    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Silkies as a staple?

Hey guys...I have a beautiful tang from Jason at Capital City Geckos that I got on the weekend. She really loves her silkworms and as I am thinking of breeding her when she is ready (she's only about 4 months old now) I am wondering if it'd be good to let her just eat silkies as a staple?

Also...how often can butterworms be fed? She (and a few other of my leos!) love those too!
 
I don't know about butterworms, however using a single food item isnt a good idea, im not a fan of "staple" diets for lizards, snakes yes, but not lizards. As far as using silikes, I don't think theyre good for more than an occasional treat.
 
Actually, silkworms are an excellent source of protein and can be used as a staple diet for Leopard Geckos, but they tend to be expensive unless you raise your own.
 
My geckos love silkworms! Elizabeth, who had a bacterial infection and stopped eating for quite a while, would only eat silkworms for three months after her antibiotic injections cleared up the infection. She's back to eating everything in sight now! :eatpointe I've also noticed some of my ovulating females can be enticed to eat silkworms when they turn their noses up at other food. They make great hatchling food too! They wave their bodies in a very enticing way, but don't hop or even crawl away as the babies try to get them. I offer silkworms, mealworms, and crickets.

I buy bulk eggs to keep the cost down. Perhaps I should plant a mulberry tree so I don't have to buy chow.

I agree that variety is a good thing - that's how I discovered silkworms in the first place!!
 
Silkworms are indeed very nutritious. I would recommend (as others already have) that variety is good, but most of us have a staple food we feed our leos. Silkworms are fine.
