In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

#1 My Dumpy frog has been craoking at night. Does that mean its a boy? How do you tell the sexes apart?

#2 My Dumpy's cage stinks...I clean it once a week, and spot clean it within that week...I am using the reptibark as the bottom. Is there something else better I can use that won't smell my room up?

#3 My green tree frog is skinny. I have only seen it eat once in about 2 months...but it hops and gets in the water everyday. I put crickets in the cage about 3 times a week, and the Dumpy seems to gobble them up, but I have never seen the tree frog eat.

Ok I think that's all for now. Let me know if you have any help for me. THANKS !!

Usually... female whites will vocalize once in a great while if they're handled roughly but generally do not call. Constant calling is a fair indicator of a male... nuptual pads and discoloration of the throat are additional indicators but are not always obvious.

Wet reptibark + amphibian feces = stench. Clean more frequently and consider switching to orchid litter or any of the soil consistancy substrates.

I'm not even sure I should dignify this with a reply but... Let's look at that situation... different species literally from opposite sides of the planet and with totally different care and environmental requirements housed communally... one is notorious as being an agressive feeder... The one which is not exhibiting agressive feeding behaviors is losing weight... You can't draw any obvious conclusions from this yourself? I'd suggest giving both (and any other) animals to someone who KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING and that can afford to house them as they need to be housed.

hmmmm

thanks for info on the first 2 questions, but you didn't have to be rude on the third one. I know what I am doing, and they housed them that way when i bought them. Wow you have made me feel like the crappiest person alive, and I guess you enjoy doing that. Thanks a lot! All I was doing was asking questions...you rude rude person.

Hayley, my guess is you did little to no research on the frogs you have. It's common but still not good.

Seamus is right in that it should have been obvious as to why your green treefrog was not eating. However, you've probably never had frogs before and as I stated above I bet you did little research on them before buying them and taking them home.

Petshops, by and large, are just in it for the money. They frequently house animals together that SHOULD NOT be kept together. They routinely(?) do not house the animals in their care properly.

Some folks here, such as Seamus, have YEARS of experiance, both personal and with petshops, and know how things work. You're a newbie, I am guessing, and as such your innocently asked questions touched a button.

My first thought upon reading your questions was, "what a dip, she didn't KNOW the dumpys would intimidate the green?" Then I figured you just didn't know any better. Hopefully my second thought is the correct one.

You've learned a lesson or two. RESEARCH first, then buy. There are forums here and at other sites where the frogaholics gather. talkto.thefrog.org is one that's pretty good. Go there and do more research to see what else you might need to know.

Seamus is actually one of the most knowledgable guys out there and next time you have questions, provided he's not irritable that day, he's one of the ones to ask.

wes

Thank you wes...and I had no idea other frogs could intimidate others. that seamus guy might be knowledgable, but he could have been nicer to a newbie such as myself. I am going to put my tree frog in his own home, and see how it affects him. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle, right? Thanks you for not making me feel like crap.

Friendly suggestions for ?#3

Do you have a heat source, such as a uv a/b light ? That will aid digestion and increase metabolism, making it fatter and more active. Also I've found that full specturum lights curtail fungus and mold to a degree even in amoist eviroment, and that may help somewhat with the smell, just as long as the bottom doesnt get too hot. (hotspot ~87degrees-mist the cage to in the morning and right before feeding time at night). Zoo Med sells them for 2 for like 14$.

How large is your enclosure? the intimidation thing could bea factor if the cage is to small, but less so with plenty of plants to crawl/hide/bask on.

Also Crickets are only suitable for the largest specimens of a given american hylid. Buy a culture of wingless house flies (wild=disease). Another method is to collect your own. A succesful method is to use a light trap( instructions at bottom of message). However you need to be very careful. I would highly recomend going to a library and getting a field guide on insects so you can recognized toxic bugs in your area. Usually you need to discard beetles, stinkbugs. Suitable insects include spiders, caddisflys, moths, aphids, GREEN treehopers, and grasshoper nymphs/babies. Be careful to not feed anything with milkweed in the name, or ussually brightly colored(red/orange/yellow) insects.
One way to catch is get a fine butterfly net and go out in a feild and sweep it through the grasses.
To make a Light trap:
Take a glass jar and attach a funnel to it ( i just use ducktape) and then place it about 12 inches under a light source at night. To be most effective make sure other lights are off. And remeber to sort out bugs, if you think it may be bad let it go.

unless it is VERY cold where you keep your frogs a heat light is more apt to do damage, ie cood your frogs, than good.

An adult green tree frog is capable of eating large crickets with no problem.

A fluorescent light, full spectrum, cannot hurt but be sure your cage is big enough that the lightbulb or ballast do not overheat your frogs.

hmm

Well, like i saidthe temp has to be checked, to make sure it doesnt get too hot, but it will help with increasing appetite(esp full spectrum). That is true for amlost any herp.

As far as crickets go,I didnt mean giant but I meant fully grown, like over 2" and i assume that is also what you mean by adult-fully grown. Anything under 2" hasa hard timewith crickets. And cant that lead to impaction or imcomplete digestion?

**Sidney,Howlong Is YOur frog?**

Thank you for all your help...I have decided to give the tree frog to someone who raises them, and knows what they are doing. I appreciate everyone's help.

how could you not know???

I don't mean to sound rude but HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW THAT FROGS CAN BE INTIMIDATED BY OTHER FROGS??? I MEAN I'M ONLY 13 YEARS OLD AND I KNOW THAT!!! I HAVE POISON DART FROGSAND EVEN THE SAME SPECIES ARE INTIMIDATING TOWARDS EACH OTHER!!! DUH!

Sorry to be Rude,

stop

Ok people...especially little teenagers who think they know everything. The frog is with someone else. If you would have read this was posted back in October. JEez...does your mommy and daddy know you were playing on the internet? Some of you people are the reason why message boards are taken down. Cause all you do is belittle people...mind your own business unless you your trying to help. And little 13 year old...don't sign your post with don't mean to be rude when you have just written a rude response. IT kind of defeats the purpose.
