In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Sav Monitor and Beardie Diets

WOW...I guess this is another of those cases where typed words on the 'net don't quite go over the way in which they were intended. It was meant as a joke (thus the winking emoticon after it) with perhaps a touch of sarcasm...as people who are always looking for a "cheaper" way of taking care of their pets tend to grate on my nerves. But it was a joke, nonetheless.

As for being called childish and told to, "get a life" by a 14 year old for making a joke? LOL, I just consider the source and figure that you simply don't understand the intricacies of wit and sarcasm. Perhaps if I were inclined to get angry, I would tell you to "grow up".....but you have plenty of years ahead of you to do so. ;) (PLEASE note the winking emoticon there)

Well, in this case, we would probably have healthy Dragons. All of the methods we use to feed and care for them now are a culmination of years of research and work by dedicated Dragon breeders. I'm not saying that we shouldn't try to come up with alternatives that may be better for the dragon, but when all of the the information is out there against using fish to feed them (not to mention common sense), it's not a case of trying to do what's best for the Dragon, it's a matter of trying to take shortcuts to simply make life easier for ourselves.

I completely agree. Basically all I said in my first post was, that I have never read a single thing out there, saying feeder goldfish are GOOD to feed to dragons, let alone much of anything else. But, people are still going to feed what they want to their animals, I just care too much about mine to take chances. and I only feed what has been proven for years to be good for the animals, reguardless of what might be easier or cheaper. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

And yes, snails are a part of a wild Sav's diet. I've tried those "Can-O-snail" things with mine, but they were so small he really didnt even see em as food ;) I bought them thinking they were gonna be those bigger land snails.

Feeder fish can have all sorts of diseases. They are kept in a central water system with all sorts of other fish so even if they didn't have a disease when they arrived at the pet store, they defenitly have the potentional have diseases after being at the pet store. Furthermore fish makes their poop smell bad, kinda like fish, and somtimes when you can't get to cleaning their pan for 8 hours, it can really make your apartment reak!

I just recently joined this site and have found it so informative. There is allot of knowledge here, but after reading this thread I realize it is entertaining also!! Having lived in KY for a few years, I can say "Y'all are great!"
Have a good day everybody!! :)

ps. Not sure who wrote about the people who get pets and don't do their research, but just so you know, I am one who has been researching taking care of a bearded dragon for months and am looking forward to my first "baby" in May!! Yea!

So Snails + Beardies = good or bad? I have a lot of snails that live outside my apartment building and all up and down the surrounding streets. I've fed them a few of them, and they seem to like them, but is this ok? I remember reading something about snails' shells being high in calcium or something. Wouldnt that be good for the beardies then? Oh and all these snails are healthy, and there are no pesticides being sprayed around them (otherwise they would be dead) and the ones i have fed to my lizards have all been soaked in water for a while (i thought their shells would retain some water and would be even better for the dragons), and gutloaded with some Spiderplant leaves. Does anyone know about this?

I have never heard of or even considered snails as a food source for beardies. I really don't know if they would be good or bad to tell ya truth. You mentioned one of my concerns about pesticides. My other concern would be the dragon being able to break down the shell. I would hate for the shells to pose an impaction risk cause they can't be digested.

So i checked some of the poop from the dragons. Didnt find any shell remains. I didnt think i would, they can break down mouse bones and fish bones and stuff like that. Idk if this is good or not, and its only temporary until it stops raining. But yea, if anyone knows anything about this, good or bad, plz lemme know.

Goldfish are not the cleanest animals and may contain a variety of parasites. The likelihood of passing on parasites from goldfish is rather high. Scales are also a concern. I have heard first hand of lizards dieing and getting very sick from feeder fish. On occation I still feed my Tegus store bought fish like salmon and tuna but it is a rare treat.

You can't know this for sure. Huge swaths of acerage near human habitations are contaminated by all sorts of garden chemicals. Artificial fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and metaldehyde (snail bait). Just because they aren't dead does not guarantee that they do not have levels of these chemicals in their systems. And it is classic ecology that the upper levels of the food chain, ie carnivores, suffer the most from cumulative build up of toxins contained in the bodies of prey.

Since most of the historically common pesticides are petroleum byproducts, soaking the snails in water will have little affect on rendering them safe. I knew a French citizen who collected the large, common garden snails like they have in California. She housed them and fed them on grain and human grade plant foods for weeks before eating them. The intention of this practice was to rid the snails of as much accumulated garden toxins as possible before eating them.

Regarding the spider plant. Nurserys do use insecticides. If you have not grown it yourself and know for a fact that it has not been sprayed, you can't trust that it is safe.

So, there is a lot more to consider here than appears on the surface. You are trying to "think outside the box", yet ironically, you limit yourself on the ideas just outside and don't move beyond. Speculation is valuable. But facts and the science can't be dispensed with.

I don't know about BDs but I know of many people raising snails for blue tongues. I tried it and they really smell bad but my Blueys love em
