassum that is apparently going to end up rotting on Florida beaches. I hope they find a way to prevent that. I spent a summer in Key West as a girl and thought the state quite beautiful, it doesn't deserve this kind of disaster.

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Seems that when Connie and I would spend more time in the past going to the beaches here in Florida, there were always periods where some form of seaweed or another was washing up on the beaches. Sure made the water unappealing and the odor of the rotting vegetation on the beach sort of spoiled the day too. But the seabirds sure seemed to enjoy digging through it looking for easy meals.
Never really paid attention to what time of year was the worst, though.
I remember one time going to the Manasota Key area and red tide was pretty strong. Honestly, it was very difficult to breath on the beach. And your eyes would water like you were exposed to tear gas or something. Of course, no one told us that it was a problem BEFORE we got down there. I will say that it seems that this red tide problem is getting to be more of a problem every year. Seems to sustain itself longer and be more widespread in areas up and down the Gulf coast. Used to be just a problem in the later summer months, but now it seems to show up at any time of the year.
Sometimes nature sure can take the fun out of things. Wearing a gas mask while walking on the beach just isn't my idea of a real fun time.
