In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

So I purchased a caramel albino from Dixie Serpent Den. Looked pretty thin when he arrived but didn't think to much about it because I figured he had been breeding. Put him in QT and after a couple weeks I noticed he was showing signs of a R.I. He has been open mouth breathing and holding his head up most of the time. Was told he wasn't shipped with one but could stress during shipping be at fault? It's pretty serious signs never had a r.i. in any of my snakes before.

Yeah I guess I should of payed closer attention to him. Just didn't want to bother him to much till he got settled in good. Can a R.I. happen that fast with him already open mouth breathing? No noticeable bubbles or anything but gasps for air and holds head up most of the time.

Takes minimal time for the bacteria to manifest into an infection. Could of been a minor case on their end, then the stress brought it out more from shipping. And you not checking in enough allowed it to progress to severe.

The caramel was received by him July 18th. We Were told the snake was looked over and looked great. Got a message sat aug 3rd that now it has a RI. We responded saying it couldn't have had it when he left us and have out number to call us to talk about it. Have not heard anything from him since.
The snake was looked over very well before he was shipped as all our snakes are, NO RI as he bred 2 females so they would be be sick as well and they are not.
This thread was truly uncalled for. We stand by all our animals and have always will.

I don't smell foul play here. Even though it is true that snakes are usually slow to get sick, something can come up rather quickly. If it wasn't noticed when it first arrived it either was brought on by the stress of shipping or it was in it's very early stages when it was sent. You mentioned it was under weight, if it was from breeding, this added in with the stress of shipping could also have been the culprit. In my opinion, this thread is uncalled for, but I am glad to see this as more of an info thread rather than a bad guy thread. Hope everything works out.

Colt, would you mind posting pictures of the symptoms? Will you be taking the animal to the vet? It could be another symptom like broken ribs during shipping or lodged substrate. It might be worth seeking a professional opinion.

Just an FYI ...

Not taking sides but did want to offer info from my vet. Over the years I have had a few cases of RI and according to my vet, it is an opportunist infection and may or may not infect otherwise healthy snakes.

thanks ... doug.

:iagree: Also can you please give some detail about how the animal is housed?

Did not make this a bad guy thread just trying to get some opinions. I'll get some pics later I just have never had a R.I. in any of my snakes. I don't see how this is uncalled for? He is being housed in a 32qt tub with the correct temps and humidity. He has also shed and ate 3 meals since he's been here. Like I said I was just looking in on him very minimal to let the snake get settled in. He was eating so I didn't think much about it. After he did his business I went to clean his tub at first I just thought he was hissing at me but on closer inspection he was just trying to breath. He lays with his head up all the time and is open mouth breathing.

I shipped out what I thought was a perfectly healthy BRB (had been in my care for over 4yrs) and he showed up at the buyer's with the start of an RI. The stress of shipping brought it out.
