well this will not go over well with most of you.not 1 person that i have contacted on this sit has been willing to do it so i have passed on the purchases.unless you are very well known the only way i will buy from you is C.O.D..i have purchased form many people on this site that are known and have never been ripped off.but if i ask a person to ship c.o.d. and they say no it throws a flag up for me.yes it doe's dealy your money for around 10 days but you do get it.this method is more a protection for the buyer.it doe's cost the buyer more in shipping cost but is worth it to me. i can open the package,if it's dead , not what i ordered, not all of what i ordered,or anything else i can refuse it.now it is sent back to the shipper who now has to pay shipping twice.the sellers are alot more likely to get it right and not mis-represent there product this way.with all the rip-offs,cons,thieves,crooks, and idiots that are out and about right now in my opinion other than going and picking it up this is the only safe way to do business at this time.other than staying with the big names and paying big name prices (which i have done myself).in doing it this way you may lose out on a few good deals but one big rip off out weighs all the other good deals you got.

IF turned into the problem customer yes i can see a problem there also..but all we ever hear about are the problem sellers out there.i do sell and ship c.o.d. no problem when i need to.i personaly have never had 1 order refused.

You're just a problem waiting to happen!.... Obviously, you will NEVER purchase ANYTHING from me.... I would NEVER accept a COD, for just the reasons you state.... not only that, but, you're not ALLOWED to open up the package until it is PAID for!.... COD means "Cash on DELIVERY".... NOT INSPECTION!.... good luck finding ANY reputable dealer who will allow COD.... they're OUT OF THEIR MINDS if they do!!

And, of course.... you're obviously too scared to put your name down.... Isn't it nice and safe behind your computer?....
You're the type of buyer I would AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

Enjoy your buying philosophy.... you certainly WON'T be enjoying any animals....

On dry goods it's not that big of a deal but the seller would still be out the cost of shipping and also out the stock for the time it takes to travel to your location. Not a risk I would necessarily assume on a first time purchase but also not the end of the world if it went bad. I've done this for customers that we deal with on a consistent basis.

Animal sales. I wouldn't ship COD. All the risk is on the animal. You refuse and there is a good chance the animal can die.

A company that cares about it's reputation takes a large gamble with every purchase. Did the customer ask the right questions? Do they really have the experience they say they had when they were hungry to buy that rare animal? Are they color blind (figuratively not literally)? How many of us have eaten $5, $10, $50 on a deal to help satisfy the customer on the other end? Now you want to add to that risk AND have us sit on receivables for 2 weeks. I am assuming you'll want the seller to pick up the extra charges on COD too??

Part of the reason many people take the time and effort required to build a reputation is so that people will be comfortable buying form them (and this is magnified by online sales). That work pays off in dividends when you are not assuming risks like outlined above or sitting on receivables for long periods of time.

neil as i stated i would pre pay from reputabel dealers..not from the unknowns.and no i would not buy from you.not because of bad rep or bad animals or anything but because i personaly find your prices to high for what i will pay.which if yo can get it than get all you can.and as far as opening the packags,i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them .as far as reputabel dealers,i have several i place orders with weekly and all come in cod.as far as my name it doe's not have to be here but anyone can go to profiles and i think but not sure that all my info is in there.

daniel once again reputabel dealers fine rerely a problem.if one has a great reputation then pay up.i am talking the un-knowns(kinda like me on the net).and also i made it very clear that there is more shipping expense to the buyer.

Actually, your full name does have to appear here or your posts will be deleted.
I do not know of anyone in this business that sends live animals COD. I agree with Daniel--it is dangerous for both the seller and the animal.
If you want to ok someone's reputation before buying from them, you can come on here and do a search/inquiry.

C.O.D. ??? Why would you even mess with it? Im looking at this from a buyers perspective. Because (for the most part) that is what I do.

Like Neil said "you're not ALLOWED to open up the package until it is PAID for".
What are you going to do? Give the driver your money, and then after open the package, and find something wrong are you going to go chase down the ups guy?
I have been pretty lucky so far, and havent had to deal with a bad purchase (knock on wood). But it just seems to me that it is hard enough to get your money back if something goes wrong. If you pay by C.O.D. all some dead beat has to say is that you saw it before you paid for it.

ps.
Shouldnt this be under General Business Discussions
instead of the BOI?

jim0602,

Since you are not a brand new person to the Board you should know about the Full name Rule for posting. On the c.o.d. thing. It is a large risk on live animals that is unacceptable to many/most dealers. I am sorry but I care more about my animals than I do the money. I am not about to send a package of my animals c.o.d. where the person might not even show up to pick it up becuase they have changed their minds, not have the cash at the time, might write a check (that might bounce). My customers know that when they recieve the animals if it is not the correct animal or sick/ill they get taken care of (even thought it does not happen from me). If a customer wants to purchase an animal they pay for it, I ship it, they receive it, they are happy with it, and there we go. I for one have worked very hard to establish my reputatiion in the Reptile community so that customers can trust me. If you think you are going to find a dealer that will ship c.o.d. good luck. If you do, be glad as there are almost noen out there that will do so. Also in your post you stated
and as far as opening the packags,i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them
If the carriers are allowing you to open the package before you have paid for it then they and you are breaking their company policies.
Also you state
as far as my name it doe's not have to be here but anyone can go to profiles and i think but not sure that all my info is in there.
That proves that you have no clue to what your talking about. The TOS require that a FULL NAME be posted on your thread on the BOI in order for the thread tonot be deleted. The classifieds do not require it but the BOI does. Maybe you should go read the TOS again and this time read it a little closer and make sure you pay attention and comprehend what it says.

Jim0602,

Actually this thread should belong on the General Discussions and not on the BOI. Below is the rule for name posting. and technically since this should be on the General discussions a name would not be required but it still should be there for coutesy.

ALL messages that are posted either for or against someone else, MUST have a full name to the post and a valid email address. ANY message that does not have both will be considered an anonymous posting and be subject to being deleted with NO warning. Identification is NOT required for someone making an inquiry or posting innocent INFO.

I personally do not classify this as posting innocent info or making an inquiry but that is up to the Webslave.

Yes, this does belong in the general business forum.

as far as I can recall, webslave has said on several ocassions that if a post is neutral (not for or against any one person or business) then a name isnot required. Still, anyone without the guts to back up what they are saying with their name will get no respect from me.

As far as the COD thing. If he wants to be that way fine. Apparently it is working OK for him. If he doesn't want to buy from you then so be it. If you are not comfortable with sending COD then don't.

Let me ask you this annonymous poster.

If you open a package that has been in transit for 24 hours and you find it to be an unacceptable snake. But the day you get it a very cold snap is predicted and temps are expected to go way below zero (it was fine when you got them) What would you do. Would you simply tape the box back up and say "nope don't want it send it back" would you add more heat packs? or do you simply not care at this point? You aren't out any cash so its no skin off your back.

straight from the man as far as i see it.the way i see it i am posting innocent info to try and save some from the thousands of dollars in mistakes i have seen made here in the last couple of months.i am not saying that cod is the way to go but it is an alternative. if you have never heard of a person, smell a rat,to good of a deal to be true, have a bad gut feeling, someone has a badd rep but you still want it or anything along them lines.it is an option.yes i do see where the buyer could be as big a ratt as the bad guys we keep seeing here and that could turn into as bad a problem also.there are alot of people out there that you can find no info on good or bad so this site is not always gonna work.
rob you do have a very good rep that can be traced here and all including myself should have no problem with pre paying for an order from you or someone like you.i am specificaly targeting less than perfect or unknown people.i am also very careing about my animals.that is why i am waiting a month or 2 for my PRE-PAID order from a reputabel dealer from up north before shipping.i also am stating in my adds i will drive great distances to trade but will not ship.
to make everyone happy

Why take the risk, even COD. If these conditions are true then don't buy. There is no reptile in the world that HAS TO BE HAD if you feel unsafe with the person you are dealing with (well, except a legal parsons chameleon :D)

Like Steve said, what happens to the snake that you find isn't the correct shade of coloring when you open the box? Do you accept it (wasting the COD issue) or send it back hoping it gets back alive? (I'm not even sure how the carriers handle returns, would they ship it back overnight or say "we got it there on time" it's ground back to the owner).

I just feel this puts an enormous weight on the seller (buyer's remorse, "I don't have cash right now", I forgot to get a money order" all those little things that can go wrong that have nothing to do with the condition of the animal) that isn't needed.

steve i do get your point..i personaly would still accept under those conditions.my point is the scammers where you are not going to get anything anyways just ripped off.there is 1 out there that keeps poping his ugly little head in all the time under new names.a name that could not be tracked good or bad.he has contacted me also wanting me to ship 1st on a trade.i rarely do.then i found out who he really was and woulda been skrewed.
neil saved a woman i think it was $1300.00 in trade yesterday from this same guy under yet another name.it is so easy to rip someone off in this business and so hard to catch them.here in oklahoma there are places that you can take a check to and cash it with no id of any kind.i could walk in with a check made out to harry potter, they would call the bank to see if your check would clear, the bank says yep so now they call you the seller.ask you is harry potter supposed to be cashing a check from you??yep.i'm paid youre skrewed.you have no idea who i really was.as far as trades same deal.give you an address, give you a name tell you to put hold at p.o. or where ever for pick up.i go in say i'm whoever from wherever to pick up a package from you.in 10 yrs i've been in this business i have been asked 1 time for id.i did not start this against good, wholesum, reputabel dealers and breeders.this is aimed at crooks and scammers that there seem to be so many of at this time.

Jim,

You bring up valid points but as a seller I wouldn't risk it.

How many times have we (as sellers) communicated with a buyer back and forth over a number of days about an animal. To have them go "Found it cheaper somewhere else, thanks but no thanks" (nothing wrong here, just the way internet sales work). I'd have to have one of my chams sitting in a UPS driver's hand at the front door of a customer when he says "Nope, found it cheaper somewhere else last night. Send it back". The cost in Ulcer medication wouldn't cover the one or two extra sales I'd get by offering COD :D

What about

If you see a deal you really want, but your just not sure you trust the seller or buyer or trader, why not contact a third party you both could trust and get that person (probably have to PAY that person because it would have to be someone with an impecable rep so his/her time would probably be expensive) to take delivery from both parties. Examine the goods for both sides, and then ship out to complete the transaction to each party?

Just an idea, I really do think if you don't trust the other guy your probably better off passing on the deal, but if it's a deal you just can't resist, look for third party.

that is also very true.i am also a dealer and know what you are saying.this way defintely has it's dis-advantages also, kids screwing around, idiots wanting to screw with you and make your life miserabel, someone that dosen't like you personaly and wanting to cause problems, the list can go on and on.but there are also times it can work great.i have never had 1 problem so far.i do not sell much cod but it is an option with me.you can't just ship to anybody, you have to search a little but.but as far as purchases nearly 90% of my business is that way.i do not hold it against anyone for not selling to me this way.it is not an option to you and that is fine.i will then decide to either pay up or not get what i wanted.i e-maild for a cod order about 2 months ago, said no,so dropped it.a month later i sent him a money order for the purchase.as far as why take the risk???i will always give someone a second or third or fourth chance at my terms and not theres.hell if not for second or third chances some of the big names on here would been sunk a long time ago from what i read here.like i have said this is not in any way aimed at known people just the unknowns.

cheryl i love that idea and have thought many times on it.you know anyone within150 miles of tulsa oklahoma that would do it by chance???it would be great if something like this could be started but it would take so many great people.coulden't be a gobetween that had to re-ship

Now... I do have to say that there are a few people who I've known for awhile who would trust me if I said they'd get paid later... and the reverse is true for anything I might be giving them... But these are more along the lines of personal friends than unknown business contacts.

Those few exceptions aside, I don't know anyone who will accept C.O.D.'s... heck not even Chef Tony with his miracle blades or the Ronco guy for the dehydrator are that dense.

There's only minimal legal responsibility if you tell a buyer that you'll send payment after arrival and then simply... don't... the cost of filing in small claims is more than it's worth to be honest, very few people are going to have the blind trust in you that you seem to be asking for...

Further, just as a bit of a side note, I have a deep and bitter loathing for people who want animals they can't afford (not just want, but actively try to acquire)... I'm far from being rich myself and I make a few purchases here and there, but if someone can't afford the animal to start... can they afford the required supplies? Food? Possible vet visits? Any permits or licenses that might be required? As a private collector or... dealer (?), there should never be a time when you need an animal so badly that you can't just wait a few weeks until you get the cash and then buy it... and no paypal/checking account is no excuse, postal money orders are quick, guaranteed to be paid and easy to obtain.
