"one big rip off out weighs all the other good deals you got"

And one customer shipping back a snake that was well represented, shipped properly, and healthy, causing it to be doubly exposed to the weather conditions, handling, and costing the seller twice the shipping out weighs all the other possibilities to EVER ship COD again!

I understand the idea of the COD benefits for the buyer. However, look at it this way. A bad guy will not ship COD. A good guy would, IF he knew he could trust the buyer. So, by demanding COD, you are only going to buy from good guys, BUT you are only inconveniencing good guys also. Bad guys won't be hindered from their activities one way or the other, but good guys are supposed to wait ten days for their money? IF the buyer decides to keep it in the first place??

I'm sorry, but I won't ship COD, so I suppose you'll not be buying from me anytime soon. I do live in Springfield, MO, though (about 180 miles from Tulsa), so if there is anyway I can be of service to you in your other purchases, let me know!

Guys, when it comes down to it, this is a hobby driven by the sellers, not the buyers.

We breed these animals out of a love for them, and sometimes it is quite upsetting to even part with one animal that you hatched. When this is the case, it is the seller who does his best to place his animals in responsible care.

For me, someone asking to buy an animal COD does not instill me with confidence in the sale. I am not selling a product that if one breaks you can just replace it with the next one off the assembly line. Each sale is unique and the buyer should know full well that he is purchasing something that is represented to the best of the ability of the seller, but like anything living is subject to changes and "imperfections"

The reason there are more complaints about sellers than customers is because bad customers are the norm! Sellers are realistic when someone is looking at their products. Ever work in retail? The majority of the customers would sooner use the shelves as trashcans than buy something!

Sure, there are crooks in all walks of life. Trying to outsmart them by making things difficult for the rest of us is not the answer.

COD -- does not necessarrily mean Cash on delivery. UPS takes checks....so does usps. What does this mean?

Why I would never do COD-

this means I send you perfect animals.....then you pay with a bouncing check.
That is why I do not do COD.

I could also ship you animals.....then you get buyers remorse and refuse the packages. then I have to pay shipping twice...no thanks.

the only way I would send now and receive money later is from friends.

You say if we don't do COD it throws red flags up?
Name me a couple breeders who do COD.

I sure don't.

I have lost a sale because I do not do COD. (that is what some pet store told me). I told him he lost a supllier.

This is my hobby. Customers do not tell me what methods of payment I accept.. Even if it was a business....customers still won't tell me what payments I accept. I have something you want. NOT vice versa.
If it was Vice versa.....try it on a "big breeder" tell him what and how and where to accept payment. ....tell him how to do business...lets see how far it gets you.

It is a good idea when dealing with unknown sellers. Though it does put the seller at risk, somebody is always at risk, and if they need the money they will do it. But if you can't inspect it before paying for it, it really does not help, could be a box of phone books. I personally try not to buy from unknown sellers, but i have before and will again, sometimes i got to have it, and so far i have not been ripped off.

with all the rip-offs,cons,thieves,crooks, and idiots that are out and about right now in my opinion other than going and picking it up this is the only safe way to do business at this time.

That's precisely why I don't think shipping COD is such a good idea. Risky for the seller and for the animal alike.

On the payment issue, at least in my town UPS only accepts money orders for CODs no personal checks are accepted.

Best regards,

Just for the record, I do not, and WILL not ship my animals out C.O.D. How many times have you gotten an order that was delayed because of weather or some other reason, to get a phone call a few days later with the customer saying that something came up financially, or they changed their mind, or whatever and they want to cancel the order? It has certainly happened to me. Now suppose this happens when the box is on the way to them. What's going to happen? Yep, they will refuse delivery, and the box has to come back to you.

Sorry, but I will lose a whole lot less sleep over losing a sale than I would going through that kind of a hassle. I just can't imagine what could ever be considered an *emergency* order of corn snakes, so certainly the customer can get the funds to me first before shipment will take place.

Oh, one more thing.

When shipping C.O.D., I believe most carriers will not allow you to open the box before they receive your payment. And once you pay for it, the box is yours. They will not get involved over what the contents of the box is, they just take them money and hand you the box.

At best, the driver might be a witness about what was in the box.

Years ago, I had a camera lens sent to me C.O.D. via UPS. Now when I got the box, there COULD be a camera lens in there, or it could just be a brick. That was back when UPS still accepted cash for C.O.D. shipments, so I paid the driver in small bills. While he was counting the money, I opened the box, just so I could have him witness the contents if there was a problem.

So is C.O.D. really any protection at all?

Unreal..Is this a joke?

You say if we don't do COD it throws red flags up?
Name me a couple breeders who do COD.

Yup, good idea, because I do not know of ONE.

Why would anybody risk the stress on an animal alone. Plus the 80 other reasons why NOBODY would sell COD.

and as far as opening the packags,i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them

In the last year I have spent an unimaginable amount of money on ebay for high-end home theatre equiptment, and I tried to open boxes on 2 occasions that were COD, am the UPS driver would not allow this. IT IS AGAINST THE POLICIES OF EVERY SHIPPER as far I am aware.

P.S. Will you send me a pricelist, as I dont know you, but would like you to ship some animals to me COD in WI

LIVE ANIMALS SHOULD NEVER BE SENT COD!!!

I agree that dry goods could be a good idea for COD, but NEVER LIVE ANIMALS!!!!!!!
Frist you don't know if the buyer is for real. He could tell you he wants this and that. You could agree to send the animals COD, but...............
What if this person is just messing with you mind. What if he gave you a FAKE ADDRESS to send the animals too?????? Anyone that cares about their animals, and that's most of the people selling animals, look out for their animals well being first. I can't and never will send animals COD. It's just not right.
That's my opinion and I will stand by it!!!!!!!!!!!!

C.O.D. is not very safe in my opinion!

When we first started shipping wholesale orders I sent out 2 orders totaling $1500.00 out c.o.d.. Well the person who received the order wrote out a check no problems, he even called to say the animals arrived in great shape.
To make a long story short the check bounced and I was stuck with a $1500.00 bad taste in my mouth.
Not to mention I paid for the freight and added it to the total so it was more like $1600.00.

We will never ship c.o.d. EVER!
It doesn't protect the shipper or the animals.
My opinion.

as i had stated in the first posts this will not work with everyone...
all i have said is it is an option with questionabel people that have something you want..as i said people cold screw you around so you would have to screen them also. AL if you will look-nowhere on my list doe's it say UPS so i could care less about your experiences with ups and your stereo equipment.we are not talking stereo equipment here..also i belive it was you i talked to about the ball pythons but could not ship at this time.if you really are interested in buying something i have no prob with sending you a price list.and no problem with cod from you,and no problem with you opening the package and inspecting them before you pay.and if there not what you ordered, not the quality stated, not what you wanted then in no way are you obligated to accept them.as far as shipping back if someone was un-happy i , personaly do not ship till nice weather so the cold would not be a factor.
and rich no where on here have i read anything about an *emergency* order ???did i miss that ???as i have said a hundred times now this is only for the deals you would want to do with the questionabel people like from nigeria or hot springs ark. that you find here and elsewhere.i have not dogged anyone for not shipping cod.if it's not a option with you then it's not.if i still wanted your product i would send pmnt.and hope.but if you are a well know person i have no problem with paying up.

"i have said a hundred times now this is only for the deals you would want to do with the questionabel people like from nigeria or hot springs ark."

Yep, non-existant people in countries currently undergoing military coups, and hillbillies. You can't trust any of them!!!

What is THAT all about???

Jim, no need to get all huffy just because no one here agrees with you on this. You don't want to buy from me because I'm

a) not a big enough name

and/or

b) not willing to ship animals COD

that's fine. There's no reason to cast regional dispersions or to insinuate that those who disagree with you are less than honest in their dealings.

I know for a fact that there are some GREAT herpers in Arkansas, and there are some TERRIFIC places to go herping there too!

i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them .
Now that is either a lie or a total stretch of the truth. Can you name a couple of these herpers that sold to you COD? You should be able to name a lot....that is 1-3 a week. I will give you a break and let you name only one (1) weeks worth.

and never accept personal checks
It is COD !remember??!! We are NOT able to refuse the bouncing check as we are not at the delivery. Hello?

as i have said a hundred times now this is only for the deals you would want to do with the questionabel people like from nigeria or hot springs ark
So yo do 1-3 deals a week with people from Nigeria and hot springs Arkansas?

darin the first words outta my fingers this am was that no one would agree with me......
and i did not say arkansas i said hot springs.i took direct aim at dan little.i have many suppliers from arkansas on birds and have met a few herpers so i have no problems with arkansas.as far as nigeria it was aimed at the i think it was ronky or something like that.i guess i should been more specific there but as much talk as there has been about them lately i figured all would know what i was talking about.i do apologize if i offended you or others with the exception of these 2 people..as far as ordering from you--you are a known name i would have no problems ordering from you.paid up front.there are alot of great people here with great reps, there are good people here with good and badd raps, then there are dirt baggs here with bad reps that do on occasion have an animal that someone may want.if i wanted to order from dan little but insisted it be c.o.d. i do not see where the problem is.i get it,i look at it,if it's what i was told and not a box of books i pay for it,where all happy.he's still a scumbag but i'm happy with my c.o.d order that arrived.

It seems that the one thing you don't seem to understand is COD was designed for people who didn't trust the seller.... they are afraid that if they send them money, they won't receive any merchandise....

IF YOU KNOW THE PERSON.... there should be NO REASON to ship COD???.... Heck, if you know the person, just ship them the animal and they can stick a check in the mail.... so, that logic is totally absurd!!

....Neil

neil this really amazes me..you just agreed with everything i have said this whole thread..
rich i have never said herpers that i can recall i said 90% of my orders came in cod.all of my suppliers are strict m.o. as am i .and i am not the 1 dealing with nigeria nor hot springs..these are just a couple of the problems that have been on the boi the last couple of weeks.i will p.m. you a list of my suppliers as i do not feel they need to brought up here..

as i had stated in the first posts this will not work with everyone...

Jim,

I absolutely agree with that statement of yours. Shipping C.O.D. will only work with honest shippers. But if they are going to ship you any ways because they are honest, why do you need C.O.D.? Now the shipper in turn is completely at the mercy of a buyer that might change his mind at the last minute (maybe even for a valid reason, "stuff" happens!).

Regards.

The one thing I can't understand is how you are able to open the packages before you pay. We have had shipments come into my work (animals and dry good) COD and we have to pay the man before we allowed to TOUCH the boxes. So how is it you are able to open the boxes before you pay the man.

Jim,

You stated
i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them .
I have received quite a few Delta Dash shipments and a TON of UPS, Airborne, and USPS shipments and NOT ONE TIME have any of them allowed the box to be opened before it is paid for. AS a matter of fact their policies it to not even allow the customer to handle the box until it is paid for in full. I think either you are mistaken or for some reason they (as well as UPS, Airborne, & USPS) just break their own rules specifically for you.
