In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

In another thread, this topic was brought up and I need to make a comment here for anyone who feels it may apply to them:

It is obvious to me that some otherwise non participating members here are using the karma system as a stealth method of dissention in the manner in which they assess those points. This will stop NOW. Any more occurrences of this and I will simply put their karma points into the red in order to end their abuses after deleting their entries in the log. If you otherwise continue to find ways to try to pluck at my nerves, you WILL be removed from this site. I made certain to have a warning level in the new system to fine and suspend someone simply because I have sufficient cause to not want you here. The super mods have this tool at their disposal as well to use as they see fit.

I don't know much about "stealth method of dissention" in regards to karma points... my question is how do I get them at all??? And does it have something to do with trader ratings or are they separate? Sad to say I've been a member for almost 2 yrs and have to ask this. Sorry, but thanks in advance for your answer.

You receive Karma points from other members. You receive them for making good posts, or in some instances bad posts. Seeing as you have only made 8 posts it limits your amount of exposure and there is a lesser chance of someone seeing, agreeing, or disagreeing with your posts.

You give them by clicking on the symbol that looks like a scale under the person's name on the left of their post.

Rich, I sympathize with all the crap you have to put up with in running this site. However, this new condition is confusing to me. Is this going to be only for posts you find offensive? Or offensive derrogatory to other members? How is someone going to know when they can and cannot award karma points?

I believe he was referring to those who don't participate regularly but are giving or taking Karma points.

Example: say I was to start a thread saying Rich was out of line giving a friend of mine warning points. Then otherwise nonparticipating members start giving me positive Karma points, it's that type of thing I believe he is attempting to curb.

I am afraid you are just going to have to trust my judgement on this one. It won't just be a single instance, it will be a pattern of abuse.

What a pain in the arse...

First, certain people were so juvenile with building their buddies' karma and tearing down others' karma that the system had to have defaults built into it to prevent abuse. The result was that you could only give so much in a specific time period, and you couldn't repeatedly give it to the same people. Apparently, some geniuses have now found ways to get around those restrictions, and new rules have to apply to prevent karma system abuse.

I'm amazed at the lengths people will go to build up a meaningless number. Is your self esteem really that low? Do you sleep better at night knowing that you have XXX amount of little green bars show up under your name? Do those people you dislike really make you feel so insecure that you have to concoct a plan to get their karma points down?

Pathetic.

Rich, save yourself some energy and aggravation and delete that particular little perk.

At this point, I am more inclined to remove the people who are the main abusers. I think this site will be MUCH better off without them.

I would agree. Just with the few that are now gone, it seems that the atmosphere is better. I would also say IMO, the forums are getting more activity. Before, all of the focus was on the latest drama. this is just my honest opinion. :)

Another Karma question

Is there a way for us to check what karma we have given?

Not that I am aware of. I can check the log in the admin section, but as far as I know, members cannot see what karma points they have given to someone else.

I like the Karma points~ but I think I interpret it different than most people. I don't give out many points~ and when I do~ it's because I thought something was really good. I've even given positive Karma to people who were actively disagreeing with me in a heated discussion~ IF the point they made was a really good one. One guy was so surprised he PMed me to see if it was an accident! LOL~ It wasn't~ he'd made a really good post ~ nailing me with my own arrogance!

Karma points

Hello
How do you build Karma Points?
Due to a lack of judgement on my part and ignorance in the ways of this forum,i was able to go to red.I realized that i was in the wrong and subsequently apologized for my remarks. These remarks i believe were not of the same nature that i see being written on another post that is running hard.
So ...why were my smart aleck comments placed in the same regards .
This is just a question...not trying to start trouble...would like to understand just how it works.
Thank you.

They probably weren't placed in the same regards. Simply, it's a matter of personal opinion. If your comments strike a cord with someone (positive or negative) you are likely to get corresponding karma points. It's completely subjective to the reader.

Don't sweat it. Everyone takes positive and negative hits.

On my forum (fish related) I just ban people, I don't mess with nonsense like that. Glad to see you're finally seeing the light and taking out the trash.

I am so in awe of this response, I would give this lady good karma, if I knew how.

I do not see any scales under names of the left, I do not even understand how I have the points I do,..... when I look at the page that list them all given I see some have little green squares and some have little blue ones. I know one person would NOT give me any good karma and that has a blue square next to it, so does that mean negative?

Most have green squares, but a few with positive comments also have blue squares. Is there somewhere I am missing that this is all explained and how do I give them to others.

At one time it was like 1500, then it dropped down, but not one added anything to change it..........Or is mine not working right?

I just want to understand the process

Cheri,

The scale is the icon next to the green circle at the bottom left hand side of every post. if you want to give someone Karma points you must click on that icon from the post in which you wish to give the points for.

The "blue" ones are from people who didn't have the ability to give you points (there is a post requirement of 100 before you can give or take points) for your post.

Red is negative and green is positive and blue (actually I think it is gray) is an attempt by someone who doesn't either have enough posts or they have negative Karma (they would have red squares as opposed to the green ones you and I have).

Hope that has answered your questions.

You are welcome Cheri. Glad to be of help.

As for the numbers being lower now, Rich had made changes quite a while back and zeroed everybody out.
