In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hi all,

I am interested in possibly getting into some small boa constrictor species but I don't know what program to start. I like some color but I would like the animals to stay smallish. Any recommendations I can further research?

Thanks!

I'm in love with the Corn Island boas. <3

There are several out there that stay on the smaller side. I'll leave those recommendations for the boa experts. All I have are CIs.

Most boa constrictor imperators reach between 6-8 feet in length ... if you want something smaller, you may have to go with Gongylophis colubrinus, the Kenyan sand boa.

You're really limited if you want a small and colorful boa constrictor species.

Crawl Cays, Caulker Cays and CanCun Boas are the only boas that are known to typically remain under six feet but are not colorful animals by nature.

Pearl Island Boas are thought to remain under six feet, but it is believed some females may be able to reach it.

Hog Islands staying small is something of a myth and they tend to reach six feet in length with about the same body structure as Colombian Boas. Corn Island Boas, Honduran Boas, La Bahia Boas and El Salvador Boas are also known to reach about the same size.

With that being said, getting a male boa is a better bet in keeping a smaller boa. It's not abnormal for even Colombian males to be barely at five feet even at seven or eight years old. This is not being maintenance fed either, but it is also not a guarantee.

Orange tail hypos tend to stay rather small, especially males. Blood boas are the new rave, they tend to stay smaller as well - both of these options can be very colorful.

The majority of Central american forms can be maintained with conservative
husbandry focused on feeding.
We have several here still under 5 feet and the majority are 05-07Honduran,
Hog Island,Longicauda as well as BC Amarali.
Nearing 10 yrs in our revised protocols are proving out to be very solid with outstanding results based on over all animal health(condition).

Pretty well proving that internet "advice" isn't as definitive as most believe it to be.
What I have caged here in no way follows the popular rigid conscience(s) thats regurgitated on every public reptile forum.

Its not what you have, its how you raise it

well put and I agree with it is how you raise them and feed them goes with the size

The "trick to it" if you will begins from birth or as close to it as you can get
3-4 weekly feedings from birth and then straight to 4-5 week intervals
I still have one pair of 07 Colombian/Central that feed on med rat prey, seldom do you ever see that with 5 yr old anything(snake)
FWIW,none of my animals have ever eaten a mouse

Sonoran Red Tails

I have two Sonoran Boas that are 11 years old, and have topped out at 52". And they can be pretty colorful. I will post pics as soon as I figure out how.

Get a male Colombian and feed him conservatively, he should stay well within the 5' range.
