    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Got a letter from the electric company that my power will be out for six hours on June 21st.

I've got one clutch in the incubator now. Has anybody had a similar loss in power while incubating? I really don't know how well my incubator will retain temps, or what an acceptable loss in temps for six hours would be.


Any insight would be appreciated....

Luckily temp loss isn't nearly as troublesome as temp spikes, with that being said you still want to keep it as close as possible. I would advise that you get hot hand's heat packs or regular 40 hour heat packs (for shipping). If you only have the one clutch to worry about you can use those to put under and around the tub to keep temp up. Boil up some water and refill those bottles with that before it cuts out if you have an exact time.

You have the thermostat there to let you know what the temp inside the tub are like so don't open the door if you can help it and keep an eye on them. Luck is also on you side because it is summer and for only 6 hours.

They should be just fine. Take the little steps you can to try and help them through the 6 hours and you should be just fine.

It's nice of them to let you know, we do not get any warnings, even for scheduled outages.

You can add some more water bottles in there but probably isn't going to be a big deal. I recently lost power for a few hours while they trimmed trees and lost a degree per hour.
 
You're in a warm climate, so you should be okay. You may want to invest in a battery backup though. You can get a relatively inexpensive one for about $100, and that will give your incubator about 1-2 hours of additional juice depending upon your heat source, number of fans, and how well insulated your incubator is.

I bought this battery backup for my Nature's Spirit incubator. With an outside temperature of 65F (my basement is kind of cool), I got about an hour's worth of power out of it. I like it because it has a mute button, most battery backups beep incessantly when they're using battery power. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101381

You could also wrap your incubator in a heavy blanket during the power outage for some added insulation.
 
Hey Jack, you will be fine down here. As they said just add a few more water bottles and cover the front of it with a blanket to help keep the heat in
 
Happened to me in the middle of a hatch season. 2 separate incubators, one full, one partially....and no power for 7 or 8 hours. Incubator inside temp got down to 75F, but I'm sure the tubs stayed much warmer....didn't have thermometer in them. Still had a 100% hatch rate.
 
I will say I agree with Robert. I had a power outage here before I got my battery backup and when the power came back on, the thermostat probe was only reading 75F. I think the inside of the tubs were warmer though. I have also had a 100% hatch rate.

That said, the sheer panic I felt made me buy that battery backup the very same day. x_x
 
They should be fine since it's not that long. It's always a good idea to have a backup power source though. I learned that after hurricane sandy, everyone said it wouldn't be that bad and we never lost power before but after it hit we had no power for over 3 weeks. Only room in the house that was warm was the snakes room lol, they had their own personal generator.
