Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Somebody Help Me Sex my Adult Dragon!!!

Aren't they so quirky? I used to love watching them dance around each other. Just wait until you start copying them...bobbing your head at your wife and she arm waves back at you!

Has Sunshine shown any interest, as in bending the front half of her body down to the floor, leaving her butt in the air? Anything like that? And is she still eating?

If she's got eggs in her that aren't fertile, you won't be able to feel them. At least I never could. It's more just kind of going off her behavior. The fertile ones, you can usually feel and can sometimes see...as long as the female isn't super fat.

See? I told you I had my weights all screwed up. LOL! I don't have any of our old breeding records anymore, so I don't have anything to go by, other than what little I read. And you know how that goes...everyone has their own opinion.

They're pretty quirky alright!! Right now they're just hanging out with one another. Every now and then, one will bob their head and the other will answer, but it only lasts for a few seconds....so far, anyway.

I have not noticed her "presenting", as you described, yet. She sort of stood sideways to him, dropping the side that was closest to him, ready to circle around like a gladiator. So far I've noticed no bad/violent aggression from either so I'm happy about that.

I've looked around to see what people like best for "lay-boxes". From what I've seen, it looks like I just need a big Rubbermaid (type) tub with a mixture of soil and sand? I've seen huge differences in both the type of box, and how they were set-up. I just want to make sure that I have a good set-up BEFORE I need it!

Yep, that's exactly what we used. You get a real deep tub, build a hill of wet dirt/sand on one end that she can dig into, and shine a nice heat lamp on it to keep her warm. It may take several times of her being in the bin before she actually does anything, though.

Gah! It sounds like she's acting just like my girl that I told you about, the one that acted all manly but was actually a girl. You're way better at describing it! LOL! Sounds like you're being very well entertained today!

I'll get one at Home Depot tomorrow and be ready, but I think she's got some time. While I understand that you said it's harder to feel unfertilized eggs, wouldn't her stomach still stretch out and try to drag the ground when she "stands" up? She doesn't look fat at all, and I was really surprised to see how close she has gotten to 500 grams!

They're still together, and have sparred throughout the day. I guess because he's still a young guy--not to mention that she's a virgin, too--has a lot to do with them courting this much?? He's probably bobbed at his reflection more times today than he has at her! A few times, he still managed to get her attention like that.

Well, that's part of why I asked you how she's been eating. Usually, when they're gravid, they'll eat like pigs...just can't get enough to eat...and then they just stop. Right around that same time is when they start the incessant digging and frantic behavior.

Yes, she would appear a little bit fatter if she's gravid, no matter whether they're fertile or not. But with the infertiles, it's something that takes a real keen eye to spot. They just don't "show" much at all when the eggs are infertile.

Poor Clyde sounds like he's going to burst with all those hormones.

Oh yeah, forgot to answer your question about her eating. I don't think that she ate more than a few roaches yesterday. And, I don't think that she ate any today. I dropped several in a couple of times today, but I'm pretty sure that Clyde ate all of them (he wasn't AS interested as he normally is, but he still ate).

I guess I should go ahead and get her in the lay-box tomorrow and see how she reacts??

Most definitely will let you know! So basically half and half sand & soil wet, but not enough to squeeze out any water? And about 18" deep on one side? (I've read several different things, but that seems to be the most common that I've come across.)

Exactly. Just like you mix vermiculite, wet enough to clump, not wet enough to drip water out. And make the dirt shallow on one end going deeper to the other. About midway on the hill is where you want to shine the light to keep her warm.

Gotcha!! And once again, thank you so much for so much help!! I really had no idea that she would lay eggs, having never been bred so I didn't think that I needed to worry about this stage for a little longer. Even read (can't remember which forum) where someone asked something about their virgin dragon getting ready to lay eggs, and an older member flamed them hard, saying they must be stupid to think that their virgin dragon could possibly lay eggs.

If she DOES lay eggs soon, how long should I wait to try breeding these guys again?? Even though they are not fertile eggs, I'm guessing that laying them will drain her nearly as much as a fertile clutch would??

You're more than welcome! I think I was told once that a virgin couldn't lay eggs, but went on to experience the exact opposite.

Yes, any egg laying that she does will drain her, fertile or infertile. It's really best to wait until she's back to her old self, nice and plump, before breeding her. She should go right back to eating after she lays, so if make sure you've got plenty of goodies for her, she'll fatten right back up. This would also be the perfect time to give her a very limited amount of "treats", like waxworms or something, just to help her get there.

I hope you're not charging by the post for all this help! I feel guilty asking any more questions at this point, as I've picked your brain A LOT, going on 3 days now. I have read through all kinds of other info that I've come across on the Net, too, but some of it has been scary. I believe some posts were made by persons JUST getting into dragons and knowing even less than me....but making "educational" posts anyway!!

It is still SO strange to me that she can lay multiple clutches so often. Were you able to see ovulations so that you knew when they would lay? I don't always see my snakes ovulate, but I USUALLY know when they go through their post-ov shed. But once my snakes lay, they're done until next year.

BTW--she's not digging at all this morning, but just hanging out. They've only been awake for less than an hour so I haven't tried to feed them yet, but am getting ready to. I'll watch closely to see if she eats.

Haha! Nope, definitely not charging by the post. I do wish I had a better memory for the details, though. It's been quite a while since we bred dragons, and it's strange the stuff that sticks in memory and the stuff that just doesn't. I'm more than happy to share what I can remember, though, so please, pick away. :D

You're finding out exactly what I was talking about...the everyone has their own opinion thing. If I could offer any advice with regards to beardies, it's do what you're comfortable with. If one thing isn't working, don't be afraid to try something different...including something that others haven't tried.

I never once witnessed an ovulation in a beardie. It's all just behavior based, especially when you're talking about infertile eggs. I work from home, so it was always easy for me to observe them all the time and notice every tiny little change they went through. They're definitely a bit more "mysterious" than our ball pythons are! And it seems like nothing is ever on schedule, nothing like it is with snakes with the ovulation, post ovulation shed, eggs so many days later... Well, at least it never was with ours.

And generally speaking, once she does start laying, yes, you can expect her to lay several times after that, as well. You'll be amazed at the number of eggs this tiny little lizard can lay...and how close together they come AND all from one breeding.

Just keep an eye on her, watch how she's eating, and most of all, pay attention to her behavior. Just like you can read your snakes, you'll be able to read her. Once she starts that frantic stuff, you know exactly what to do.

Well, my boy just figured it out a few minutes ago!! :D He's been at the very top of the basking log, bobbing like a mad man. If he had fists, I have no doubts that he would've been pounding his chest. She never returned the bob, but he finally just got tired of waiting for any sign from her, leapt from his perch and well...got the job done!!

I guess I'm going to stick to my plan of keeping my old fridge for my new incubator This way I can have BP eggs in the fridge and dragon eggs in the freezer!!!

 Love the description! WAY TO GO, CLYDE!!! Er...wait, is that Tarzan?

Um, you might want to rethink that incubator plan. You'll need the fridge part for what Sunshine produces! Better get started on that lay bin...and then baby bins! Yay!!!

LOL....it's got a pretty big freezer. ;) Good thing cause she just bobbed at him for the first time today, ran over to him and yelled, "AGAIN!" and well....again!! lmao!! That little perv is still bobbin' at her, but she's retreated back to the basking log for more R&R!

How long should I leave them together?? Their breeding habits seem to be a lot more energy draining than any of my snakes! I don't anyone getting too stressed. Did you only introduce yours for a couple of days at a time? Or is it ok to leave them together for a week or so??

i am just now starting to get my beardeds ready for breeding but if you end up with babies and have on that wont sell i will definately take it perferably a female hypo

My goodness! It certainly didn't take him long to figure out what to do! LOL! With these guys, once is all it takes, so you can separate them whenever you want. I so wish the snakes were that way!

sorry i just realized that it was clyde and sunshine not clyde and bonnie i would still be interested in a babie between clyde and sunshine

He figured IT out alright!! And took advantage of...ummmm...how shall I put this?? ...mirrored equipment

I realize once is all it CAN take, but is it that safe of a bet that she'll be gravid from these 2 encounters? Or will it hurt for me to leave them together longer?? I wold love for her to become gravid, but it's much more important to me to NOT stress either of them more than needed. I can always reintroduce later, if needed.

I'm just so used to seeing a pair of snakes lock-up for weeks, and when she lays her eggs MONTHS later, the offspring were sired by a later-introduced male!!! This is starting to sound TOO easy. Good thing I decided to breed more roaches than these guys (talkin' the adults here) can eat!! :D

sorry i just realized that it was clyde and sunshine not clyde and bonnie i would still be interested in a babie between clyde and sunshine

No, these babies are only going to be 50% possible het hypo. I think they'll still be some very pretty babies. Sunshine, orange phase female, was never purchased with intent to breed. I bought her in '09 as a baby for $60 and NEVER expected her to get the color that she now has. She was actually for my son, but his mother refused to let him bring "a lizard" into her home!! So she became my responsibility.

Bonnie and Clyde were acquired for breeding, after I realized how much I enjoyed Sunshine! Bonnie, an orange hypo female, came from Dave Freeman of CarolinaClassicDragons last summer. Clyde, rainbow tiger het hypo male, was purchased about the same time from Tammy of DragginTails. They were within (single-digit) grams until after Thanksgiving. He started outgrowing her before Christmas, and exploded in size over the past 5-6 weeks.

Whatever the babies look like, I CAN'T WAIT to see them!!!! I'm hoping for at least one or two with lots of yellow and big blue bars!! I love yellow citrus tigers!! ....upon further consideration of the baby's looks, I hope they're all BUTT-UGLY!!! How else am I gonna bring myself to let them go???
