In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

ok on opening the packages..this is allowed only because the 2 shipping options that i use are very good friends that if ever find out i made this public will probabaly not be any longer.yes it is against policy but i am certain i am not the only person on earth that can or hasbent policies.alvaro i stated dis-honest shippers.the honest good guys are great.and yes the shipper is at the mercy of the buyer.but on the other hand the buyer is at the mercy of the seller the normal very acceptabel way.

Jim,

When I first read your post, I had not yet read the thread about Dan Little, so i was unaware of his location. Further, you didn't say who you were talking about in this thread. Sooooo . . .

I thought you were just taking a stereotypical potshot at people from this region (all dumb hicks out to make a quick dishonest buck, etc.). I completely understand what you were saying now, though.

I appologize for the misunderstanding. There are no hard feelings here, and I hope the same is true for you.

i could care less about your experiences with ups and your stereo equipment

I just stated that because UPS ships 95% of my packages. incoming and outgoing

i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them .
Im sorry, I took the "it dosen't matter i open them ." part as you were saying all shippers allow you to open boxes before payment.

A much more logical approach when dealing with an unknown seller without a well known reputation is to take the following two steps.

1.) Do a search on the BOI. That is always the easiest first step in getting a feel for the sellers character

2.) If there is no info on the BOI, ask for three references. If they are legitamate sellers (small or big time doesn't matter), they should be able to give you the Email addresses or phone numbers of a couple of satisfied customers.

If they refuse (I have had that happen) or are unable to comply because they simply do not have any satisfied custiomers, you need to then make the decision to take a chance or keep on walking. The other problem is that is they are that new and/or inexperienced, who knows if they have the slightrest clue as to packaging and shipping protocol.

Personally, if a jobber can't supply references, I keep walking. I am sure I have missed a few great deals but I have also never been stung.

Jumping in the fire...

Well, here it goes...I briefly read through this thread, there has been very good points and counter points made by most of the parties involved, however there was one that struck a nerve w/ me. No names, but i have to say jim0602, you're not going to miss out on anything never being someone's "customer" I know quite a few breeders (propagators of superior quality reptiles they personally produced, not wholesalers of WC animals) willing to ship $1,000 orders COD and all of them I'm assuming, are on a much larger scale than most of us here, that's why they're not at the BOI every 15 minutes posting nonsense. Now please don't all the "real" good guys come crashing down on me, you know who you are, and I respect almost ALL of you here at the board, by your words and thoughts alone, even if I've never done business with you. Words and opinions can be powerful, thought provoking, and inspiring, and most of you have given me a "breath of fresh air" so to speak with your comments, ideas, and helpful information, again you should know who you are. However, there is one that has rubbed me the wrong way for the last time (with their words) PLUS the pictures of their "available animals" say it all. Poor husbandry (feces, less than desirable substrates, obvious bad sheds, BS prices I mean the list goes on and on and on) but still people buy it!! To everyone out there...whatever you need, whenever you need it, email me, I'll refer you to 2 (TWO) names of world reknown propagators, that will ship COD and back-up their animals 110% and I guarantee there stuff to be 200 times nicer than anything you've ever seen available from "the guy that ticked me off" and it should cost you roughly half. "He's" not the only one here at the BOI who can rant-n-rave everytime something rubs him the wrong way, LOL!!!BOI, let me introduce myself...I'm Troy Cromwell

WHATTTTT?????????????? What kind of QUESTION is that?????? I HATE YOU!!!!!! You'll NEVER BUY ANY OF MY ANIMALS!!!!!!! Not at that LOW of a price, in those conditions!!!!!! Are you INSANE????? Go buy one from somebody else, they're STUPID if they sell it to you!!!!! Oh yeah, what's up with the NO FULL NAME thing????? Are you really THAT DUMB??????

Um, OK...ignoring the inflamatory statements...

Well, I will clarify one thing. Yes, there are some very "big" dealers that will do LARGE orders on COD, but this is typically wholesale done for repeat clients that are also dealers. Or importers that supply dealers. Not a retail customer buying one or two animals.

Troy,

If you don't give us a hint it would be very difficult to determine who wrote that.

But I would break down that message in two:

WHATTTTT?????????????? What kind of QUESTION is that?????? I HATE YOU!!!!!! You'll NEVER BUY ANY OF MY ANIMALS!!!!!!! Not at that LOW of a price, in those conditions!!!!!! Are you INSANE????? Go buy one from somebody else, they're STUPID if they sell it to you!!!!!

This first part was meant to be ironic and funny. Meaning they will probably flood you with nice looking ball pythons at that price.

Oh yeah, what's up with the NO FULL NAME thing????? Are you really THAT DUMB??????

The second part though should be considered "private messaging abuse" as well as unnecessary name calling ("dumb"). Besides the rules of this site clearly states posting the name is not required when making an innocent inquiry.

Best regards.

What about this thought???????

Jim you said, "ok on opening the packages..this is allowed only because the 2 shipping options that i use are very good friends that if ever find out i made this public will probabaly not be any longer.yes it is against policy but i am certain i am not the only person on earth that can or hasbent policies."

That makes be think, "OK, it's not allowed, but these guys are your friends and they let you do it". Is that correct???

Now your "friends" are letting you open packages you haven't paid for and remember this is a COD package. It's against the shippers policy and may even be against the law. So my question is........ What's stopping you from taking this one step further and taking what you want out of the box, sealing it up, and sending it back? It's against policy for it to be opened "before" it's paid for, but you still open them. If the person who sent you snakes gets and package back says, "HEY, they opened the box and took some snakes out". Do you think the company, UPS or whatever, is going to "believe them?? Afterall the packages "aren't supposed to be opened before they're paid for!!!!!!" So what's your shipping companies you use again?????? I don't think you mentioned their names.

Let's see now, you propose to only buy animals COD as a form of buyer protection. For the protection to work however, you have to happen to be good buddies with the delivery guy so ho let's you break the rules and open the package before paying.
That alone negates the "protection" for virtually everyone.

and as far as opening the packags,i get 1-3 in per week and open every one of them.delta, usps, airborne,it dosen't matter i open them

i do not sell much cod but it is an option with me.you can't just ship to anybody, you have to search a little but.but as far as purchases nearly 90% of my business is that way.

Based on these statements, you are apparently buying animals COD on a weekly basis, and have received these shipments via at least 3 carriers. Are we to believe you are such good friends with the Delta counter workers, the postal employees, and the Airborne driver, that they all let you break the rules and open the packages before paying for them? Are we also to believe that you are finding it so easy to locate people willing to ship COD that you can do so on a weekly basis?
As for the seller researching the buyer, that's simply rediculous, but I suppose that goes nicely with the entire idea presented here.
There is absolutely no reason why a shipper should assume that level of risk, or be required to investigate the purchaser before selling to him. That's why payment is made before the animals are sent.

You keep stressing the fact that this is not to be applied to known breeders. The definition of known is highly subjective. I'm known to some, but unknown to many. I've personally talked to snake keepers who have never heard of Dave and Tracy Barker, so they are unknown to them.
The point is, it is the buyers responsibility to research the seller, and if he is not comfortable with purchasing from that person, then keep your money. Buying COD is not an alternative to confidence in your supplier.
I completely agree with what has been stated repeatedly in this thread, only a trust worthy shipper would consider COD to begin with, a scammer will refuse. Very few of even the trustworthy shippers will bother with COD, but there is no way a scammer would do it. So what is the practice benefitting other than to increase the trouble for the good guys.

I never agree to COD shipping, and in fact the requests for it have been few. I don't need to sell my offspring so badly that the added agravation caused by COD would be worth it not to lose the one or two sales I refuse per year.

after scanning through this post all i can say is WOW!,FAR-OUT,WHATEVER,i know we wont due c.o.d. because of the headache involved & frankly wouldnt ever need a sale that bad,and if we are to loose a sale because of not shipping c.o.d. so be it !!! it really does place the seller at a greater risk,,IMHO,thus our reason for NOT doing it,,,good luck :D ,,,,, thomas davis T&S reptile farm

1-3 packages he gets a week.

That is anywhere from 52 - 156 packages a year.
and still can't name a couple of people that sent him COD

guess thats another point...but you also sent back to me that you had received it.

COD

I can't believe this thread has gone on as long as it has, and why the name calling? A person was only shareing his new policy. And it was given as a suggestion. Take it or leave it, that's all.

I don't believe this is what BOI is suppose to be!!!

:)

ritch i sent you a pm as soon as you asked for it with a detailed list ???
Oh the pm where you asked why you got a warning.......I don't think that is a list.

guess thats another point...but you also sent back to me that you had received it.
that is a nother thing....the only thing i remember sending you is something that says I have no clue why you got a warning.

I am ritchie...maybe you got me confused with someone else.
