In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Signature area graphics

I have decided to enable this feature in the signature area. Don't ask me why, because I don't know. Just felt like doing it. I guess I'm thinking I've been trying to keep this site too spartan looking, mostly because I didn't want the distractions in the BOI. I suppose that is just not important to me any longer, so what the heck.....

If it gets abused (photos too large, inappropriate pics, etc.) then it will go away again.

If you have to think "gee, I wonder if this will be acceptable", then don't do it. Such pics will be removed when noticed. If you see it is gone, don't think something just went wrong and try to put it back in, please.

Of course, only Contributor members and above can use the signature area, so hopefully abuse won't be an issue.

Just a question... why do you have to be a paid member to have a signature??

Because many people use the signature area as an advertising area for their own websites. So yes, the risk does exist that I could lose banner advertisers when they decide they can get more mileage (debatable) by simply paying a membership fee and having every post they make here display their advertising banner instead of paying for the global banner ads through FaunaAds.com.

If the signature area gets overused this way and begins to take a substantial hit on page displays because of the additional server load processing those graphics, this decision may have to be reconsidered.

To give you an example, if there are 5 posts displayed and so happens that each post has a 100 K animated graphic in it, then those graphics will add an additional half meg of file size that the page will now take to display on your browser. To some people, especially those using dial-up, this could be a substantial hit for them.

I'm beginning to already think maybe this isn't such a good idea.... But let's just see what happens....

It's a nice idea, Rich. :)

Maybe set a rule in place that the banner image may only be say...75x400? That's not obnoxiously large, but still provides room for people to put a bit of info.

Graphics in the sig area annoy me. I'm not really sure why, maybe because it takes away from the uniformness of the page. A little OCDness coming out of me I suppose ;-).
I don't know that I would go so far as to say it annoys me...but I know I don't like it, especially the little banners - they look too much like advertising, and I don't like seeing it in the body of a discussion forum. Guess I am off to the User CP to see how much I have to mess up to make them go away.

I'm just not a fan of things that makes a member's post large just because of the items shown on the left side of the screen. More of a hassle to scroll through posts.

Nevermind. I found that under options I can turn off viewing any avatars. Now if we could just make the coins smaller in size... lol.

Get a bigger monitor with higher resolution. On a 21 inch screen at 1600x1200, they don't look big at all.... :D

Seriously, if I had the original photoshop files I could play with them, but the guy who created them for me has been unreachable for ages now.....

I really do need a graphics designer on call.....

speaking of which - were you playing with the settings earlier today? Everything looked normal, I left and returned, and the page didn't fit on my screen anymore. (I changed to a higher resolution and it fit again)

How funny is that, I happened to be around and contributing during that time, I will have to fire up my older computer to see if I still have the coins. I think I may have the silver and gold but not sure about the red.

In fact I have the whole photoshop suite, I can turn on the old imagination for a bit and see if I can come up with some ~ perhaps new.

Cool, I'd like to see the $ go away. I don't like to focus on that part of it.
In order to do that you would need the original psds (or pngs or whatever format the graphics were created in). Very possibly the dollar sign was its own layer that could just not be visible when re-saved as a gif. Without the originals the effort would be a bit greater.

(this was the end of this post, but when I came back to comment further, apparently I reentered that post and deleted my original message in the process of posting the next one. As long as I am in here, I'll just add on)
hmmmph - I can either not view signatures, which means I have to assume that everybody uses their full name on the BOI; or, I can not view images (including attached and IMG files), which detracts from many of the threads I look at & adds time to the process (having to click on all the individual links); OR, I can suck it up for a while and hope they go away.
