    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Ok it's been really nice for the last three days and it's been absolutely killing me that I couldn't go looking for snakes because I was working. Well today I was off early so I stopped at home to pick up the camera and went straight to the dens!!

Total count was 7 Rattlesnakes and 1 Bullsnake ;D And I know I probably walked past many more and didn't see them because of the long grass, man these little suckers blend in well here on the prairies. There was one spot where I thought I could see a hole about 20feet from where I was standing but there was a patch of long grass all around it and I just had a feeling that something was there....man was I right!! I very very carefully took a few steps in and then spotted the first one about 4 ft in front and to the right, as soon as it saw me it started rattling. As soon as it started it made another one start going about 3ft to it's left, and then that one set off a 3rd snake another 3ft to it's left. I hadn't even looked at the hole I thought I had seen yet so I worked around those three and sure enough there was a big bastard right at the hole too!!

Awesome day!! Man I love finding these guys. Anyway here are some pics of todays and this years first finds..........

ENJOY ;D

Nice pics. Especially the 5th one. He has that standard Western Diamondback pose that you always see. Makes me anxious to get out in the field.

That hole that you mentioned. Could it be the beginnings of a den? Are the surrounding areas suitable for a den to be located there? Any rock outcroppings? What a great area to go herping in.
BTW the pictures are great.

The whole area is littered with dens actually. Many of the holes don't look like much as you approach them but they actually go down very deep into the ground and can run for quite a distance. Most of the dens got their start as Badger dens as they are usually the only ones deep enough to get below the frost line as winters here can and often do get to -50C.

This was just one spot where dens are found near me, there are at least 3 more I know of that are all within 15 minutes from my house.

Those are some amazing photos, Im trying to get over my fear snakes with a baby ball python, its working well so far.

I think that snakes are one of the most beautiful creatures, if I could just get past my fears one day man the snakes I will want!
