    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I'm brand new to beardies and have a couple of questions about mine shedding. She's started to shed for the first time (I only got her a couple of weeks before Christmas). She was about 4 months old when I got her.

First of all, I've been into boas and other snakes since the early 90's and I'm used to them (usually) shedding in 1 piece. I see that this will obviously NOT be the case with my lizard. She's starting to peel around her mouth and on a toe (all I can see coming loose, thus far).

Should I do anything differently for her while she goes through this process? I've heard someone mention soaking her for about 15 minutes twice a week, but I've heard that this might be bad because she cannot tolerate humidity.

I know there are a lot of MUCH more experienced beardie keepers than myself so please, someone help!! lol

You can soak your dragons regularly. I would do once a week, for about 15 minutes in shoulder height, luke warm water. The issues with the humidity would be for extended periods of time(in the cage), and coupled with improper temps you are asking for respiratory issues. Regular soaking and/or misting can be done. I have talked with people who had dragons that actually drank from a bowl in the cage, but I have never seen this myself, and I do not offer water bowls in my dragon cages.

For shedding.....it seems as dragons get older/bigger, then tend to shed in smaller pieces. Maybe the head today, few days later the torso, legs the next week, etc..

Thanks for your help. I just got her back in her tank and gonna let her get warm and completely dry from her bath before turning her light out. She seemed to like it a lot better than what I expected. I soak some of my snakes from time to time, but usually have to fight with them. She jumped off my hand, found a spot that "suited her" and just chilled for a while. lol

Even in the tub though, I never saw her drink. I did take a small piece of paper towel and use it to dribble water over her. She stuck her tongue out for a drop or two of that, but nothing else.

In a few days, I'll try it again. Hopefully her colors will really start coming out over the next week or so.

Mine shed under his chin first. The other day his head started shedding, then later that day his tail, then this morning his hind legs, and then mid day around his neck, and now tonight his back and sides are shedding. Hes a growing boy =)
 
I would recommend taking her outside in a tall bin to let her soak during warm days. She will be able to get natural UV, warmth, and they really seem to enjoy it. They puff out their ribs and expand their body to get as much heat and UV as possible. Then sometimes they don't seem to want to leave. Most lizards in general have patchy sheds and soaking makes it eaiser to avoid retained sheds. A good thing is you don't have to worry about retained eye caps they bad thing is you have to watch the toes and the tips of tails. I've seen a few that lost the tips from retained sheds.
 
Well, I've now had my original beardie for right at a year (give or take a few weeks), as well as a couple more that I picked up over the Summer, and I thought I had figured them out pretty well by now....'til you mentioned toe and tail nips from retained shed! I thought those only came from siblings fighting over food.

All of my guys are doing great....eating me out of house and home, but doing great!! ;)
