South African Leopard Tortoises
There is no question how this species acquired it’s name, just look at those spots! Found in a variety of habitats across South Africa, including savannah, thorn scrub, and grassland, the South African locality of leopard tortoise is hardy, adaptable and easily kept in captivity. This locality is well know as the larger variety available in the US, growing to lengths of 24 inches and weighing over 50 pounds. Their bold and outgoing personalities makes them a fun and interactive choice for keeping that won’t destroy your landscaping. Males of this species can be aggressive toward one another and care should be taken to give them plenty of space with visual barrier in their habitat if housed together. While young we recommend keeping them in a closed chamber indoors until they reach six inches in length. Once large enough to go outdoors they will need to be secured from predators and have a warm house to retreat in at night. More care specifics will be provided at the time of purchase if needed. We can safely ship across the United States with specialized insulted shippers and appropriate temperature control packs. Local pick up from a Fed Ex Shipping Center is the safest option for arrival with the decrease in Fed Ex staff and lack of temperature controlled delivery trucks. All shipments will be weather permitting with Tuesdays as the most common shipping day. We have a live arrival guarantee; and it is our mission to make sure your tortoise spends the least amount of time in transit and arrives healthy.
OUR PROMISE
We have carefully selected our breeding groups to insure high quality healthy hatchlings. Once pipped hatchlings are kept at specific temperature and humidity parameters, to encourage smooth and healthy shell growth, while fed an appropriate varied diet. Before going to their new homes hatchlings are raised to triple their hatch weight so we know they are growing correctly and thriving.
