    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Sexing Questions **Please Help**

I know that you guys have been asked these questions a million times before but please help me out. So I was reading a thread that was discussing sexing issues and everyone was saying that you should always double check your new snakes in case a mistake was made. Well I realized that I have never double checked mine ( I hope that doesn't turn around and bite me in the :censored: ) I have always just taken the breeders word on the matter because I have been afraid of hurting them. I have watched videos and read about how to do it but I have a few questions that I have not really found the answers to.

(1) What is the most reliable method popping or probing?
(2) Is there a certain size that they are to big to pop?
(3) How do I know what size probe to use? I have the 8 pc. probe set that Reptile Basics sells.

I need to go through all of my snakes and make sure they are what they're supposed to be. I have snakes ranging from 100 grams to 1500 grams. I plan on breeding so I know I need to learn this, so if anyone could offer me some insight on the matter I would really appreciate it.
 
I prefer to see the sex organs, we pop everything we sell and pop them multiple times before they leave our hands.
I have seen too many issues with probing correctly so to me a visual of the sex organs is the only thing I will trust 100%.

Practice, practice and practice some more, but not on the same snake too much :D
I find 250 to 750 gram snakes the easiest to pop but once you get it down you can pop any size snake.
 
What this guy said, although if you have a 1500+ g snake that doesn't wanna cooperate then it can be a challenge. I'd say the best to learn on is about 2-400 g, they are big enough that you aren't s afraid to hurt them and small enough that it's alittle easier.
 
Yep I always pop and I've popped everything from hatchlings to adults. I just popped my leopard male last night to see if he was producing sperm plugs and he's 1000grams. He is producing but not very interested in breeding since the black pastel female was wagging away and he stayed curled up in the corner lol. But yes you can pop any size but the bigger ones can sometimes be more of a task.
 
I'm terrified of trying to pop my first snake. I have been putting off learning... I need to find someone in my area willing to show me how.
 
I pop all of mine...its easy once you try a few times, although like everyone says, big uncooperative females can be a little more difficult.
 
Why can't these guys just be sexually dimorphic?! Grrrrrrr.

Somewhat related note: I had an anthropology test in collage that asked: "Are humans sexually dimorphic?" and I answered 'yes' and she marked it wrong. I questioned her on this saying that if she presented me with a pair of naked humans that I could tell you which one was male and which one was female 99.9% of the time.

She responded that it didn't matter because sometimes women are taller than men. To which I responded "Uh...what?". Her definition of sexually dimorphic was that the adult male of the species was always larger.

I was so glad to be paying 15,000$ a year to learn my teachers own personal definitions of words.
 
I would have more mistakes probing than I would popping, I even pop adults and haven't ever had a problem doing it. I mean sometimes adults can get squirley but so can babies trying to get away while your trying to pop them lol.

I have a probe kit but I prefer to pop my snakes - from hatchlings to adults. Once you get the hang of it, it's really simple and I feel much more comfortable popping than probing.
 
Well I have been in the snake room attempting to learn but I think all I have learned how to do is piss some snakes off.......... this is gonna take some practice. I tried to pop just about all of them and couldn't get a single male to pop.
