In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

State of the onion report.

registered member will be able to post in the regular forums stilland only view the BOI and special forums... so a plain ol register user whom becomes a customer of your and you have done an excellent transaction will have to pau ten dollars to say
" i got a killer animals from joe blow... it had a health certificate was shipped fast prompt and very professional and joe blow was a sheer pleasure to deal with" i bet you dont see too many of these
but i bet you will continue to see the "joe blow" bad guy posts

That is fine by me. I originally envisioned the BOI as a place to post EXCEPTIONAL circumstances. Exceptionally good deals as well as bad deals (which I would HOPE are the exception rather then the rule). If the world were to become all peachy with no problems at all, then there would be nothing posted on the BOI and no reason to have it. But I don't think I will see that day come around, do you?

i wonder if good guy post could be free and just charge for the bad guys crap i dont know... i am tired already

That would be incredibly impractical to implement. Someone would have to manually scan every post on the BOI before it would be released for public viewing. Otherwise how would you know it was going to be a good buy post beforehand? I'm certainly not going to do that, and no way in hell I would ask my moderators to take on that job. I would probably have to pay someone, so then we come around full circle to needing the funds to pay for it. So if the management of those good guy posts required money in order to pay for the labor, where will that come from?

yeah and if posting "good guy" posts was something that was free, that would be a great loophole for the REALLY bad guys to sneak in, post something nice about themselves, without any sort of member verification (the fee)....

Sort of circumvents the process.

I think the idea is that if a person doesn't have a bad guy post, then you are hopefully safe in doing business with them. They don't have to have a "good guy" post just for you to feel you can do business with them. Since "good-guy-ism" is hopefully a more prevalent state of affairs than "bad-guy-ism", you don't need to be alerted to it.

Update - 02/23/05

So far, from what I can see, basic traffic levels to this site have not been dramatically altered. I really thought it would have tapered off abruptly and then a slow rebuilding process would have happened. Actually, overall activity has been basically unchanged, rather then down, as far as raw visits are concerned.

Although there is less posting of messages and new threads, as I had expected, it does seem like there is more posting taking place within the other free forums then what normally takes place. Both posts and new thread starts are down, but I believe that most of what we are now no longer seeing of them were of the type that we could do without any way here. I had hoped that the tradeoff was going to be for more quality postings and a reduction of the more frivolous posting that has been taking place particularly within the BOI.

Paid membership numbers have been gratifying, which is pretty evident from anyone looking at the display of members online within the past 24 hours. I am now feeling pretty confident about having the resources necessary to accomodate future server and programming needs to keep this site running as best as possible.

Of course this is still pretty early in the game and I fully expect the real results are still to be seen. But overall, I don't think this is going to be the doom and gloom scenario painted by some people during the discussion of implementing this change. My suspicion was that it would only affect a small subset of the membership here that we could very well do without their posting within the BOI anyway. Most people coming to this site everyday are more "watchers" then "posters", so to them, there has not been much of a change at all. Of course, I do expect a gradual tapering off of people just coming here to watch the drama and bickering caused by some of the drama-maker posters, but I do believe their gradual leaving will be of no real consequence to the overall usefullness and eventual stronger growth of this site anyway. Neither the posting of such crap, nor the people coming here solely to read it and using up the resources here, were contributing much to the solid core of what the BOI really needs to be doing. So it was time to trim off that dead wood anyway.

The BOI Good Guy Certification program has started off a whole lot stronger then I had thought it would. We have around 44 members taking part in that program at this moment. I suspect as more people see that certificate on people's sites and come to recogize what it means, it will begin to snowball significantly. With any luck, this will prove to be a major positive step in this industry. Kind of a "catch the bad guys coming and going" sort of approach.

Night before last I spent some time doing some server optimizations that appear to have greated reduced the loading factor on the server, and gotten a bit more snappiness from the response of pages loading. So the server does seem to be on more solid footing then it was directly after the move took place a couple of weeks back. Even the chat system seems to be running pretty solidly lately.

And I feel a lot more relaxed. The die is cast. Whatever will be, will be. Things don't look too bad right now, and much of the workload needed to patrol the BOI has been lifted.

To all of you that have decided that this site IS worth paying for to keep around, I give you my deepest thanks and appreciation. Although I am very serious about saying I would walk away from this, if that is what you all told me to do by your responses, it is gratifying to know that this all apparently has not been years of wasted effort on my part and is worth something to you all.

THANK YOU!

Well Rich like I said in my e-mail I do not blaim you . You will always have my support . You have a much needed service here and better then the other guy down south .

Kevin

Rich,

Dand pretty much covered what I wanted to say other than it looks like you arefeeling a little more optimistic about things. It is nice to see.

I actually started this post in another thread concerning some site bashing going on over on ReptiRank against this site. Rather comical reading, if you are so inclined to read anonymous postings like that. I think we all have pretty good suspicions on the people behind it, but I don't see any reason to take part in that sort of activity. Trolls just WANT you to get involved with THEM to make themselves seem important. Few things are more comical then to see two or more like minded trolls in a positive feedback situation, working themselves up into a frenzy of unreality. But the best defense for rational people is to just laugh at their antics and let them feed upon themselves. I'm sure they all have a home to go back to at the end of the day, and the worst punishment I can think of for them is they have only themselves who will take them seriously. I guess they are so upset with this site because my plan of using a paid membership has cut them off at the knees and they no longer have free reign here with their fake registrations. But obviously they have other homes to go to now.

Along those same lines, apparently another message board system has taken it upon themselves to try to use the issue of the payment plans here as a stepping stone for their own future. Word is that they are actively recruiting members from this site to come to theirs. Well, more power to them. I really don't care either way. It's not like people can't come and go here as they please, so they can knock themselves out in that effort. If someone believes that another site is a better place to call home, then so be it. I really don't have a problem with that at all.

From the response I have gotten to the paid memberships, it appears we are going to be here for a very long time, but people are going to come and go all of the time. Nearly every day I get emails from people who haven't been by here for a year or more wanting me to help them figure out their logon and password. So yeah, people will leave for one reason or another, but they will probably be back, sooner or later.

We are STILL growing! New registrations are averaging between 20 and 30 PER DAY here. So yeah, maybe we did drop some chaff after the change, but I think the wheat that remains is what is of real value here. More will be undoubtedly coming every day to fill in those gaps, so really there was no appreciable loss to new people coming aboard that I can see. Postings have been slightly lower, but I expected it to be worse. I think many of the postings that would be categorized in the "drivel" realm have been sharply curtailed here. So no big loss, in my opinion, except to those people who may have been coming to this site solely to get their jollies reading such stuff. So yes, I expect those people have gone off to more fertile feeding grounds as well, but I don't consider that as any real loss to this site and it's projected continuing growth.

As for those people who have left here in a huff, no, I am not of the mind that you are either with us or against us. If you find that you no longer need what this site has to offer, then that is fine, no hard feelings. I admit I am disappointed you would take it that way, but that is what freedom of choice is all about. But don't do it thinking you will hurt this site in the process. You are then leaving for the wrong reasons. We are just HERE, and are going to REMAIN here. It is completely up to you to decide about being here or not. If you don't have a need nor desire for what this site has to offer you, then thanks for stopping by and good luck with your pursuits. But please, don't stand there blocking the door so other people can't come in.

I signed up a couple of years ago when I bought my first computer. I got some points, and then got too busy at work, and took a good part of a year off from here.

I found myself missing Fauna Classifieds, because I thought about it, and darn it, Fauna is a pretty great place after all. So, I decided to take the plunge and go full out, because Fauna is now my reptile club. I have no time to attend any meetings and work for a reptile club.

So here I am. I assume that a number of folks will also change their minds and plunk down the money after some time the same way.

Just wanted to make a general comment refuting what some of the naysayers were predicting about the BOI after this paid membership program went into effect. They predicted that NO ONE would pay a $10 membership fee in order to post good guy posts. That instead it would only be the bad guy posters (if even them) that would pay in order to be able to post on the BOI.

Well, facts aren't bearing witness to the accuracy of that prediction. In fact, the exact opposite seems to be happening. Except for a couple of notable exceptions, MOST of the posts appear to be in reference to GOOD GUY posts, and not BAD GUY posts.

Traffic appears to have leveled off and is climbing back up again. There is less posting gone on, but it appears to be mostly of the frivolous nature that are gone from this site. New registrations are still ranging from 23 to 36 new members PER DAY.

Guess I won't be going to the beach as much as I thought I would this year....
