In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Back in early March, the user "herpterra" on this forum, Mr. Jennings Daniel, was offering a LTC female whitelip python for $225 shipped. I pounced on the ad, after doing a basic check- he only had two posts about him here, but both were positive. He removed the ad shortly after he sold the snake.
I contacted him on my previous screen-name here, "fuzzworm." (I have since changed as I didn't use my legal name on that account, durr.)
I wanted to set up a payment plan for the snake, which the terms of sale on his website stated was fine. He agreed readily to a payment plan. I made an initial payment on March 5th.

I paid off the remaining balance on March 14th, and we arranged for the arrival date of my new snake. I was anxious about the exact date of arrival, as I work odd hours, and I wanted to be sure she'd arrive on one of my days off so that I'd be home in the morning to receive the package (this was to be my first "mail order" herp). It was to arrive on March 24th.
That morning, I waited, and waited ... and waited ... after 12 pm, and still no package, I sent him a slightly panicky e-mail. I got a response that evening:
"I am so sorry I shipped the snake to the wrong address and the person that got it call me, I am super super sorry this is all my fault I had so many things to ship out monday and made a mistake, I will be getting the snake back in tomorrow and I will check it out and make sure it is alright, I cant believe I did this. If there is anything i can do to make up for it let me know I am sorry"

This was a pretty big red flag I ignored, and I really regret it...
I was willing to forgive him; people make mistakes (though that is an awfully big mistake), and I still wanted the animal, but I was upset by what had happened. I asked for some reimbursement for my trouble, and J. Daniel agreed to send me an extra pair of leopard geckos, along with the snake, when he re-sent her out.
He said the snake was cold, but seemed otherwise all right, when he got it back, and stated he wanted to keep the snake for a few days before re-sending her, to make sure she was okay. I said that was fine, and asked if he thought a March 31st delivery might be okay.
He never responded to this question, so I assumed it was okay.

March 30th - due to the mistake the first time - I e-mailed him again and asked for a tracking number on the package. He responded that evening to let me know he was out of heat packs and couldn't send her that day.

March 31st, I get this:
"Hello,
I have some bad news the white lip that you order was doing fine when I got her but died last night.I think it is because of to much shipping stress. Now by saying that we can do two things. We can refund you the full amount or we can send a different one.I have 2 in quartine right now they will be done in 12 days.I am sorry for this but I am trying to make it right. If you get one of the other white lips you will still recieve the 2 leopard geckos as well.PLease let me know what you would like to do.Again I am sorry and WILL make it right.

J.Daniel"

At this time, my hard drive took a nosedive, and I had to have someone else reformat it for me. I got it back on April 8th.
I was a little disconcerted that J. Daniel had not attempted to contact me in the week I was 'missing,' but I shrugged it off. I finally responded to him, and stated I would prefer a full refund at this point.

I received no response for several days. During this time, I noted he had logged into his account here on FaunaClassifieds. April 13th, I sent him a PM here and another e-mail, stating that I felt I was being ignored and/or avoided, and I would like to at least know the status of my refund.
I filed a dispute against him with PayPal in an attempt to get my money back.

April 15th he responded, stating a family member of his had passed away, and that it was his fiance that was checking Fauna, not him. He said he'd refund me immediately.

April 21st, I received notice from PayPal that his payment had failed to clear. (Insufficient funds?!) He assured me he'd fix this ASAP.

April 28th, PayPal closed the dispute in my favour, and attempted to force a refund through his account. The refund again failed, due to insufficient funds in J. Daniel's account.

April 30th, I contacted him again to ask if he'd cleared the funds in his bank yet, or perhaps if he'd prefer to mail me a money order or cashier's check. No response.

May 6th, out of idiot desperation for some sort of reimbursement, I emailed asking if it'd be easier for him to just send me some animals after all.
Surprise, surprise - I received a response within 24 hours; in the e-mail it was claimed to be his fiance/wife "M. Daniel" responding to me. She apologized as J. Daniel had apparently suffered another death in the family and was out of town. She claimed she was unaware of the situation between J. Daniel and I, but she would be willing to work with me to settle this problem and send me something.
I explained the situation to her, and that I just wanted some kind of reimbursement - that I would prefer my money back, but if that was impossible, I'd be willing to accept animals of equivalent value.

May 9th, "M. Daniel" offered me:
"Ok I did some research and I can do 3 things.

1. I can find you a white lip through my resources and send that with a pair of savannah montiors ( we had some problems with the ones we have and are still under watch )

2. I can send you something else that equals to $250 ( if there is anything else you are looking for )

3. I can refund you the total amount

Please let me know what you would like for me to do.We have NEVER had problems before and like I said im not sure of what went wrong. My husband was so busy I guess he lost track of what he was doing. And for this I am truely sorry, but this will be fixed no matter what."

To which I said:
"I was really interested in, mostly, a Whitelip (good to hear you are still watching the two you have)-
I'd prefer to just have the total amount refunded, please. If Paypal works, my paypal is the same as this email; [email protected]
If a money order would be preferable, I am willing to take that too.

I'm glad to hear this might finally be taken care of.

-Meg aka fuzzworm"

I have not had any contact from J. Daniel or any possible affiliates thereof since May 9th. The last date I attempted to contact him was May 23.
During this entire ordeal, I have done my best to remain as civil and polite as possible, though this has been ... a pretty :censored: frustrating situation. I doubt I'm ever going to see a cent of that money again, and I feel thoroughly cheated and quite furious ... I live in Las Vegas ... if I wanted to throw away $225, I could have gone to a casino, at least I'd get free cocktails...

In short, I can't help but feel J. Daniel is a scammer. And that's $225 I could have spent much better at a local shop on a real, live snake.
If anyone wants more documentation, I'd be delighted to provide screenshots of any/all PMs, e-mails and PayPal receipts.

I've met Mr. Daniels in person, and I've been to his house and he is also a member of my forum. I think he should be responding to such message, and it's not good businessman ship to not refund, and IMO, you shouldn't spend your funds before the person is satisfied with the animals AFTER recieving such. Do you have his contact phone number. That might help if you have tried to contact him by phone. I know that Paypal, does not look lightly on refunded transactions, and obviously did so in your favor. I'm giving my professional opinion, not my personal one, please do not get those mixed up. I'm suprized no one else has responded to this issue, and do you have copies you could possibly post with your personal info blotted out at the amounts you sent and the refund attempts from paypal? Might help in placing your case.

That would be good. Please do. Just for further info, here's his website:
NOTE: the phone number posted on his site has changed.

Here's is his "herp society" forum. He and his wife (that would be the "M. Daniel" - user mlsslayla there) are both founders/admins.
http:/www.middletnherp.lefora.com
Per a post there on June 9th, his new number:
http://middletnherp.lefora.com/2009/06/09/new-number/page1/
"Anyone that wants to get ahold of me call my new number I apologize for the inconvienience but I am back in the circle lol 615 750 3726".

April 15th he responded, stating a family member of his had passed away, and that it was his fiance that was checking Fauna, not him. He said he'd refund me immediately.
Hmm, that seems to conflict with a camping/herp trip he and his fiance/wife/whatever organized and attended that weekend:

Wow, that dude has some really bad luck! However, he was managing to post
his monitors and BP's for sale on May 7th. Not that it proves he wasn't out of town for a family death, of course.

I have not had any contact from J. Daniel or any possible affiliates thereof since May 9th.
Probably because he's been real busy since May organizing and going on herp trips, selling a caiman, organizing a volunteer non-profit snake removal team, and adding more animals to his collection. I'll give it to the guy, he's a busy herper! Again:

Yes, please post your emails, supporting documents, etc. I would like to see you get your refund.

Wow, I am shocked. Back in late February, I purchased a LTC Emerald Tree Boa from J. She arrived healthy and alive, although a bit cool, but it was quite cold outside. She settled in nicely, and I had some trouble getting her to eat at first. I contacted J several times and he was nothing but helpful, calling and emailing me with suggestions and reassurances. Esmeralda the ETB started eating and would eat several prey items every week if I let her (which I don't of course. 3 meals, poop rule!). She is also extremely docile, and has never hissed or attempted to bite. She is healthy and beautiful and I couldn't have asked for a nice ETB. My experience was very positive, and I have only heard good things about J from others. That being said, he did not treat you fairly, and this doesn't look good for him and his reputation at all. Sending a snake to a wrong address is pretty bad, but the worst is not refunding you after all that. Seems like he initially was trying to make it right, but then just...forgot about it, or stopped caring? I wonder if he is aware of this thread.

I sent him a message on my forum last nite after he posted a caiman for sale, telling him he needed to address the Fauna thread involving him. So I'm sure he's aware. As all messages are usually sent to your email in box. Usually. If not he has a message waiting for him.

Kimberly, I personally have not notified him of this thread. I'm not trying to pin a bad guy badge on the guy yet .... from all appearances, he seems to be a decent guy, really interested in herps, but also has a very full plate.

I would like to see Meg get an immediate refund of ALL her money; it's just the right thing to do and it seems like he's had ample time to accomplish that.

Screenshots, part 1.

I've always figured you shouldn't spend funds until a transaction has been satisfactorily completed, too...
Now, really, I could understand if say ... he desperately needed the money for all the travel for his family members that have supposedly passed away. But he wouldn't be able to afford the camping trip, then, yeah? ... :shootfoot

Interesting information, Laura, thank you...
I wonder if I should join that board and send him a message there, myself? He's clearly ignoring my e-mails.

I do have a contact phone number for him, now, though I don't have a phone of my own that I can call long distance on at the moment. I do plan on trying to call him in the next day or three, though.

This is really frustrating, especially given Kimberly's purchase - a month before mine?? Argh!

I took some screenshots, this is going to take a while to compile them all, so I'll post at least a few a day.

Feb. 27th 2009: The initial contact with J. Daniel about the snake (sent from, as mentioned above, my previous Fauna handle of "fuzzworm"):

Mar. 4th 2009: Followup email. This is where the spotty communication started...

Initial Paypal down payment of $48, sent Mar. 5th 09:

Second & final Paypal payment of $178, sent Mar. 18th 09:

I've blurred out his phone number and my address. The refunds on both Paypal accounts are failed refunds (obviously).

I'm sorry to hear about this. It's pretty obvious that you got screwed on this deal. Here is the ad Sonnie was referring to:

http://easttnherps.com/yak/index.php?topic=1012.0

He hasn't logged onto Fauna since April, so it's possible he hasn't seen this thread unless he's just viewed it as a guest....But he obviously has internet and phone service so there's no excuse to be ignoring you.

Thank you, tbone. Nicely done :)

mlsslayla ... that would be the little woman; the one who tells fibs, the one who's covering his butt and an accomplice to theft.

Melissa Davenport according to her profile here, join date 4-17-09 ... the same weekend of the family death/herp trip. Classy.
I wonder if I should join that board and send him a message there, myself? He's clearly ignoring my e-mails
Don't bother. Sonnie said she already told him; obviously his other half has already seen the thread and he is a member here. If they were in any way honest or honorable, they would 1) contact you immediately 2) reimburse every penny and/or 3) post here.

Sorry to hear about your bad situation. I had a similar thing happen to me on a different forum, different person but same excuse. Family member was ill and in the hospital so did not contact me for weeks. After a month I asked for a refund and he agreed. I never got the refund and he stopped all contact. It eats me up inside that someone would take money from another and spend it for their own enjoyment while I slaved at work to make that money!!!!!!:angry::angry::angry::angry:

Hope you get your refund.

Here's the message I sent...him and the time and date.

Hey there is a thread on Fauna you need to address. It's not a good one, and I feel you need to look into it. I responded, say you needed to respond. To keep a good name, be good to the people who feed you.

And here's the last time he logged into my forum. SO it proves he knows about this thread, because hes logged into the system.

I know he had some ball pythons for sale a while back that were questionable. He stated they were pastel and het ghost and these were not. When told they weren't, he lowered the price and changed some of the wording on his Craigslist ads. I really don't know that I would do much business with this guy.

I went to his "good guy certification" forum and saw that his website is offline.

DO NOT GO THERE---IT'S ALL POP-UPS NOW.

He'll have the certificate revoked if someone lets Rich know about his site.

Wow- that is really odd. Wonder why the website went down, unless he is in hiding. He should have the good guy certificate revoked unless he quickly settles this issue.

Yeah, I remember reading that thread, Ed. I'd not made the connection between that thread and this one. I also remember drawing my own conclusions back then, mainly that he was a poor liar and not terribly bright. Now we can add scammer and thief.

The funny thing about thieves is that they like to brag. The dates that he posted his new additions is in the actual URL on the capture ... just a week ago.
What a :censored:

I don't know about this guy! I am glad someone brought this here, so we can all learn about him!
