    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hey there folks, I need some help.

For some reason over the last few months my female has been having a rough time shedding. Pretty much everytime now I have to soak her to help her get through it. For example, she started looking pale 3 days ago, and this morning she hasn't even started to shed yet. If left to her own devices, she'll end up tearing apart her cage for a couple of nights trying to rub off the skin.

She has never had previous problems with shedding, so I don't understand what's going on. My male starts to look pale in the evening, and is done shedding by morning... this is what she used to do also.

She is housed in a 20 G with paper towels. Its 90 - 92 on the hot side. There is one hide and one humid hide on the hot side, one regular hide on the other. She has a calcium dish in her cage.

She eats mealworms and super worms, both are gutloaded with cricket food, multivitamins, rolled oats, etc...

Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

(I adopted her in October, I beleive she is 4 - 6 years old. She was 32 g when I got her, and is now 74 g)
 
im just curious on your humid hide, what kind do u use, what is the substrate in there.

i have one female (about 4 or 5 years old) that has a hard time with her digits (got her missing three toes from Albeys, lost two more under my watch). i noticed she wont even bother with her hide if its too wet.
 
she spends a ton of time in her humid hide, even when she's not shedding... its her favorite place to be.

I use a tupperware container with bed-a-beast in the bottom and wet papertowel on top of it to reduce the mess.
 
dysecdysis could be from high temps as well. You mentioned 90-92, Tremper says 90 some say 88 for the hot side.

I have 2 questions:

1. how hot is the colder side of your 20G?
2. How do you check your temperatures?

If all those factors are ok, try different humid hides. Maybe the hole in your hide is too big and all the humidity is escaping.
 
the humid hide keeps humidity really really well, I know that can't be it because I can see the condensation and feel how moist it is. I don't even have to spray it down all that often because its always so humid.

I'm not sure how cool the cool side is, I can check it tonight. I say 90 - 92 because there is one hot spot on the UTH that runs a little hotter, usually about 2 degrees more than the rest of the hot side.
The rest ranges from 90 - 88 around her humid hide.

I check the temps with a laser temp gun.
 
I doubt the temps are the problem. I find 92 - 93 to be quite ideal for my geckos - good color, activity, feeding. I haven't had any shed problems.
 
Try putting another humid hide on the cool side, or maybe move the other one to the cool side.

It's just a suggestion. When I kept my leos in tanks I always had the humid hides on the cool end. In my rack systems, they are more in the middle. I dunno, what you have doesn't seem to be working with her, so maybe changing things up a bit might help.
 
Sure, but this is an old picture. I made some changes right after I took it, so here they are:

The container in the left corner is now in the middle of the cage, and is her humid hide.
There is another dry hide where it used to be.
The rock is all the way to the right side of the cage.

So there are three hides, one of which is her humid hide.

I'm gonna go with Kelli on this one and say try moving the hides around.

For example, you mentioned moving your humid hide to the middle. Try moving it back to the warmer side and another dry hide on that side and just one hide on the cold side.

Other than that, I would say, keep the hides moist.
 
Well the person that had them before me put the heating pad in a weird place, its actually warmest a just left of the middle of the tank, which is where I've had the humid hide since December. She spends almost all her time in it. So per Kelli's suggestion I moved it closer to the right side... but I feel bad because now she's just laying on the ground where her hide used to be.
