I plan on producing some possible het ball pythons in the next few years. From what I have been reading, it seems like new breeders are having a hard time selling possible hets. I just wanted to get everyones opinion on what should be done when a new breeder wants to sell possible hets. Does having references from the breeder that you purchased the 100% hets from help? I will gladly price them as CBB normals to earn a good reputation (two years later if something proves out...ha). Is that what it is going to take or are there another way?

Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel,

Having paperwork from a reputable producer of hets may help, but frankly, 50% hets are a crap shoot at best and really not worth much more than normals anyway. When and if some of them prove out down the road then that will buy you some credibility. But again, if someone buys 1.1 or even 1.2 50% hets from you there is a good chance that they will never prove out.

Thanks Jim. I was thinking along those lines. I will most likely just sell them as CBB normals. ha ha... it would make my day to see the smile on someone face if they ''win the lottery'' and produce some homozygous bps from some possible hets that they bought for the price of normals :)

When selling possible hets as normals, should you advertise them as possible hets or just advertise them as normals and tell the buyer that it is possible het after the purchase?

Honesty up front, before the purchase, is ALWAYS the best bet. It can't hurt to say that they are 50% hets....as long as the price is fair, and the person clearly understands what 50% het means. You'd be surprised the people who don't....I read an article in Reptiles magazine not too long ago...guy wrote in asking about hets....he figured if he bred his 50% hets together, he'd come up with 75% het babies, and by breeding those, he'd have 100% hets....and so on, LOL. Just make sure the people have an honest understanding of what they are getting.

just price them as normals and sell them a possable het. if the person ask tell them that its a possable het for...

If you are inclined I'd also bother to make up paper work (preferably with an individual picture) explaining the parentage and possible genetics of the animals. It's a little work for something selling at normal or near normal price but it helps with the confusion factor. I've had people try to re-sell my possible hets as for sure hets and I honestly think some of them just didn't understand the concept so maybe if I'd explained it on paper they would have got it or at least their potential buyers would have. Also I think the paperwork will help to build and protect your rep even if they are only possible hets.

Depending on how much you want to grow your collection you may just want to keep all the possible het females anyway and only sell the males at normal price. I do think it's best to tell them that they are possible hets though.

possible het females are worth deceint mont the males are worthless. But someone can breed (for instants) an Albino male to 4 - 50% hets. and some of them are going to hit and the others are still 100% hets and still allot cheeper than buying all 100% hets for those of use on a budget
